To beat a Furnace Golem in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, first identify its leg type. Attack one unarmored leg from Torrent until the golem falls, then critical-hit its exposed face. If the legs are armored, use elevated terrain and throw Hefty Furnace Pots into the furnace opening at the top instead.
There are two ways to beat Furnace Golems in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree:

- Normal legs: circle one leg on Torrent, attack until the golem falls, then perform the critical hit on its exposed face.
- Armored legs: stop attacking the legs and throw Hefty Furnace Pots into the furnace opening at the top of the golem. You need elevated ground, a cliff, or a Spiritspring to reach it.
The second method is the important exception. If a Furnace Golem has reinforced legs, repeatedly hitting its feet will not produce the usual stagger. Prepare the correct pots before starting those encounters.

How to beat a normal Furnace Golem
1. Fight from Torrent
Summon Torrent before engaging. Mounted movement lets you circle the golem, leave the danger zone quickly, and jump over the expanding flame waves produced by its foot attacks. Torrent is also useful when the golem starts a ranged fire attack and you need to create distance immediately.

Do not treat Torrent as a substitute for positioning. Stay near one leg and move around it rather than charging directly between the golem’s feet. Avoid lingering in front of the Furnace Golem, where its grab, frontal fire, and other forward-facing attacks are most dangerous.
2. Choose one leg and keep pressure on it
Target one vulnerable leg and continue attacking it. Repeatedly switching between both legs makes the fight longer and makes it harder to recognize the next attack. When possible, watch the opposite leg as well: its movement often gives you an early indication that a stomp or kick is coming.

- enough mobility to escape or jump the golem’s area attacks; and
- a reliable way to reach and use the critical opening after the knockdown.
Ranged attacks can help draw the golem toward you or reposition it, but staying at long range exposes you to more fireballs, falling fire, and tracking or erupting attacks. For most builds, close-range leg pressure is the more controllable approach.

3. Jump the flame waves instead of panic-rolling
When the golem stomps, its foot can create a broad, ground-level wave of fire. On Torrent, jump over the expanding wave when you are close enough to see it coming. If you are already outside the immediate area, continue moving rather than stopping to roll repeatedly.
Running sideways on Torrent is generally safer than trying to roll every projectile. For the largest furnace eruptions or a dangerous combination of attacks, use cover if it is available or retreat fully until the pattern ends.
4. Punish the stagger immediately
Continue attacking the chosen leg until the Furnace Golem loses its balance and falls face-first. This knockdown is the encounter’s main damage window. Do not retreat just because the golem has fallen.

Furnace Golem attacks to recognize
| Attack or danger | What to do |

| Foot stomp and expanding flame wave | Jump the wave with Torrent, or move clear of the affected area. |
| Kick or sweeping foot movement | Stay beside the leg rather than directly in front of it; watch the opposite leg for movement cues. |
| Ranged fire from the furnace | Run sideways on Torrent to avoid projectiles. Retreat or use cover for a large eruption. |
| Falling or tracking fire | Keep moving and avoid standing still beneath the effect. Do not waste time rolling at every projectile if lateral movement is enough. |
| Frontal grab | Move behind or beside the golem. Being caught can place you directly in the furnace’s flames. |
The safest general position is beside or behind one leg. The most dangerous position is directly in front of the Furnace Golem, especially while it is facing you and has room to use its grab or frontal fire attacks.
How to beat armored-leg Furnace Golems
Some Furnace Golems have armored or reinforced legs. The normal strategy does not work reliably against these enemies because their legs prevent the usual stagger. Do not spend the entire encounter hitting their feet.
- Find a nearby cliff, elevated platform, hillside, or Spiritspring.
- Position yourself so you are close to the height of the golem’s upper furnace.
- Equip a Hefty Furnace Pot.
- Aim for the opening at the top of the burning basket or furnace.
- Throw the pot into the opening, not at the outer mask, head covering, or legs.
- Repeat as needed while using the elevation and Torrent to avoid the golem’s attacks.
“Hit the head” is an imprecise description of this method. The target is the furnace opening inside the basket at the top. A pot that strikes the external mask or the surrounding structure may not count as a successful hit.
Armored encounters are reported near Charo’s Hidden Grave and east of the Cathedral of Manus Metyr. The golem at the Ruins of Unte has an additional requirement: one of the golems is inactive. Throw a Hefty Furnace Pot into its furnace to awaken it, then use the method appropriate to that encounter.

How to prepare Hefty Furnace Pots
Hefty Furnace Pots require Hefty Cracked Pots, Furnace Visages, and the other ingredients listed in their crafting recipe. The reusable-pot system means the Hefty Cracked Pot container itself is not permanently consumed when you use the throwable. The crafting ingredients are the limiting resource.
Before hunting the armored golems:
- Obtain the relevant Greater Potentate’s Cookbook.
- Make sure you have enough Hefty Cracked Pots.
- Gather Furnace Visages and the remaining crafting materials.
- Craft the pots before approaching the arena rather than trying to prepare during the encounter.
- Clear nearby enemies around the elevated throwing position.
- Reserve at least one Hefty Furnace Pot if you are going to awaken the inactive golem at Ruins of Unte.
There is no universally correct number of pots to bring. Damage depends on your game progression, build, and the specific encounter. Bring more than the minimum you expect to need so a missed throw does not force a return trip.
Where to find all eight Furnace Golems
Shadow of the Erdtree contains eight Furnace Golem encounters across the Realm of Shadow. Each defeated golem awards a Crystal Tear for the Flask of Wondrous Physick, along with a Furnace Visage associated with the encounter. The route below gives the broad region and the reported reward; reaching some areas requires exploration through surrounding zones.

Furnace Visages also matter outside the rewards screen: they are used when crafting Hefty Furnace Pots. If you intend to clear the armored encounters later, avoid treating every Furnace Visage as disposable crafting material before you have prepared the pots you need.

Which Furnace Golem should you fight first?
The Furnace Golem in Gravesite Plain near the Scorched Ruins is a sensible first target. Its reward, the Deflecting Hardtear, can materially change guard timing and defensive behavior. That does not make the fight mandatory or automatically easy. You can postpone it while improving equipment, learning Torrent’s movement, and increasing your Scadutree progression.
If the first golem is killing you before you can reach the legs, the problem is usually not a missing special weapon. Improve survivability and Scadutree progression, then return with a plan for the stomp waves and the critical opening. A build that can repeatedly pressure one leg is more useful here than a build chosen only for high theoretical burst damage.
Common mistakes
- Attacking both legs randomly: choose one leg and keep pressure on it.
- Rolling every flame wave: jump the ground wave with Torrent or run out of range.
- Standing in front of the golem: move beside or behind it to reduce grab and frontal-fire exposure.
- Running away after the knockdown: ride to the face and use the critical attack.
- Using normal attacks on armored legs: look for elevation and switch to Hefty Furnace Pots.
- Throwing pots at the mask: aim into the furnace opening at the top of the basket.
- Forgetting the sleeping Ruins of Unte golem: reserve a Hefty Furnace Pot to wake it.
- Assuming an exact pot count: bring a reserve because damage and missed throws vary by player and encounter.
