Make an independent copy of anything you want to keep while the game, console, and capture tools still work. Start by identifying what you’re saving: screenshots and video captures, temporary recordings, replay files, save data, mods or custom content, and the game installation are separate kinds of files. A platform’s cloud sync or a game backup may cover only some of them.
“Closing” can mean an app is about to exit, a game is being delisted, online services are shutting down, or a platform is removing hosted captures. The safest approach is the same: save temporary footage, export what you can, copy relevant local files to storage outside the game service, and open the copies to confirm they work.

What should you back up?
Make an inventory before copying files. A recording that is still in a rolling buffer needs different treatment from an exported MP4, and neither is necessarily included with a save-data backup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Screenshots and video captures: images and videos made by the console or platform capture tools.
- Temporary recordings: rolling background footage that may be overwritten as storage fills.
- Saved clips or replay files: clips saved in a capture tool or replay data created by a game. Some replays are only playable inside that game, so export them to video if the game offers that option.
- Save data: progress, settings, or other user data; cloud coverage depends on the game and platform.
- Custom content: mods, maps, configuration files, and other files added or changed by the player.
- Installation files: the game’s program files, which are not a substitute for saves, captures, or custom content.
A reliable backup workflow
- List what matters. Record which categories you need to preserve and where you expect them to be stored. Note whether any item exists only on a platform account or game server.
- Turn temporary footage into a saved clip. If the capture tool uses a rolling buffer, save the moment before more recording can overwrite it. Export to a standard video file when available.
- Copy files to a destination outside the game service. Use an external drive or a cloud account you control. A service that may be closing is not the only place to keep the archive.
- Find saves and custom files separately. Check the game developer’s instructions for the locations and platform-specific details. Do not assume a game installation backup contains them.
- Verify the copy. Open the file from the destination, check that video plays with useful picture and audio, and compare the copied file count with your inventory. Keep another copy of especially valuable material.
For a large archive, an external drive can provide a local copy; a cloud account can provide another copy away from the device. Check the console’s transfer support, the file format, available capacity, and your internet connection before choosing a destination. No single method covers every platform or file type.

Back up captures on Xbox
Xbox Wire announced on September 27, 2023 that captures stored on the Xbox network would be deleted after 90 days. The announcement recommended backing up wanted screenshots and clips to OneDrive or external storage. Because that is a dated policy announcement, check the current status and options in the console’s Captures app rather than treating the retention period as a guarantee for every region, account, or later date. Xbox Wire’s announcement gives this console route: Xbox button > My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures.
From Captures, manage or bulk-upload captures, and review the option to back up future captures automatically to OneDrive. A hosted copy on the Xbox network is not an independent archive. For anything irreplaceable, keep a separate copy and verify that it opens from its destination.

Save Steam screenshots and recordings
Screenshots
F12 is Steam’s default screenshot hotkey when the Steam Overlay is available. Steam says the Screenshot Uploader opens after you quit a game in which you took screenshots; you can also open it with View > Screenshots or from the overlay. Treat the uploader as a way to manage screenshots, not as proof that you have an independent long-term backup. Copy the image files to storage you control. Steam’s screenshot instructions explain the uploader.

Background recordings and saved clips
Steam Game Recording has background and on-demand modes. Background footage is temporary: Steam says it is overwritten as the allocated disk space fills. Use the timeline’s clip controls to save a moment you want to keep. Steam says saved clips remain on the PC, and an edited clip can be exported as an MP4. Check the recording settings for the save location and maximum space, then copy exported files somewhere independent of the game installation. The distinction matters: a rolling recording can disappear through overwrite, while a saved or exported clip is a file you can archive. Steam’s Game Recording page describes the modes and export options.

Keep Steam saves and custom files separate from game backups
Steam Cloud syncs only the user files a game’s developer has configured for it. Check the game’s Steam store page for its cloud indicator and confirm which files are covered; do not assume it includes every save, screenshot, replay, or other game-related file. Steam notes that files may remain local if a game does not sync or a sync fails, and it may not be able to recover lost data. Steam Cloud guidance explains the service and its limits.
Steam’s Backup Feature is for game files, not a complete archive of a player’s data. Valve says games that use third-party installers or downloaders may not work with the feature. For Valve’s own games, its instructions say backups omit saved games, custom maps, and configuration files, which need separate copies. For other games, file locations vary by developer. Find the title’s specific save and custom-content locations, then copy the files you need in addition to any installation backup. Valve’s backup instructions cover the feature and the additional folders its own games may require.

Preserve PlayStation 5 captures
Sony’s current capture guide says PS5 can take screenshots, record up to one hour, or save recent gameplay from the last 15 seconds up to one hour. Some content is blocked from capture, and screenshot and video format and resolution settings affect the result. These capabilities do not establish a universal long-term export method. Use the current Media Gallery sharing or export options to move wanted files off the console, then open the copies on the destination device. PlayStation Support’s capture guide lists the capture controls and limits.
Understand Nintendo Switch cloud-save limits
Nintendo Switch Save Data Cloud is for save data in compatible games; it is not a general archive for screenshots or replays. Nintendo Switch Online is required, and compatibility is game-specific. Check the game’s eShop or product details or its software cloud menu before relying on it. Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud guidance explains eligibility.

Nintendo’s missing-backup guidance says cloud backups become inaccessible when a membership expires. If the user resubscribes within 180 days, access returns, according to that guidance. That is a condition for regaining access to cloud saves, not a reason to treat them as a permanent capture archive. Copy screenshots and videos separately using the console’s available transfer options, and verify the copies. Nintendo’s missing-backup guidance covers the membership condition.
Quick Recap
How to verify an archive
- Open copied images and videos from the destination, not just the original device.
- For video, check the beginning and end, picture quality, and audio where applicable.
- Confirm the expected number of files and that the files have plausible sizes rather than being empty or partial.
- For replay data, confirm the game and version needed to play it; export to video if you want a file that can be watched without launching the game.
- For saves and custom content, preserve the folder structure if the developer’s instructions require it, and keep an additional copy for high-value files.
