Use FFmpeg in a Windows batch loop to convert prerecorded files one at a time, saving the results in a separate folder. For a straightforward SDR upload, MP4 with H.264 video and compatible AAC audio is a sensible starting point; match the frame rate to the source and choose bitrate for the output resolution. This prepares files for upload—it does not send a live stream to YouTube. YouTube’s cited encoding guidance is general, not specific to India.
Batch conversion is for uploads, not live streaming
FFmpeg can convert or remux prerecorded video files. A batch script automates that work across a folder; it does not connect to YouTube Live or keep a channel live. The settings below concern YouTube uploads, not live-ingestion settings. If your goal is to broadcast prerecorded video continuously, conversion is a separate preparation step; the cloud option below addresses keeping a YouTube stream running.
Choose an output profile before converting
A practical SDR starting point
For ordinary SDR footage, use an MP4 container with H.264 video and AAC audio, and enable Fast Start so the MP4 index (the moov atom) is placed near the beginning. YouTube’s upload guidance recommends MP4, H.264, progressive scan, High Profile, two consecutive B frames, closed GOP, CABAC, variable bitrate, and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. The example command below lets libx264 select many encoder defaults; it is a starting point, not a guarantee that every recommended property is set identically in every FFmpeg build.
YouTube advises: “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” Common rates include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps; other rates are also accepted. Avoid forcing a new frame rate or resolution unless you have a reason. For SDR, YouTube recommends BT.709. The standard computer aspect ratio is 16:9, but the player adapts to vertical and square video too, so do not stretch or crop footage just to make it 16:9.

Recommended SDR upload bitrates
These are YouTube recommendations for upload encoding, not minimums, India-specific broadband requirements, or guarantees of playback quality. “Standard” and “high” refer to frame-rate classes; use the class that fits your footage.

Figures are YouTube’s SDR upload recommendations, accessed in 2026; the page does not state its publication year. SDR audio recommendations are 384 kbps for stereo, 128 kbps for mono, and 512 kbps for 5.1, separate from the video bitrate. YouTube lists AAC-LC and Opus among supported audio options and recommends 48 kHz. Eclipsa Audio is listed for eligible contexts.
When the simple profile is not suitable
- Interlaced source: deinterlace before upload. YouTube gives 1080i60 to 1080p30 as an example.
- HDR footage: do not blindly apply an SDR profile or color conversion. Preserve the appropriate HDR workflow and verify the result.
- Multiple audio tracks or subtitles: decide which streams to keep; a simple command that selects one video and one audio stream will not preserve every track or subtitle.
- Unusual codecs or containers: transcode or remux only after checking compatibility. Copying streams is not the same as converting them.

Install and check FFmpeg on Windows
- Install a Windows build of FFmpeg from a source you trust, and add its
bindirectory to your PATH, or open Command Prompt in that directory. - Open Command Prompt and run
ffmpeg -version. If Windows reports that FFmpeg is not recognized, correct PATH or use the full path toffmpeg.exe. - Put a copy of one source video in a test folder. Keep the output directory separate from the input directory.
FFmpeg options and filter syntax are interpreted by FFmpeg, while a .bat file is also parsed by Windows CMD. Shell quoting and escaping can therefore matter; test commands with paths that contain spaces. See FFmpeg command-line documentation and FFmpeg utilities documentation.
Convert one file first
For a basic SDR example, this command converts one input to MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, preserves the source frame rate and dimensions, and requests Fast Start. It uses a constant-rate-factor quality target rather than promising a particular output bitrate; inspect the resulting file and adjust for your upload target.

Create C:Videosconverted first. The optional audio map (0:a:0?) means the command can proceed when the input has no audio; the mapping selects only the first video and first audio stream. The example does not preserve subtitles or additional tracks. The 192 kbps audio value is an example, not YouTube’s listed stereo recommendation; choose audio settings for the actual content and target.
If you need a specific video bitrate instead of a CRF-based quality target, replace -crf 20 with an appropriate bitrate configuration, such as -b:v 8M for a 1080p SDR standard-frame-rate target. That recommendation is not a universal requirement; select the matching YouTube resolution and frame-rate recommendation above. Do not force 1080p or 30 fps for sources that were recorded differently without a reason.
Batch convert a folder with a .bat file
Basic loop for MP4 inputs
Save this as convert-folder.bat. This is for a Windows batch file, where the loop variable is written as %%F (at an interactive CMD prompt it would be %F). It reads only MP4 files from the input folder and writes MP4 results to a different folder, so the script will not reprocess its own outputs.

The -n option stops FFmpeg from overwriting an existing output. If you deliberately want to replace prior outputs, remove -n only after confirming the output directory. To include other input extensions, add separate loops for them or handle them with a deliberate file-listing method; do not assume every file has the same streams or conversion needs.
Check a pilot before running the folder
- Run the batch file on a few representative inputs, not the whole archive.
- Play each output and check the picture, sound, duration, orientation, and synchronization.
- Upload one sample as a private or unlisted video and check YouTube’s processing and playback before scaling the workflow.
- Confirm that the output matches your intended resolution, frame rate, and SDR/HDR treatment. Keep originals until you are satisfied.
Stream copy or re-encode?

FFmpeg transcodes by default; specify -c copy to copy streams. A stream-copy command might be ffmpeg -i "input.mkv" -c copy "output.mp4", but this is appropriate only if the source streams are compatible with MP4 and the destination. See FFmpeg documentation.

Hardware encoding is optional, not a guaranteed speed-up
FFmpeg documentation includes Windows Media Foundation hardware-encoding examples, but whether an encoder such as h264_mf is available and useful depends on the installed FFmpeg build and the PC’s hardware. Check local encoder availability with ffmpeg -encoders and consult the encoder’s options before adapting a script. Hardware and software encoding can differ in speed and output quality; there is no universal best choice or conversion-time promise for an unspecified computer. See FFmpeg full documentation.
Troubleshooting common batch-conversion problems
- “ffmpeg is not recognized”: add the FFmpeg
binfolder to PATH, reopen Command Prompt, or call the executable by its full path. - Output already exists:
-nprevents overwrite. Move or rename the old file, or intentionally remove that option if replacement is wanted. - Paths with spaces fail: quote input and output paths, including the variable expansions as shown. Avoid adding extra shell escaping without testing.
- No files are processed: confirm the input folder and extension pattern. The sample loop matches only
*.mp4. - Conversion fails on a particular file: inspect its streams and codec; unusual audio, subtitles, variable frame rate, or an unsupported input can require a file-specific map or settings.
- Audio is missing: the sample includes only the first audio stream if present. Check that the source has audio and adjust stream mapping if the desired track is not first.
- Output looks stretched, jerky, or has poor color: stop forcing aspect ratio, frame rate, resolution, or an SDR conversion that does not match the source. Preserve the recorded frame rate where possible and handle interlacing or HDR deliberately.
- YouTube rejects or processes the upload unexpectedly: confirm the container and codecs, then review YouTube’s current upload encoding guidance. Upload encoding settings do not replace YouTube Live settings.
