First identify what your team needs and what the opposing side is trying to do; then pick an available champion who can help meet those needs, adjust your build and plan, and play around the strengths you still have.
Start with the fight, not the missing champion
A ban removes one option; it does not decide the fight by itself. The useful question is not “Who is most like my main?” but “What does my team need from this pick, and what will make this encounter difficult?” The answer depends on the game, mode, matchup, patch or version, and the rest of both teams. Without those details, no particular substitute can responsibly be called the best.

Before choosing, separate the problem into three parts: the job your preferred champion would have done, the threat or plan you need to answer, and the options your team already has. This prevents a common mistake: selecting a familiar character who duplicates something the team already does well while leaving its actual weakness unaddressed.

Describe the contribution in plain language. Depending on the game, it might be dependable damage, the ability to take pressure, an opening for teammates to engage, protection for a vulnerable ally, or a way to interfere with a particular opponent. These are strategic categories, not universal game mechanics; the exact meaning of each depends on the title and mode.

Try to name one primary job and, if useful, one secondary job. “I need to start fights and create space” is more actionable than “I need someone like my main.” A backup might not reproduce every tool your preferred champion has, but it can still perform the most important job for this specific encounter.
Identify what makes the encounter difficult
Look at the opponent’s likely plan and at the conditions that could make your team struggle. Is the main concern a hard-to-reach target, pressure that your team cannot withstand, an enemy who needs to be interrupted or contained, or a fight that your team cannot begin on favorable terms? Keep the diagnosis specific enough to guide a choice. “Their team is strong” does not tell you what to do; “we have no reliable way to challenge their back-line pressure” points toward a problem to solve.
Then check whether the difficulty comes from the opponent or from your own composition. If the enemy plan is the problem, look for a backup who can disrupt it. If your team lacks a necessary contribution regardless of the matchup, prioritize filling that gap. A counterpick that does not fit your team’s needs may solve one issue and create another.

Choose a backup by role coverage and fit
League of Legends offers a useful example of role-based selection, though the title does not specify League and the advice here should not be mistaken for a game-specific recommendation. Riot Games’ Choosing the Right Champion support guidance describes distinct champion roles and encourages players to consider roles when choosing. Its practical lesson generalizes: compare available choices by what they contribute, rather than by surface resemblance alone.
Use the criteria below to compare the champions actually available in your game. They are decision questions, not a universal ranking or published performance list.

Use a two-pass selection
First, make a shortlist of available champions that can handle the primary job. Then compare only those candidates against the specific matchup and your team’s existing strengths. This keeps the decision manageable and avoids choosing a character merely because they are popular, familiar to teammates, or considered a generic counter.

If no candidate covers every need, rank the needs. In a difficult fight, trying to fix every weakness with one pick can produce a choice that does nothing reliably. Decide which failure would be most costly and select for that first. If another teammate can cover the secondary need, coordinate around that division of responsibility.

A hard fight is often easier to plan for when you ask what the other side needs in order to succeed. Does its approach depend on one threat being left alone, on your team being drawn into a particular kind of engagement, or on your composition lacking an answer to a repeated tactic? The goal is not to predict every move. It is to identify the dependency that your team can realistically challenge.
Riot Games’ /dev: Balancing for Pro Play discusses professional draft strategy, counters to dominant strategies, and the value of having multiple strategic options. That article concerns professional play and is older; its historical presence thresholds and diversity targets are not current, universal advice for ordinary matches. Its relevant strategic point is narrower: draft choices interact, and having more than one way to approach a contest can matter.
Turn the opponent’s plan into a practical question
- If their plan depends on one opponent staying free to act: ask whether your backup can pressure or limit that opponent without abandoning your team’s own needs.
- If their plan depends on forcing a kind of fight your team dislikes: consider whether the backup can help your team avoid, delay, or reshape that encounter, where the game allows it.
- If their plan exploits a missing team function: prioritize an available pick that restores that function, even if it is not a direct matchup counter.
- If the opposing plan is unclear: favor the choice you can execute reliably and coordinate with your team, rather than inventing a precise counter to a guess.
A counter is useful only if it contributes to a workable team plan. Do not trade away the role your team needs just to make one opposing champion less comfortable. Likewise, do not assume that choosing a nominal counter automatically wins a matchup; execution, coordination, game rules, and version-specific balance still matter.
Adjust the build and team plan together
A substitute may need a different setup or a different way of approaching the fight. Riot’s League of Legends support guidance treats recommended builds as templates and encourages experimentation to find a build that suits the player and team. Apply that advice as permission to adapt—not as a guarantee that any change will work, and not as a claim about every game.
Before locking in a change, connect it to the problem you diagnosed. Ask what the adjustment is intended to accomplish and whether the rest of the team’s plan supports it. A build change with no clear purpose can distract from the more important issue: whether the team knows how it intends to handle the encounter.

Make one purposeful adjustment at a time
- State the need: describe the problem in a sentence, such as “we need to withstand their pressure” or “we need a way to challenge their preferred target.”
- Identify the available option: select a champion whose role or strengths can contribute to that need.
- Choose an adaptation that serves the plan: use the game’s available build or strategic choices to support the contribution you expect from that champion.
- Tell the team what changes: explain whether you will provide a particular kind of pressure, protection, initiation, or other contribution, using terms that make sense in your game.
- Check the result in play: notice whether the adjustment is helping your team address the diagnosed problem. If it is not, revise the approach rather than continuing simply because it was the original plan.
The exact items, abilities, settings, and build paths cannot be specified without knowing the game, mode, and relevant version. Avoid treating a general strategy article or a recommended setup as a substitute for checking the current in-game options and rules.
Coordinate so the backup has a job
A capable substitute can still feel ineffective when the team expects it to do something it was not chosen to do. State the contribution you can reliably offer and, when possible, ask teammates to cover the part your preferred champion would have handled. This turns a missing pick into a change in team plan rather than an unspoken expectation that one player will reproduce the unavailable champion’s entire kit.
Keep the communication short and actionable. For example: “I can cover the initiation role, but we still need someone to protect our damage dealer,” or “I can pressure that threat; let’s avoid taking the kind of fight that leaves me unable to help.” These are generic examples, not instructions for a specific game’s terminology or mechanics.

Set expectations before the fight
- Agree on the main threat or team weakness you are trying to address.
- Make clear which player or pick is responsible for each important contribution.
- Decide what the team should do if the opponent avoids the plan you prepared for.
- Leave room to adapt if the matchup, objective, or encounter develops differently than expected.
Do not overpromise. If you are playing an unfamiliar backup, tell the team what you know you can do rather than claiming it is a perfect substitute. That makes it easier for teammates to plan around the actual pick and reduces the chance that they rely on a tool your champion does not provide.
Execute the plan without forcing your main’s old playstyle
The replacement may have a different set of strengths, so copying your main’s approach can waste the reason you chose the backup. Before the fight, remind yourself of the job you selected it to do. During the encounter, prioritize that job over imitating habits that only work on your preferred champion.
Use the game’s own signals and rules to judge whether the moment is suitable. If the backup was chosen to help the team withstand pressure, do not abandon that contribution just to chase a target. If it was chosen to contest a specific threat, look for a safe, coordinated opportunity to do so rather than assuming the pick can win a direct confrontation alone. These are strategic principles; the precise timing and mechanics are game-dependent.

Review the decision, not just the result
After the fight, separate the pick decision from the execution. A loss does not prove that the backup was wrong, and a win does not prove that every choice was sound. Ask whether the champion covered the intended role, whether the build and team plan supported that role, and whether the team actually played around the plan. That review helps identify whether the next improvement is a different selection, better coordination, or more practice with the same backup.
Build a small, practiced set of alternatives
It is easier to adapt under pressure if you have already tried alternatives before your preferred champion is banned. Prepare a few role-appropriate backups that you can play with reasonable confidence. There is no evidence here for a universal number of champions to practice, and the useful size of a pool depends on the game, mode, role, and time you can devote to learning.
Choose backups for distinct needs where possible, rather than collecting several choices that all perform the same job. One might cover a missing team function; another might be a more comfortable option when the matchup is uncertain. The purpose is not to master every character. It is to avoid being forced into a completely unfamiliar choice whenever the preferred one is unavailable.
Practice for decisions, not only mechanics
- Play each backup enough to understand its basic role and what contribution your team can expect from it.
- Try it in situations where your main would normally be selected, then note what the backup does differently.
- Practice identifying a clear team need before choosing, rather than picking first and inventing a reason afterward.
- Review whether your build and approach matched the job you intended to perform.
- Keep the pool current for the game and mode you play; a previous version or a different mode may change which options are available or appropriate.
Riot’s professional-play discussion addresses champion diversity and strategic options in a professional context. It does not establish that a particular pool size improves an individual player’s results. Practicing alternatives is a practical recommendation for handling bans and unavailable picks, not a measured guarantee of better outcomes.

Choosing only by similarity
A champion that looks or feels like your main may not cover the role your team needs. Translate the missing pick into a job first, then compare substitutes by role coverage and matchup response.

A choice that challenges one opponent may leave your own composition without a necessary contribution. Check the whole team’s needs before committing, and coordinate if another player can cover the gap.

Expecting the backup to do everything
A substitute may cover the most important job without reproducing every strength of the unavailable champion. Set realistic expectations, prioritize the contribution that matters most, and adapt the team plan around what the pick actually offers.
Following a recommended setup without a reason
A recommendation is a starting point, not proof that the same setup fits every situation. Decide what the encounter requires and make an adjustment only when you can explain how it supports the plan.
Changing too many things at once
If you change your pick, build, and team approach without a clear priority, it is difficult to tell what helped or failed. Keep the intended job explicit and make adaptations that address it.
Blaming the ban or the result instead of reviewing the plan
A ban explains why your preferred option was unavailable; it does not show whether the backup decision was sound. Review the role, matchup, coordination, and execution separately before deciding what to practice next.
What can and cannot be recommended without the game
The title does not name a game, mode, role, matchup, or version. Those details determine which champions are available, what their roles mean, how builds work, and which strategies are viable. League of Legends is the only game for which the official guidance discussed here is relevant, so Riot’s material is an example—not evidence that the assignment necessarily refers to League.
Accordingly, this guide can offer a selection method but cannot name a best substitute, list current builds, state a matchup win rate, or promise that a particular counter will work. Riot’s pro-play article is older and concerns professional draft balance; its historical champion-presence thresholds should not be applied as current targets for ordinary play. For a game-specific recommendation, the minimum useful context is the title, mode, your role, the unavailable champion, the opposing picks or threat, the rest of your team’s composition, and the relevant patch or version. Until then, the soundest decision is to choose an available champion for the encounter’s most important job and build the team plan around what that pick can reliably contribute.
