To become a video game composer, build strong composition and audio-production skills, learn how music changes with gameplay, and make a portfolio that shows both musical quality and interactive thinking. There is no single required degree or first job: a short reel, a complete small-game score, collaborative projects, and reliable professional relationships can all help you build experience.
What a video game composer does
Game composition is more than writing a polished song or orchestral cue. Composers may create themes, short cues, loops, alternate sections, stems, and adaptive systems that respond to what the player is doing. They may also arrange, orchestrate, record, edit, produce electronically, implement music in middleware, and deliver assets to technical specifications. Berklee’s career guide describes this blend of musical and production work.
The exact mix depends on the project and team. A smaller production may ask one person to take on several audio tasks, while a larger team may divide composition, implementation, editing, and delivery among specialists.
Build the skills the work requires
Composition and production
Develop a broad foundation in composition, arranging, orchestration, and writing themes that can support characters, places, and changing situations. Practice across styles rather than assuming every game needs the same sound. Learn a digital audio workstation and audio-editing workflow, and get comfortable working with synthesizers and samplers; Berklee identifies these among the skills and tools relevant to the role.

Interactive music
Game music must often work as a system, not just as a fixed beginning-to-end track. Learn how layers can be added or removed as intensity changes, how alternate sections can be selected as the player moves between situations, and how loops, transitions, and stingers can make those changes feel musical. In a 2022 GDC session, composer Megan Carnes discusses horizontal and vertical composition, transition segments, stingers, and the difference between understanding these techniques and putting them into practice.
Make small prototypes that show a cue changing for a reason: danger rises, a location changes, or a moment of victory arrives. A linear track can demonstrate composition, but a playable or clearly explained example can also show that you understand the relationship between music and game state.

Make a portfolio before waiting for a commission
A focused reel is a practical starting point. Berklee recommends recording a short collection of cues to share with prospective employers; it does not prescribe a universal length or track count. Choose original pieces that show range and control, and make the context clear: what kind of scene or gameplay each cue serves, and whether it is a linear piece or part of an interactive design.
If possible, score a complete small game and include it alongside the reel. Berklee says a completed game with its corresponding soundtrack is more valuable than a reel alone because it demonstrates work in context. A small, finished project with clear scope is usually more useful as evidence than a large unfinished one.

Before taking on a collaboration, agree on scope, deadlines, credit, revision expectations, and whether you may show the work in your portfolio. Experience can be valuable, but that does not make every unpaid project worthwhile; make sure the terms are clear to everyone involved.
Find a first project and build experience
There is no fixed entry ladder. A GDC panel on starting a freelance game-audio career states that there is no clear-cut first step, and describes persistence and individual paths rather than a guaranteed route. You might begin with a small indie team, a student project, a game mod, or another collaborative project where you can deliver finished work and learn how a team operates.

Do not limit your search to large studios or big-budget games. Winifred Phillips’s career-entry article relays practitioner advice about gaining project experience and considering a range of game types, including indie and smaller projects. Its examples are advice from the time of publication, not evidence of which sectors currently have the most openings.
Composition may not be your only early route into game audio. Berklee notes that freelance composing, assistant work, sound design, and audio development can provide possible ways to earn income and build relevant experience. These are options, not assured jobs, and they may develop different skills; consider whether the work moves you closer to the music responsibilities you want.

Decide whether formal study fits your route
A music degree or specialist certificate is not established as a universal prerequisite. Berklee lists study options in composition, film and media scoring, game and interactive-media scoring, and sound design. The most direct evidence for a prospective collaborator or client is still work that shows you can compose and deliver music suited to a game.
When comparing a program with self-directed learning, look at:
- Whether the curriculum covers interactive composition and implementation, not only linear scoring.
- How much feedback you will receive and whether you will complete finished work.
- Access to game developers and other collaborators.
- Cost, schedule, and whether the resulting portfolio justifies the commitment.
Formal study can provide structure, feedback, and a community; independent study can offer flexibility and lower costs. Neither route guarantees employment, so judge each by the skills and demonstrable work it helps you produce. Check current course availability, costs, and terms directly with the institution.
Build relationships and plan for freelance realities
Musical skill is only part of collaborative work. Be clear in communication, take feedback professionally, meet agreed deadlines, and learn to handle revisions and technical delivery. Join relevant communities, share work where it is welcome, and make genuine connections with composers, audio professionals, and game developers. Berklee lists the Game Audio Network Guild and the International Game Developers Association as communities to explore; Phillips’s article also emphasizes relationships and adapting to a project’s needs. Such advice is useful, but networking is not a hiring formula.
Plan for a portfolio career, especially early on. Berklee describes many composers as independent contractors working from home studios, says in-house positions are rare, and notes that early-career composers may need additional income. That is qualitative career guidance, not a current workforce census or a promise about any individual’s prospects. No current, representative figure for game-composer pay, hiring rates, or time to a first job is established by the cited sources, so do not plan around an assumed salary or timeline.
Quick Recap
A practical starting sequence
- Strengthen the fundamentals. Practice composition, arranging, orchestration, style flexibility, and audio production.
- Study interactive design. Create examples using loops, layers, alternate sections, transitions, and stingers that respond to gameplay.
- Finish portfolio pieces. Assemble a short reel and, if possible, score a complete small game with agreed scope and credit.
- Collaborate on real projects. Seek teams where you can deliver finished work, learn the production process, and obtain permission to show your contribution.
- Develop professional habits and an income plan. Build relationships, deliver reliably, and consider adjacent audio work while continuing to pursue composition.
