How to Balance Lesson Audio in OBS for a YouTube Study Stream

OBS can control peaks, but it will not automatically match the loudness of separate lessons. Balance each source, use filters for the problem they solve, and test a recording before streaming.

OBS can help control audio peaks, but its built-in compressor does not automatically match the average loudness of separate lesson clips. To make lessons sound more consistent, compare and adjust each source’s gain or fader, use compression only when a source has distracting differences between quiet and loud passages, and put a limiter last to catch peaks. Record and listen back before streaming; do not rely on YouTube to correct every mismatch.

What “normalizing” audio across lessons means in OBS

There are two different problems that can sound like a need to “normalize” audio:

  • One lesson is louder overall than another. This is a difference between sources. Balance the lessons individually by listening and adjusting their gain or mixer faders.
  • A lesson swings between quiet speech and loud passages. This is a difference within one source. A compressor can reduce levels above a threshold, making those swings less pronounced.

A compressor addresses the second problem; it does not measure and equalize the average loudness of each separate file. A limiter is different again: it catches peaks above its threshold but does not raise quiet sections. OBS describes these roles in its Compressor Filter and Limiter Filter documentation.

Balance lesson sources before adding filters

  1. Identify how lesson audio reaches OBS. Determine whether each lesson is a separate media source, browser audio, desktop audio, or part of one mixed source. In OBS, confirm that the sound you intend to adjust appears on the expected channel in the Audio Mixer. The exact routing depends on your scenes and capture setup.
  2. Start at the source. Play a representative passage and check the level in the lesson player or source application. Then listen as it reaches OBS. OBS recommends checking audio at the device and in OBS, adjusting one point at a time, and avoiding clipping. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.
  3. Compare lessons at representative passages. Play normal speech or teaching material from each lesson, not just its opening seconds. Listen for perceived speech level and adjust each source’s gain or mixer fader until the lessons sit in a similar range. There is no single fader value that works for every recording.
  4. Recheck transitions. Listen to the end of one lesson and the start of the next. If the level jumps, adjust the relevant source rather than assuming a compressor will match the clips for you.

When to use OBS filters—and in what order

Open the source’s Filters in OBS to add or adjust audio filters. Use only the processing that solves the problem you heard; filtering is not a substitute for balancing separate sources.

Tool Use it for What it does not do
Gain Raising a consistently quiet source while checking peak headroom. It does not control a source’s loudest passages by itself.
Compressor Reducing levels above a threshold when one source has a wide quiet-to-loud range. It does not ensure equal average loudness across separate lesson files.
Limiter Catching peaks above a set threshold. It does not raise quiet speech or balance clips.
Noise gate or suppression Addressing unwanted background noise where appropriate. These are not tools for matching lesson loudness.

OBS says a compressor usually belongs near the beginning of the filter chain, while a limiter should be last. If you use both, place the compressor before the limiter. The OBS Filters Guide describes gain and other filters.

Compressor: control variation within a lesson

Add a Compressor to a source only if its own loud and quiet passages need control. A lower threshold makes compression begin earlier; a higher ratio applies stronger reduction above the threshold. Attack and release affect how quickly the compressor responds. OBS’s displayed defaults are a threshold of -18 dB, ratio of 10:1, attack of 6 ms, release of 60 ms, and output gain of 0 dB. These are documented defaults, not universal voice settings or a required preset. Listen while adjusting, since overly strong compression can make speech sound unnatural.

Output gain raises the signal after compression. Avoid adding substantial make-up gain without checking peaks: it can use up headroom before the limiter. The OBS Compressor Filter documentation explains the filter and its typical position in the chain.

Limiter: catch excessive peaks

Add a Limiter after the other relevant filters when you need a final peak guard. OBS documents a default threshold of -6 dB and release of 60 ms; these are starting defaults, not mandatory values. Lowering the threshold caps peaks lower, but does not make quiet passages louder. Watch the meter and listen while setting it. OBS says the limiter should be the last filter in its chain; see the OBS Limiter Filter documentation.

Read OBS meters without mistaking peaks for loudness

OBS uses dBFS, where 0 dBFS is the maximum representable digital level; exceeding it can cause clipping and distortion. A peak reading tells you about momentary high levels, not the integrated perceived loudness of an entire lesson. OBS’s technical guide describes a -20 dBFS alignment level chosen near average speech and a -9 dBFS permitted maximum in its meter guidance. These are OBS meter reference values, not universal YouTube targets.

The same guide describes a VU indicator that integrates RMS over 300 ms, which is closer to perceived level than a peak meter but is still not an integrated loudness measurement. OBS notes that a proper loudness meter could instead be based on ITU-R BS.1770-2; its cited guidance does not prescribe a YouTube study-stream LUFS target. Do not treat a peak meter value or these dBFS references as a platform loudness requirement. See OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details.

Record and listen before going live

  1. Play a representative session, including ordinary speech, the loudest likely passage, and a lesson transition.
  2. Record it in OBS, then listen to the recording rather than judging only from the live meters.
  3. Check whether quiet speech remains intelligible, loud sections stay controlled, and transitions sound reasonably consistent.
  4. If one clip remains louder overall, adjust that source’s gain or fader. If one source still has an excessive internal range, revisit its compressor settings. If peaks remain too high, check the limiter and upstream gain.

OBS recommends recording a normal session and listening back before going live in its Audio Mixer Guide. Suitable monitoring headphones can help with critical listening, but they are optional; OBS does not require a particular model.

Will YouTube automatically balance lesson volume?

YouTube describes playback enhancements that may make audio clearer or more balanced. Its listed options include automatic volume and sound-mixing adjustments, Stable volume to reduce variation between quiet and loud parts, and Voice boost to emphasize speech. YouTube also says these enhancements are not applied to every video. Creators can manage the default setting for future uploads in YouTube Studio on a computer, and viewer settings or accessibility preferences can affect playback. Treat these as playback-side options, not a replacement for balancing sources in OBS.
