To beat the Scadutree Avatar, target its sunflower head, punish its recovery animations, and save your critical hits for the openings after its first two health bars. The optional boss is in Scadutree Base, beneath Shadow Keep’s Church District. Its third phase adds a dangerous light burst and beams, so dodge when the attack releases—not when the boss first begins charging.
Where to find the Scadutree Avatar
The optional fight takes place in Scadutree Base, below Shadow Keep’s Church District in northern Scadu Altus. This route assumes you have reached that part of Shadow of the Erdtree; the boss is not required to complete the main DLC route. Windows Central’s location guide and GamesRadar+’s boss guide describe the route through the district.
- Enter the Church District and cross the flooded rooftops and rafters to reach the water-drain mechanism.
- Drain the district, then return to ground level.
- Enter the church containing a statue of Marika and take its elevator down to the arena.
Prepare for the fight
Use the Shadow Realm Blessing if you need more survivability
Scadutree Fragments activate and strengthen the Shadow Realm Blessing, which increases the damage you deal and reduces the damage you take in the Realm of Shadow. Revered Spirit Ash Blessing strengthens summoned spirits and Torrent. If the Avatar is killing you quickly or your attacks feel weak, look for more fragments and activate the blessings from a Site of Grace. Bandai Namco’s official guidance explains both blessing systems.
Bring fire if it fits your build, and aim for the head
Boss guides identify fire as a strong damage option and the sunflower head as a better target than the stalk. A fire-infused weapon or fire spell can help, but neither is required; use a weapon and approach you can handle reliably. The head is often raised or moving, so take a clear opening rather than forcing a risky hit. The available guides do not establish consistent resistance percentages or a definitive ranking for other damage types.

Choose a range that lets you punish safely
Close-range fighters can exploit head openings after melee attacks, but must read the swipes and slams. Ranged fighters can keep room to react to melee moves, though they still need to aim for the head and watch for projectiles and charges. Whichever style you use, preserve enough stamina to dodge; do not chase the boss through an attack sequence just to stay in range.
How the three phases work
The Avatar has three health bars. It returns after the first and second bars are depleted, but each collapse creates a critical-hit opportunity. Taking that hit can reduce the health it carries into the next phase. Use the opening if you are safely positioned; otherwise, avoid trading damage just to reach it.

Phase 1: Learn the melee rhythm
The first phase uses broad root or arm swipes, head thrusts, slams, ground thorns, and ranged thorn or light projectiles. Dodge through or toward many of the readable melee attacks so you can stay close enough to punish the head, rather than retreating so far that you lose your opening.
- Against a multi-slam sequence, wait for the delayed final slam before attacking. It is followed by a small area attack, according to Windows Central.
- After the first health bar, use the critical-hit opening if you can reach it safely. Heal or rebuff during the transition if needed.
- The thorn attacks can build bleed, according to Windows Central. If that is the damage ending your attempts, consider equipment or consumables that improve bleed mitigation or Robustness; this is an optional adjustment, not a fight requirement.
Phase 2: Dodge every charge and wait out longer combos
The second phase adds repeated charges and extends some existing combinations. Watch the wind-up, dodge each pass, and close in only after the full sequence ends. Do not assume the familiar first two sweeps are the end: a later slam can follow. Once the second health bar is depleted, take the critical-hit opening to reduce the final phase’s health if it is safe.

Phase 3: Dodge the light burst at its release
The final phase adds a major light attack: the Avatar rises and charges before releasing an explosion or beams. The key is timing. Do not roll as soon as the charge begins; wait for the actual release, then dodge while staying aware of the paths the beams can leave across the ground. EIP Gaming’s guide warns that damaging rays follow just after the flash, so an early dodge can leave you exposed. The attack’s recovery can give you time to punish the head.
Keep a more defensive rhythm in this phase. Charges and the ranged attack can open distance, but running after the boss may put you into another attack. Hold position when it is safe, dodge the tell, and take a head opening after the sequence finishes.
