To battle a specific friend in Pokémon TCG Pocket, use a Private Match and share its code. The reported menu path is Battle > Versus > Private Match; both players enter the same code. Battles unlock at level 3, according to Pokémon.com.
Before you start: unlock battles
Your account must reach level 3 to unlock battles, according to Pokémon.com’s guide to unlocking battles. Once unlocked, the game offers solo and versus battles.
How to set up a private match with a friend
- Open Battle in Pokémon TCG Pocket.
- Choose Versus, then Private Match.
- One player creates or selects a match code and shares it with the other player.
- The other player enters that same code to join the match.
These menu steps and the shared-code method were reported in a November 2024 Pokémon Community forum response and are also reflected in a Digital Trends guide. The exact current flow is not documented in the official support materials available here, so menu labels may differ in a later game version.
Private Match versus a regular versus battle
A regular versus battle can pair you with an opponent automatically. For a match with a particular person, the reported route is Private Match, where both players use the shared code. Pokémon TCG Pocket is a free-to-start mobile game for iOS and Android; physical cards are not required to begin a match. The Pokémon Company’s game page provides the official product details.

If you cannot find Private Match
- Check that you have reached level 3, the battle-unlock threshold stated by Pokémon.com.
- If you are at least level 3 and the menus still look different, check the current in-game menus or contact Pokémon Support. Its Sharing and Social FAQ, updated May 12, 2026, does not explain private-match setup, and the Battle Rules page does not provide those steps either.
The available instructions do not establish whether you must add the other player to your in-game friends list, how long a code remains valid, or whether a direct friend-list invitation is available. Do not rely on those features unless they appear in your current game.
