There are two Ghostflame Dragon encounters in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. Both are most manageable when you watch for the expanding ghostflame ring and frostbite breath, attack the legs during safe openings, and save heavier hits for the dragon’s recovery after a stagger. Use Torrent to reposition or escape, then fight on foot when you want tighter control of your attacks.
Where to find the Ghostflame Dragons
Gravesite Plain
From the Greatbridge, North Site of Grace, travel west to the shallow lake near the Abandoned Ailing Village. A Ghostflame Dragon lies asleep there; approaching wakes it. Push Square recommends level 150, while Game8 recommends level 160 or higher. These are guide suggestions, not entry requirements: readiness also depends on your build, Scadutree Blessing and skill. Scadu Altus
Another encounter is near Fort of Reprimand in Scadu Altus, where soldiers are already fighting the dragon. Their presence can make positioning and target selection harder. You can wait to see how the fight develops or deal with enemies that disrupt your approach; the guides do not establish one best way to handle the soldiers. How to handle its dangerous attacks
Evade the ghostflame stomp ring
When the dragon slams a foot down and ghostflame spreads from the impact, stop attacking and evade the expanding ring. It travels outward from the stomp, so staying close and continuing your combo can leave you in its path. Neoseeker describes the ring attack alongside the dragon’s other moves. Neoseeker

Leave the breath stream
Move out of the breath attack rather than standing in its path. The breath builds Frostbite; Game8 notes that Frostbite deals significant damage and increases the damage you take from subsequent attacks. Game8
Watch your position around its body
Staying near the legs can create melee openings, but close range is not automatically safe. Neoseeker lists lunging bites and wing sweeps in front of the dragon, stomps around its feet, and a tail whip behind it. Be ready to change position rather than assuming one side of the dragon is protected. Neoseeker
Where to attack and when to punish
Use openings around the legs for regular attacks, and build bleed if your weapon or setup supports it. Push Square recommends targeting the legs and following a stagger with a heavy attack to the glowing orange head. That gives you a clear sequence: attack during a safe opening, stop when a major area attack begins, then use the stagger window for a stronger punish. Push Square
Push Square also notes that Mimic Tear Ashes can be summoned to draw the dragon’s attention. A summon can create room to attack, but you still need to watch the stomp and breath rather than relying on the distraction to make you safe. Push Square

Should you fight on foot or use Torrent?

The guides frame Torrent differently: Game8 favors fighting on foot and saving Torrent for escape, while Push Square suggests riding underneath the dragon to target its legs. Treat them as alternatives, not a contradiction you must resolve with a single rule: use Torrent when speed helps you reposition or get out of danger, and dismount when you can safely manage close-range attacks. Do Holy damage or bleed help?
Push Square recommends building bleed where available. Neoseeker reports that the dragon is weak to Holy damage, but that claim is less firmly established than the location and attack details in the available guides. Holy damage is an optional build-specific choice, not a guaranteed shortcut; there is no need to respec or seek a particular weapon just for this fight. Push Square; Neoseeker
