Raise your Shadow Realm Blessings first, build for the damage you are taking, and prepare for phase two, where Miquella adds holy attacks. There is no single best build: the right approach depends on your stamina, gear, and ability to read his timing.
Know what changed in patch 1.14
Promised Consort Radahn is the final boss of Shadow of the Erdtree, and older guides may describe launch-version behavior. Bandai Namco’s version 1.14 patch notes, published September 10, 2024, document changes to the fight: the opening action pattern was adjusted, some moves were changed, damage and stamina damage were reduced for some attacks, the range of some non-weapon attacks was shortened, and the visibility of some effects was improved.
The notes do not specify every move or provide a complete revised moveset. Treat older timing advice as a starting point, not a guarantee that every detail still matches the current encounter.
Prepare for the fight you are having
Raise Shadow Realm Blessings
Collect Scadutree Fragments and Revered Spirit Ashes to improve your Shadow Realm Blessings before attempting the fight. These upgrades are intended for the DLC’s challenges and can make a meaningful difference to your damage and survivability. GameSpot’s author reported defeating Radahn at blessing levels 17 and 9; those are personal playthrough figures, not required or recommended thresholds.

Prioritize survival without sacrificing mobility
High Vigor and strong physical defense help with the first phase’s pressure. For armor, EIP Gaming recommends high physical negation while retaining a medium roll. If your equipment load forces a heavy roll, reduce weight or change gear: a defensive setup is useful only if you can still evade attacks when blocking is not enough.
Phase two introduces holy damage. If you have access to them, EIP Gaming suggests options such as Lord’s Divine Fortification, Golden Braid, and Pearldrake Talisman +3. These are possible tools rather than mandatory equipment; choose based on what is available to your character and what is causing your deaths.
Decide how you want to defend
Pick a main approach before entering rather than switching randomly between blocking and rolling. A greatshield-and-thrusting-weapon setup gives you a steadier defense and lets you attack while guarding, but it still costs stamina and can let chip damage through. Dodging avoids more damage when timed well, but demands that you learn his delayed swings and recognize when a combo has actually finished.
| Approach | What it offers | Main cost or demand | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greatshield plus thrusting weapon | Lets you attack while guarding and reduces reliance on precise rolls. | Needs stamina management, suitable stats and equipment load; some chip damage may get through. | Players who prefer stable defense and have compatible gear. |
| Dodge through combos and counter | Avoids much of the damage and creates openings after combos. | Requires learning delayed timing and identifying combo endings. | Players comfortable with reactive dodging. |
| Status-oriented weapon | Can add damage over time or burst damage from status procs. | Requires compatible weapons, setup and repeated safe hits. | Players whose build already supports status application. |
| Summons | Can draw attention and create room to heal or attack from range. | Summon choices and encounter scaling can affect the fight. | Players who benefit from divided aggro and openings. |
| Parrying | Can stagger Radahn after repeated successful parries. | Demands accurate timing and repeated exposure to dangerous attacks. | Experienced players who already parry reliably. |
Consider status and summons as optional tools
EIP Gaming highlights rot as useful in phase one and also discusses bleed, frost, and poison. Its Antspur Rapier suggestion is one status-oriented route; a bleed Ash of War is a possible addition. Status is not a substitute for avoiding combos, since you still need safe opportunities to land hits.

Summons can divide Radahn’s attention and give you room to heal or use ranged attacks, as GameSpot notes. EIP Gaming favors Mimic Tear for its own strategy and argues against NPC allies in that setup. The practical choice depends on your build and approach: an ally may create openings, but summon choices can affect how the encounter plays out.
Phase one: avoid the opening and punish combo endings
Get through the opening before setting up
GameSpot describes an opening meteor dive. Avoid it before starting a long casting animation or summoning; an interrupted setup can cost health before the fight properly begins. Once you have created space, use the opportunity to apply buffs or call a spirit if that is part of your plan.
Stay close enough to move around him
Radahn’s melee strings can cover ground and punish retreating in a straight line. GameSpot recommends dodging toward him rather than backing away, while EIP Gaming advises moving left past him for some follow-ups. The exact direction depends on the attack, but the shared principle is to evade through or around the swing instead of reflexively rolling backward.
Do not roll as soon as every animation begins. Some swings have delayed follow-ups; rolling too early can leave you recovering when the next hit arrives. Watch the weapon and body movement, dodge the strike, then wait to see whether the string continues.

Use recovery windows, not guesses
Many phase-one openings come after a combo ends. With a dodge-focused build, land a short punish after the final hit rather than trying to trade in the middle of a string. With a greatshield, use light attacks from a weapon that can thrust while guarding, then watch stamina closely. Recover stamina during lulls so you can block or evade the next sequence.

Miquella appears as the second phase begins, and Radahn’s attacks gain holy effects and area damage. EIP Gaming recommends dodging toward Radahn and to the left to avoid much of the holy artillery. GameSpot describes an opening bombardment and attacks that combine a melee strike with subsequent holy damage; move laterally when the area attack begins, and do not assume that avoiding the weapon swing also clears the follow-up.
Keep the same basic rhythm: evade the sequence, confirm it has ended, then punish briefly. Preserve enough stamina for another response rather than emptying the bar on attacks or holding guard continuously. If your shield is letting too much holy damage through, strengthen holy defense or switch to dodging selected holy and gravity attacks instead of trying to block everything.
What to change if attempts keep failing
- You die before you can start: Avoid the opening attack first, then cast or summon. Do not begin with a long setup animation while the meteor dive is incoming.
- You are caught by follow-ups: Delay your dodge until the swing is actually committed, and watch for a second hit before attacking.
- You keep running out of stamina: Shorten guard attacks, stop holding the shield through every lull, and use recovery windows to refill. A greatshield is a defense, not permission to absorb an entire sequence.
- Phase two chips you down: Add holy mitigation if available, and dodge the holy follow-up instead of judging safety by the melee strike alone.
- You rarely get damage in: Attack only after a clear combo ending. If your weapon requires long animations, use shorter punishes or choose a setup that can attack safely while guarding.
- You are relying on a summon but not getting space: Reassess whether that summon suits your build. Summons can draw aggro, but they do not remove the need to recognize attacks and manage your own stamina.
Is parrying a good strategy?
Radahn can be parried, but Elden Ring Wiki.gg’s Promised Consort Radahn entry says three successful parries are required to stagger him. That makes parrying a practiced option, not an easy shortcut: you must land repeated, well-timed parries against dangerous moves. Choose it if parrying is already a strength, rather than learning it as your only plan for this fight.
