Open the dedicated server console—usually the in-game F1 console, a hosting panel, telnet, or a web dashboard—and grant your account permission level 0 with admin add <identifier> 0. Replace <identifier> with your player name, online entity ID, SteamID64, or another platform ID accepted by the server. If you cannot reach a console, add the administrator through serveradmin.xml, the persistent file used for administrators and command permissions.

Choose the access method you actually have
Your route depends on how the server is installed and what your host exposes. A locally managed dedicated server normally gives you a console window or an in-game console. A rented server may provide a web panel, a file manager, telnet, or a browser-based command console instead. You do not have to be connected as a player when a panel executes a command as the server.

If a panel has both a command box and an administrator form, use the command box for a one-time change and the administrator form or file editor for a durable entry. Provider interfaces differ, so the labels and reload buttons will not be identical.
Run the admin command
1. Open a server-side console
Use F1 while connected when the installed build supports the in-game console. Otherwise open the provider’s server console, telnet interface, or web dashboard. The command must be processed by the server; typing it into ordinary player chat will not grant administrative access.

2. Supply an identifier
For an online player, the player name or entity ID can work. For an entry that survives name changes and is less likely to collide with another account, use a SteamID64 or the platform ID supported by your installation. A host panel may ask you to select the platform separately, so choose the platform that matches the account rather than selecting a generic or different one.
3. Grant the desired level
Enter admin add <identifier> 0, replacing the bracketed text with the identifier exactly as the server reports it. Level 0 is the maximum permission in the documented scale. If you are intentionally creating a restricted co-admin, replace 0 with a higher level.
4. Check the response
Look for a success message in the server console or panel and confirm that your account appears in the administrator list. Then run help, or another harmless command allowed at your assigned level, to verify that the new permission is active. If the panel has a separate administrator view, refresh it rather than assuming that a submitted form was saved.
Understand the permission scale before giving access to someone else
The documented scale runs from 0 to 1000. Lower numbers have more authority: level 0 is full or maximum administration, while level 1000 is the least authority and is the level used for an unlisted player. A higher number therefore does not mean “more admin.”

Some hosting panels display friendly labels such as “super admin,” “senior admin,” “admin,” or “moderator.” One panel guide associates those labels with levels 0, 1, 50, and 100, respectively, but those names and mappings are provider-specific. Treat the numeric level and the server’s command-permission settings as authoritative.

- Give a co-admin the least powerful level that lets them perform their job.
- Keep the administrator list limited to people you trust with world-management powers.
- Protect panel, telnet, and remote-console credentials separately from ordinary player passwords.
- Review the list after staff changes and remove accounts that no longer need access.
Find your SteamID64 or other platform ID
Use the online player listing
When you are connected, run the server’s player-ID listing command, commonly exposed through lpi or a similar player-information command on supported builds. Copy the ID exactly as shown. This avoids errors caused by punctuation, capitalization, or duplicate display names.
Read the server log
A server log often records a player’s platform identifier when they join. Use the host’s log viewer or download the relevant log, then match the identifier to your account and platform. This is useful when you cannot stay connected long enough to copy an in-game listing.
Use a platform profile lookup
A Steam profile lookup can reveal a SteamID64 when the profile is public or the lookup service can resolve the profile URL. Confirm that the result belongs to your account before entering it. A wrong but valid ID can grant administration to somebody else.
Match the crossplay platform
Crossplay installations may identify players through Steam, EOS/Epic, Xbox Live, or PlayStation accounts, depending on what the server build and host support. Select or enter the platform that actually authenticated your account. A correct number paired with the wrong platform can fail to resolve or can target a different identity.
Names and entity IDs are convenient for a player who is online, but they are less durable than a platform identifier. Names can change or collide; an ID tied to the account is the safer choice for a permanent administrator entry.

Become admin from a hosting panel
When the panel has a console box
- Sign in to the hosting panel and open the specific 7 Days to Die server.
- Open the server console, command console, or web-console tab. Do not use a chat widget intended only for messages to players.
- Confirm that the server has finished starting. A panel can accept text while the game process is still booting, but the command may be discarded or rejected.
- Send
admin add <identifier> 0with your SteamID64 or matching platform ID. - Wait for the command response, then refresh the administrator list or reconnect and test an allowed command.
Because the panel sends the command as the server, you normally do not need to be logged into the game. This is particularly useful when the server is private, full, or running on a machine you cannot physically access.
When the panel has an administrator form
Some providers expose fields for a player identifier, platform, and permission level instead of a raw command box. Enter the same stable identifier, select the matching platform, choose level 0 only if you need full control, and save. Follow the panel’s own reload or restart instruction if it says that the game process must be restarted before the entry is active.
When the panel exposes only files
Use the file manager to locate serveradmin.xml and follow the file procedure below. Make a backup before changing it, because a malformed edit can prevent the server from loading its administrator list.
Edit serveradmin.xml when console access is unavailable
serveradmin.xml is the persistent file that stores administrators and command permissions. The exact editor, path, save button, and reload behavior vary by provider, so do not assume that a change in a local copy has reached the live server.

- Stop the server if your host requires it for configuration edits. If the provider supports safe live editing, follow its stated procedure instead.
- Use the host’s file manager, FTP access, or local filesystem to locate
serveradmin.xml. - Download or duplicate the file before editing it. Keep the backup outside the live configuration directory so the server does not load it as an additional configuration.
- Open the file in a plain-text editor and add your platform identifier to the administrator entry using the file’s existing structure. Set the permission level to
0for full access, or use the restricted level you selected. - Preserve the file’s existing XML structure, quotation marks, and closing tags. Do not paste formatted text from a word processor.
- Save the file to the server, confirm that the timestamp changed, and start or reload the server using the provider’s documented control.
- Connect after the reload and verify the entry with the administrator list or an allowed command.
If the server starts but your access disappears after the next restart, the host may be regenerating the file from a panel database, the edit may have been made in the wrong instance, or the file may not have been saved. Check the live file after startup and use the provider’s administrator form when one is available.

Remove or reduce administrator access
To remove an administrator through a server console, use admin remove <identifier> with the same identifier format used when the account was added. If you want to keep the person listed but limit what they can do, change the account’s permission level through the server’s command-permission controls or the host’s administrator editor. After either change, verify the list and test from the affected account.
When an employee or co-admin loses access, remove both their in-game administrator entry and any panel or remote-console credentials they knew. Changing only one layer can leave a path back into the server.

“Command not found” or “permission denied”
- Make sure the text was sent to the server console, not ordinary chat.
- Check that the account issuing the command already has permission to administer users. A regular player cannot promote themselves merely by typing an admin command.
- Run
helpon the installed build to confirm that the command name and syntax are available there. - If you are using a panel, verify that you opened the server’s command console rather than a log-only or chat-only window.
The name does not resolve
Use the online entity ID, SteamID64, or another platform ID instead of a display name. Check every digit and avoid copying extra spaces. If the player is offline, a name may not be resolvable at all; a durable platform ID is the better choice.

Confirm that the change was written to serveradmin.xml or to the provider’s persistent administrator database. Some panels apply a temporary runtime change unless you press a separate save button. Follow the host’s reload or restart procedure, then inspect the live administrator list after startup.
Crossplay account is rejected
Check the account’s platform and the panel’s platform selector. Steam, EOS/Epic, Xbox Live, and PlayStation identities are not interchangeable. Use the identifier generated by the same platform through which the server authenticated you, and confirm that the host supports that platform for administration.

The syntax differs on your build
Commands can change between server versions or installations. Use the local help output as the authority for that running build. If the command shown there differs from the documented form, follow the server’s own syntax rather than repeatedly submitting an older example.
The server is still starting
Wait until the console reports that the world is ready and the panel shows the process as online. A command sent during startup may be ignored, applied to a temporary process, or return an unhelpful error. Submit it again once the server is ready, then verify the resulting administrator entry.

The documented command set includes administrative controls such as:
admin removeto revoke an administrator entry.kickto disconnect a player.banto block a player according to the server’s ban controls.saveworldto request a world save.shutdownto stop the server.
Availability and required permission depend on the installed build and the server’s command-permission settings. Run help before using a command you have not tested, especially on a live world. Treat shutdown, bans, and permission changes as high-impact operations and check the target identifier before submitting them.
A safe first-admin checklist
- Identify the server instance and confirm that you are editing or commanding the live one.
- Choose a stable SteamID64 or matching platform ID whenever possible.
- Use the server console, not player chat.
- Grant level 0 only to an account that needs unrestricted control.
- Record which identifier and platform you entered.
- Verify with the administrator list and a harmless permitted command.
- Back up
serveradmin.xmlbefore file edits. - Confirm persistence by checking the entry after the host’s required reload or restart.
- Remove old administrators and rotate remote-console credentials when staff changes.
- Use the running build’s
helpoutput whenever syntax or command availability is uncertain.
What to do when you still cannot promote yourself
If every console route rejects the command and you cannot edit serveradmin.xml, contact the server owner or hosting provider with the server identifier, your exact platform, and the identifier you want added. Ask for confirmation that the change was made on the correct instance and that the provider supports your platform. Do not send a panel password or remote-console credential in a public support ticket.
Once the entry is accepted and survives a restart, your account is an administrator at the selected level. Keep the identifier and the assigned level documented so a future migration, panel reset, or staff change can be handled without guessing.
