Epic documents ways to secure and recover your Epic Games account, and ways to keep Fortnite progress available on linked devices. It does not document a settings-export file or confirm that Fortnite gameplay settings are included in Epic Games Launcher Cloud Saves. Protect your account first, link the correct platform accounts, save your recovery codes, and make a private record of the settings you would otherwise have to recreate.
What “backing up Fortnite” actually covers
When players say they want to back up Fortnite, they usually mean one or both of these goals:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Protect account access: preserve the ability to sign in if you lose a phone, change devices, forget a password, or lose access to an authenticator.
- Preserve game data: keep Fortnite progress and, ideally, gameplay preferences when moving between a console, PC, or another device.
These are related but not interchangeable. Epic’s account-security guidance covers passwords, email security, two-factor authentication (2FA), and recovery codes. Its cross-device guidance covers linking platform accounts to one active Epic Games account. The reviewed Epic documentation does not establish that individual Fortnite settings—such as control, sensitivity, graphics, or accessibility choices—are exported, restored, or synchronized by a supported backup feature.

That means there is no officially documented “export Fortnite settings” procedure to follow here. Until Epic publishes platform-specific instructions, treat your settings as a manual recreation task and your account credentials and recovery methods as the data that must be formally protected.

1. Confirm which Epic account Fortnite is using
Do this before changing 2FA, unlinking anything, or trying to synchronize a new device. Epic notes that 2FA can appear inactive in Fortnite when it was enabled on a different Epic account from the one currently used to play. Console players may also need to finish setting up an Epic account with an email address before enabling 2FA. See Epic’s explanation of this situation in I enabled Two-factor authentication (2FA) but in Fortnite shows it is not active.
- Identify the Epic account currently associated with your Fortnite progress and your platform account.
- Check that the email address on that Epic account is one you can access for the long term.
- Make sure you are not signed into a second Epic account in another browser, launcher session, or console profile before editing security settings.
- Record which platform accounts are linked. This inventory helps you avoid securing or unlinking an account that does not contain the progress you intend to keep.
If the account was created indirectly through a console sign-in, complete Epic’s account setup with an email address before relying on that account for recovery. A working email is important because email verification is one of Epic’s documented recovery paths.
2. Secure the Epic account and its email
Epic’s account-security guidance recommends a unique Epic password and suggests considering a password manager to generate and store strong, unique passwords. Do not reuse the Epic password on your email, console account, or social accounts.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Use a password that is unique to Epic and difficult to guess.
- Keep the associated email address active for the long term; avoid using an address you may lose through school, work, or a temporary provider.
- Verify the email address on the Epic account.
- Protect the email account itself with a unique password and 2FA.
- Enable 2FA on linked platform or social accounts as well. Epic says those accounts may be used to access the Epic account.
A password manager is an optional way to generate and store credentials; Epic does not require a particular provider. If you keep a written emergency record, do not put the Epic password or recovery codes where other people can easily photograph or copy them, and do not treat that record as a settings backup.
3. Choose and configure a 2FA method
Epic lists four available 2FA routes in What two-factor authentication (2FA) methods are available to use with my Epic Games account?: Epic Authenticator, a third-party authenticator app, email codes, and SMS codes. Epic states that using an authenticator app provides the strongest protection. Some regional phone numbers may not support SMS, so SMS should not be your only recovery assumption.
| Method | How you receive the approval or code | Important access concern |
|---|---|---|
| Epic Authenticator | Through Epic’s authenticator experience | You need access to the device or account used by the authenticator; save the provided backup codes. |
| Third-party authenticator app | In an authenticator app on your phone or another enrolled device | Loss of the enrolled device makes backup codes or another recovery method essential. |
| Email authentication | A code sent to the verified Epic account email | It depends on continued access to that email account and its own security. |
| SMS authentication | A text message sent to the enrolled phone number | Epic warns that some regional numbers do not support SMS; phone access can also be interrupted. |
For a resilient setup, select the strongest method available to you and confirm that you can reach at least one independent recovery route. Enabling 2FA on an account you cannot correctly identify will not protect the Fortnite account you actually use, so verify the Epic account first.

4. Save your authenticator backup codes
When you enable authenticator-app 2FA, Epic provides backup codes. If the authenticator or phone is unavailable, Epic’s recovery flow is documented in My Authenticator app or SMS two-factor authentication (2FA) has locked me out of my account.
- At the sign-in challenge, choose Try another way.
- Select the option to use a backup code.
- Enter one of the supplied eight-digit codes.
- After regaining access, review your 2FA setup and generate or secure replacement recovery information if Epic presents that option.
Store the codes privately and somewhere you can reach when the primary phone is missing or broken. You can use encrypted digital storage or another private method that you control; Epic’s page documents the codes but does not prescribe a notebook, storage product, or physical format. Treat every unused code as a credential. Do not publish it in screenshots, send it in chat, or include it in a support post.
Email verification is another recovery route described by Epic. It only works if you can still sign in to the verified email account, which is why protecting that mailbox is part of backing up account access.
5. Keep Fortnite progress synchronized across devices
Settings and progression are separate. Epic says in How do I get my Fortnite, Fall Guys, or Rocket League progress to sync across all of my devices? that each platform account must be linked to an active Epic Games account for progress to sync across devices.
Link the account that owns the progress
- Use the same active Epic account on each device.
- Link each platform account you intend to play on to that Epic account.
- Remember that Epic documents one linked account of each platform type at a time.
If you see different progress on different platform accounts, identify which platform has the progress you want to keep before following Epic’s platform-specific linking instructions. Epic’s documented process does not merge divergent progress into one combined history; you must choose which platform’s progress to retain.

Unlinking or switching accounts to solve a synchronization problem can leave you looking at an account with different progress. First write down the Epic account identity, the platform account involved, and which device shows the desired progress. Only then make changes through Epic’s account and platform-linking flow.

6. Understand what Epic Games Launcher Cloud Saves do—and do not confirm
On PC, Epic’s documented toggle is located at:
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Click the Settings icon.
- Open Settings.
- Select Enable Cloud Saves.
The full procedure appears in Enable Cloud Saves in the Epic Games Launcher. Epic warns: “If you play games on more than one machine, disabling and enabling Cloud Save may result in Cloud Save conflicts.” Avoid repeatedly switching the feature while a game is being used on multiple machines, and pay attention to any conflict prompt rather than choosing a version blindly.
Crucially, that support page does not say that Fortnite gameplay settings are included in Launcher Cloud Saves. It also does not provide a Fortnite settings export or import procedure. Enabling the toggle is therefore not a guarantee that your sensitivity, keybinds, graphics choices, or accessibility preferences will reappear on a new device.
7. Make a private, manual record of settings
Because an official settings backup procedure is not established, create a reference you can use to rebuild your setup. This is a practical record, not a file that Fortnite or Epic promises to import.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Fortnite’s settings on the device where your setup is correct.
- Capture screenshots of each relevant settings page, or write down the values in a private document.
- Include control bindings, mouse or stick sensitivity, display and graphics choices, audio levels, accessibility options, and any other preference you would notice immediately after moving devices.
- Label the record with the platform, input device, display resolution or mode where relevant, and the date. These details help you distinguish records made for different hardware.
- Store the record separately from your Epic password and 2FA backup codes, using a private location you can access when setting up the new device.
Do not assume that a local configuration-file path copied from one platform will work on another. The official guidance covered here does not establish universal file locations, compatibility, or support for manually transferring configuration files.
8. Moving to a new device: a safe order of operations
- Secure access first. Confirm the Epic email, unique password, 2FA method, and backup codes before signing out of the old device.
- Confirm account identity. Make sure the new device will use the Epic account that owns the Fortnite progress you want.
- Link the platform account. Follow Epic’s cross-device process and keep within the one-account-per-platform-type limitation.
- Install and sign in. After the correct account is connected, check that the expected Fortnite progress appears.
- Enable Launcher Cloud Saves on PC if you use the Launcher. Treat this as a supported launcher setting, not proof that Fortnite preferences are backed up.
- Recreate gameplay settings. Use your screenshots or written record to restore the values manually and verify them in a low-stakes session before relying on them.
9. Troubleshoot the common backup and recovery problems
2FA says it is inactive inside Fortnite
The most likely documented explanation is that 2FA was enabled on a different Epic account. Sign out, identify the account connected to the platform and Fortnite progress, and check 2FA on that account. Epic’s guidance is at I enabled Two-factor authentication (2FA) but in Fortnite shows it is not active.
You lost your phone or authenticator
Choose Try another way at the sign-in challenge and use an eight-digit backup code. If you cannot use that route, try email verification as described by Epic. Once inside the account, secure the replacement recovery method before removing access to the old device.

SMS codes never arrive
Epic says some regional phone numbers do not support SMS 2FA. Use Epic Authenticator, another authenticator app, or email if those methods are available to your account, and keep the associated recovery information accessible.
The new device shows the wrong progress
Check which Epic account is signed in and which platform account is linked. If two platform accounts contain different progress, Epic’s documented process requires choosing which progress to keep; it does not combine them.
A Cloud Save conflict appears
Epic warns that changing Cloud Save state while playing on more than one machine can create conflicts. Stop switching the feature on and off, identify which machine has the version you intend to retain, and follow the launcher’s conflict choices carefully. Do not assume the prompt represents Fortnite settings, because Epic’s page does not confirm that those settings are part of the cloud data.
10. Run a pre-move backup audit
A short audit helps separate credentials, account links, progression and preferences before you erase, sell or reset the old device.
- Test sign-in while the old device still works. Confirm the Epic email and password, then check that your selected 2FA method delivers a code or approval.
- Check the recovery route. Locate the eight-digit backup codes without posting or sharing them. If the codes are unavailable, resolve that while you still have account access.
- List every platform account. Write the platform type and the Epic account it is linked to. Do not rely on a console profile name alone.
- Verify progress. Launch Fortnite on the device that has the desired progression and note the account shown there.
- Capture settings in groups. Take readable screenshots for controls, sensitivity, graphics, audio and accessibility. Include pages that are easy to overlook, such as controller dead-zone or interface preferences, if they matter to your play.
- Keep records private. Settings screenshots can reveal usernames or other account details. Store them where other people cannot access them, and keep them separate from authentication codes.
This audit is especially useful when a household has several console profiles or when a PC launcher has remembered more than one Epic sign-in. The objective is to identify the account that owns the progression before any unlinking or reset occurs.
11. Know what can and cannot be transferred
| Item | What Epic documents | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Epic account access | Unique password, verified email, 2FA and recovery methods | Secure each item and keep backup codes available. |
| Fortnite progression | Sync through platform accounts linked to one active Epic account | Use the same Epic account and choose which progress to retain if accounts differ. |
| Gameplay settings | No universal export/import process is described | Record values manually and recreate them on the destination device. |
| Epic Games Launcher Cloud Saves | A launcher setting with a warning about conflicts on multiple machines | Enable it on PC if appropriate, but do not treat it as proof that Fortnite settings are included. |
This distinction prevents a common mistake: seeing progress, purchases or account identity appear on a new device and assuming every local preference has also transferred. Progress synchronization and settings synchronization are different claims.

- Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone
- Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
12. Avoid common backup mistakes
- Securing the wrong Epic account: enabling 2FA on an account that is not linked to the active Fortnite profile does not protect the intended progress.
- Using an unreachable email: an old school, work or temporary address can make email recovery impossible later.
- Relying only on SMS: Epic notes that some regional numbers are unsupported, and a lost or changed phone can interrupt delivery.
- Leaving backup codes in a public screenshot: an eight-digit code is a recovery credential, not ordinary notes.
- Unlinking to experiment: divergent platform progress is not merged by the documented process, so identify the account to keep first.
- Assuming Cloud Saves cover settings: Epic’s Cloud Save page does not make that promise.
- Copying an unverified configuration file: the official pages do not establish universal paths or cross-platform compatibility.
- Deleting the old setup too soon: keep the old device or screenshots available until you have signed in, confirmed progression and rebuilt the important preferences.
A compact Fortnite backup checklist
- Correct Epic account identified and associated with the intended Fortnite progress.
- Unique Epic password stored securely.
- Long-term email verified, with its own unique password and 2FA.
- 2FA enabled on the Epic account and, where applicable, linked platform or social accounts.
- Authenticator backup codes saved privately; each code treated as sensitive.
- Platform accounts linked to the same active Epic account, with no assumption that conflicting progress can be merged.
- Epic Games Launcher Cloud Saves enabled on PC only with an understanding of its conflict warning.
- Gameplay settings recorded manually because an official Fortnite settings export/import process is not documented.
- Old-device settings retained until the new device has been tested.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Fortnite settings automatically transfer to a new PC or console?
Epic documents account linking for cross-device progress, but its support pages do not confirm that control, sensitivity, graphics or accessibility settings synchronize. Record important values and recreate them manually.
Does Epic Games Launcher Cloud Save back up Fortnite settings?
Epic explains how to enable Cloud Saves and warns about conflicts when using multiple machines. The page does not state that Fortnite gameplay settings are included, so enabling it is not a guaranteed settings backup.
How do I recover my Epic account if I lose my phone?
At the sign-in challenge, choose “Try another way” and use an authenticator backup code. Epic describes these as eight-digit codes. Email verification is another documented route if you can access the verified email account.
Why does Fortnite say my 2FA is inactive?
Epic says a common cause is that 2FA was enabled on a different Epic account. Confirm which Epic account is linked to the platform profile and Fortnite progress, then check security settings on that account.
Can I merge Fortnite progress from two platform accounts?
Epic’s documented linking process does not combine divergent progress. Identify which platform has the progress you want to keep and follow the account-linking instructions for that account.
Which Epic 2FA method is strongest?
Epic states that using an authenticator app provides the strongest protection. Epic also lists Epic Authenticator, third-party authenticator apps, email codes and SMS codes; some regional phone numbers may not support SMS.
Should I store Fortnite settings with my password and recovery codes?
Keep settings notes separate from credentials. Settings screenshots are useful for rebuilding preferences, while passwords and eight-digit backup codes must be protected as sensitive account-recovery information.
Is copying a Fortnite configuration file an official backup method?
The relevant Epic support pages do not establish universal file locations, cross-platform compatibility or a supported configuration-file transfer procedure. Use a private written record or screenshots instead.
The Bottom Line
Protect the Epic account, not just the installation. Use a unique password, a durable verified email, 2FA and privately stored eight-digit backup codes. Link each platform to the active Epic account that owns your progress, and remember that conflicting platform progress cannot be combined through Epic’s documented process. Enable Launcher Cloud Saves on PC with its conflict warning in mind, but do not assume they contain Fortnite preferences. Until Epic documents a settings export or sync feature, screenshots or a private settings sheet are the dependable way to rebuild your controls, sensitivity, graphics, audio and accessibility choices.
