“Playlist stream” can mean two different things: a playlist of regular YouTube uploads, or a live broadcast that plays prerecorded videos. For regular uploads, batch conversion is a file-preparation step; for a live broadcast, a configured encoder must send a live feed to YouTube. Use the workflow below that matches your goal—converting files is not automatically necessary for every video.
Choose the workflow that matches “playlist stream”

YouTube publishes separate guidance for upload encoding settings and for live streaming. The live-stream documentation also separates HLS ingestion and DASH ingestion. Do not apply live-ingestion requirements as if they were ordinary file-conversion settings.
Batch convert files for a playlist of uploads
1. Check whether conversion is needed
Start with the original files and YouTube’s current upload guidance. Compare the files you have with the applicable requirements on YouTube’s encoding settings page. If a file already suits your upload needs, there is no reason to re-encode it just because it will be added to a playlist. Re-encoding can change quality and create another large file, so treat conversion as a targeted fix rather than a required playlist step.
2. Select a batch-capable transcoding workflow
HandBrake’s official documentation describes Web presets that use MP4 for internet sharing and Creator presets intended for services such as YouTube. These are relevant starting points when preparing files for online hosting, but a preset is not proof that every source needs conversion or that one setting is ideal for every video. Review HandBrake’s official presets and choose a suitable preset for the source and intended upload.

For a batch, add the files you want to process in your transcoding application, choose an output location and an appropriate preset, then queue the conversions. The precise batch controls vary by application and version; the available documentation does not establish a universal operating-system-specific recipe or tested speed comparison. Check the resulting files before uploading, especially if the source files differ in resolution, frame rate, or aspect ratio.
3. Upload and organize the finished videos
Upload the converted files—or the original files if they already meet your needs—through YouTube’s upload workflow. When uploads are ready, add them to a YouTube playlist and arrange the order there. A playlist organizes uploads; it does not itself turn them into a live broadcast.

4. Check rights and channel suitability
Before publishing, make sure you have the necessary rights to the video and audio. Reusing material without permission can create copyright problems, and channel monetization decisions are separate from whether a file can be uploaded. See YouTube’s copyright guidance and channel monetization policies for the current rules.
If you mean a prerecorded-video live broadcast
Batch conversion prepares files. It does not configure a live broadcast. For a playlist-style live stream, use an encoder workflow that sends a supported live feed to YouTube, and follow the requirements for the selected ingestion protocol. YouTube documents separate media and protocol requirements for HLS and DASH; choose the path that matches your encoder and YouTube setup rather than assuming an uploaded MP4 is itself a live stream.

Preflight the live setup
- Confirm that your encoder is configured for the selected YouTube ingestion workflow and that its media settings meet that workflow’s current requirements.
- Test the setup before relying on it for a broadcast. YouTube recommends testing ahead of the stream and monitoring stream health while live.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and respond to warnings; a file that plays locally does not guarantee a healthy live feed.
YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. That does not remove the need to send a supported, functioning input stream from your encoder.
Which path should you use?
- Use upload conversion when you need to prepare one or more local files for regular YouTube uploads. Consult the upload encoding guidance and convert only files that need it.
- Use live ingestion when viewers should see a continuous live broadcast rather than watch individual uploads from a playlist. Configure an encoder for a supported workflow, test it, and monitor stream health.
