Use Grass- or Water-type attacks to exploit Brock’s Geodude and Onix, both Rock/Ground Pokémon; avoid relying on Electric moves, which cannot affect them. Brock’s team is level 12 Geodude and level 14 Onix, and Onix can use Rock Tomb.

What Pokémon does Brock use?

Brock is the Pewter City Gym Leader and the first Gym Leader you battle in Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen. His team is:

Pokémon Level Type Battle note
Geodude 12 Rock/Ground Grass- and Water-type attacks are effective; Electric attacks have no effect.
Onix 14 Rock/Ground Grass- and Water-type attacks are effective; it can use Rock Tomb.

Which attacks work best against Brock?

Use Grass or Water damage

Both of Brock’s Pokémon are weak to Grass- and Water-type attacks, making either type a strong choice if you have one available. Bulbasaur and Squirtle have favorable matchups as starters. You do not need to build your entire team around this fight; prioritize bringing at least one Pokémon that can deal Grass or Water damage.

Do not use Electric attacks

Geodude and Onix are also Ground-type, so Electric attacks do not affect them. Choose another move rather than spending turns on Electric damage.

How should you prepare for Onix’s Rock Tomb?

Onix can use Rock Tomb, so Pokémon vulnerable to Rock attacks can be a riskier choice. Serebii identifies Charmander, Beedrill, and Pidgeotto as vulnerable examples. That does not make them automatic losses, but it is a reason not to rely on one of them as your only plan when you can bring a better matchup.

What do you get for defeating Brock?

Brock awards the Boulder Badge and TM39, which teaches Rock Tomb. The Boulder Badge slightly raises Attack in battle and lets you use Flash in the field.
