Reach level 50, start the Leap of Faith questline at a new landmark in the Savage Divide, and complete it. Finishing the quest transforms your character into a ghoul. Before you begin, consider the changes to faction interactions and how returning to ghoul form works if you later reverse the transformation.
Requirements to become a ghoul
Bethesda’s guide sets the requirement at level 50. The transformation is tied to the Leap of Faith questline; the official instructions do not list a paid item or real-world radiation as a requirement. Bethesda’s ghoul guide explains the level requirement and quest.

How to start and complete Leap of Faith
- Reach level 50 in Fallout 76.
- Travel to the new landmark in the Savage Divide and begin the Leap of Faith questline.
- Complete the questline. Its conclusion transforms your character and grants ghoul-specific abilities and perks.
Bethesda introduced the quest with the Ghoul Within update on March 18, 2025. The announcement describes meeting characters at the Savage Divide landmark who help with the transformation. Read Bethesda’s Ghoul Within announcement.

Faction access and reactions
Some factions may refuse to interact with a ghoul, while others may attack on sight. Bethesda says Jaye can help you obtain a disguise that allows access to content that would otherwise be blocked. Characters may also react differently to your altered appearance. Bethesda’s Ghoul Within release notes describe these interaction changes.

Radiation and Glow
Ghoul mechanics have changed since the 2025 launch. In its June 2, 2026 Infestations update notes, Bethesda says player ghouls convert 35% of radiation damage taken after resistances into health; once at full health, that converted amount becomes Glow instead. See Bethesda’s June 2026 update notes.
Can you change back to a human?
Yes. Bethesda says you can return to human form from the character menu. The original Leap of Faith questline cannot be repeated afterward; if you want to become a ghoul again, select Ghoul Retransformation on the character screen. Bethesda lists that option at 1,000 Atoms in its release notes.

If the quest marker does not appear
Bethesda’s published instructions identify the level requirement, quest, and region but do not provide a verified troubleshooting sequence for a missing marker. Check that the relevant quest is being tracked, then consult current official Fallout 76 support if it still does not appear. No additional prerequisite is established in the cited instructions.
