Adel, Baron of Night—also called Gaping Jaw—is the final boss of the third night in the Gaping Jaw Expedition. In the standard fight, poison is most valuable during phase one: when it procs, it triggers a scripted stagger. That stagger does not happen in later phases or against the Everdark Sovereign, whose fight starts in phase two. Later phases add lightning, which Adel resists, so use lightning damage negation and avoid marked strike zones.
Standard Adel: use poison during phase one
The standard encounter begins with phase one, where Adel does not use lightning. The community-maintained Adel guide reports that a poison proc causes a scripted stagger in this phase. Poison is therefore useful for more than its damage over time: it creates an opening to attack or reposition.

Adel is reported to be particularly affected by poison, with its damage-over-time applied upfront when the effect procs. The stagger is phase-specific, however. Poison will not trigger it in phase two or later, so do not build your entire plan around repeating that opening. Adel can also vomit poison onto the ground, creating a hazard; keep clear of the affected area.
What damage types work?
The community guide lists Adel as vulnerable to poison, scarlet rot, frostbite, and sleep, and resistant to fire, lightning, and blood loss. It lists immunity to madness. Treat these as community-documented game mechanics, not official balance figures; mechanics can change between game builds.

How to handle Adel’s lightning phases
Lightning enters Adel’s moveset in phase two. The guide recommends equipping lightning damage negation before the fight and moving out of marked lightning strike areas. When lightning eruptions are delayed, it recommends jumping just before they erupt. The exact timing may vary with the move and current game build, so prioritize leaving the marked area if you are unsure of the timing.
- Prepare: favor lightning damage negation for the later phases.
- Watch the ground: leave marked strike areas rather than continuing an attack.
- React to delayed eruptions: jump shortly before the eruption.
Target the head and create openings
Adel’s head is listed as a weak spot. The community guide also reports that stance pressure can break its stance and open a critical attack. In a group, stance pressure may also free an ally caught in Adel’s grab. These tactics can help create openings, but they do not replace the phase-specific poison and lightning plan.
Everdark Sovereign Adel: reach the tornado’s eye
The Everdark Sovereign version begins in phase two, so it does not include the standard fight’s phase-one poison stagger. At roughly 60% health, Adel transitions into an empowered phase three and creates a tornado. The tornado damages players outside its ring; the eye is the safe area.
Use the Spiritstreams to reach the eye of the storm. Once inside, continue watching Adel and be ready to leave the safe area if the fight’s positioning changes. The later phases still call for lightning damage negation and care around marked strike zones.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Adel | Phase one | Scripted stagger when poison procs in phase one; not in later phases. | Lightning begins in phase two; no tornado phase is reported for this version. | First victory awards Night of the Baron. |
| Everdark Sovereign | Phase two | No phase-one scripted stagger; the encounter starts after that phase. | At about 60% health, transitions to empowered phase three and creates a tornado; use Spiritstreams to reach its eye. | Sovereign Sigils are associated with a later victory; Dark Night of the Baron is reported as purchasable at the Collector Signboard after defeating the variant. |

Rewards and lore
The first victory over Adel awards the Night of the Baron relic. The community guide describes its effects as improving critical hits, filling the Art gauge on critical hits, and boosting stamina recovery on critical hits.
The relic’s lore describes Adel as once immense and regal, the apex predator of an old island. After the Night’s Tide drenched the island in azure rain and life withered, its prey disappeared and hunger drove Adel mad. The Gaping Jaw Expedition description calls it a colossal, crooked black frame with massive jaws and grinding teeth, and says poison will stop it in its tracks; that description aligns with the standard fight’s phase-one stagger mechanic.
About Adel, Baron of Night
Adel is a Nightlord in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN, encountered at the end of the Gaping Jaw Expedition’s third night. The community guide reports solo health of 13,140 and trio health of 39,420; these are game-data figures from that page, not independently confirmed official values.
