When it rises for the blue ghostflame attack, stop attacking and focus on surviving the waves: they deal heavy damage and build Frostbite. Holy damage is a strong option, while bleed can also work; neither is required.
Where to find the Putrescent Knight
The Putrescent Knight waits at the end of the Stone Coffin Fissure, in the Fissure Depths in the southern Realm of Shadow. Follow the route to the Fissure Depths Site of Grace, then descend the chasm to reach the encounter. Push Square’s guide describes the final drop into the boss fight.
The boss is optional for completing the DLC’s main progression, but defeating it is necessary to advance Thiollier and St. Trina’s questlines, according to EIP Gaming’s boss guide. The guides report a reward of 220,000 runes and the Remembrance of Putrescence. Push Square recommends level 160, but that is a guide recommendation, not a game requirement; your build and Scadutree Blessing level also affect how the fight feels.
Prepare for the fight
Choose damage your build can land reliably
EIP Gaming recommends holy damage and names the Black Knife, Sacred Relic Sword, Multilayered Ring of Light, Holy-Shrouding Cracked Tear, and Holy Grease as options. Use what suits your build rather than treating any one weapon or buff as mandatory. Push Square also recommends bleed when you can build the status meter. Scarlet Rot is another possibility, but EIP Gaming notes that the Knight’s mobility makes it harder to apply consistently.

Decide whether to summon
A Spirit Ash such as Mimic Tear can provide support. If you are progressing Thiollier’s quest, EIP Gaming says his summon sign may be available depending on your earlier quest progress; it is not a guaranteed option at the arena.
Address Frostbite if it is ending your attempts
The ghostflame attack builds Frostbite. If that is repeatedly causing trouble, EIP Gaming suggests increasing robustness through Endurance, suitable equipment or talismans, and temporary cured meat items. Check each item’s effect and decide whether the defensive trade-off fits your character.

How to handle the Knight’s attacks
Keep the mount in view
The mount is not just transport: it can attack while separated from the Knight and charge from outside your camera view. Locking on to the Knight can make the mount harder to track, so move the camera and briefly unlock when needed to keep both threats visible.
Dodge the cleaver, then take short openings
The Knight attacks with its cleaver, including a thrown attack, and uses a leaping sequence that transitions into a roll. Dodge the swings and thrown weapon, then avoid committing to a long combo. After the leaping and rolling sequence, wait for the Knight’s remounting animation; that end cue is a safer opportunity to punish than attacking while the sequence is still underway. EIP Gaming advises dodging toward the boss for many attacks, but adjust to the angle and attack rather than rolling blindly.

Prioritize survival during the ghostflame waves
When the Knight rises into its large blue-flame attack, focus on avoiding the waves instead of trying to squeeze in damage. Push Square describes three rounds of waves that deal heavy damage and build Frostbite. EIP Gaming recommends rolling toward the flames. Learn the visual cue and time your rolls through the waves; a mistimed attack can leave you exposed to the full sequence.

Do you need the DLC to fight the Putrescent Knight?
