How to Become OP on a Minecraft Bedrock Server

Grant operator status on Minecraft Bedrock with /op or op in the Dedicated Server console. This guide explains authority, permissions, cheats, defaults, revocation and fixes.

If you own or administer a Minecraft Bedrock world or server, grant operator status with /op <player>. On a Bedrock Dedicated Server console, enter op <playername> without the leading slash. The command is an administrator action, so an ordinary player cannot legitimately use it to promote themselves. To remove the privilege later, use /deop <playername>.

What OP means on Bedrock

OP is shorthand for operator. An operator is a player trusted to use administrative commands rather than only ordinary gameplay permissions. On Bedrock, the official /op command grants operator status to a named player or to a valid target selector. Its documented permission level is Admin, which means the command must be issued from an authorized administrative context.

Operator status is separate from being the world owner in a social sense. A host or server administrator can decide which players receive it, and that grant can be revoked without removing the player from the world. Giving someone OP should therefore be treated as giving them control over administrative commands, not as a cosmetic rank.

The direct commands

Where you enter it Grant operator status Revoke operator status
In-game Bedrock chat /op <player> /deop <player>
Bedrock Dedicated Server console op <playername> deop <playername>

Replace the placeholder with the player’s exact in-game name. In chat, keep the leading slash. The dedicated-server console normally expects the command without that slash. The command itself does not require cheats, but it does require the authority to administer the world or server.

Before you try: authority and permissions

You must be the host or an authorized administrator

A regular player cannot legitimately self-promote by typing /op. If you are playing on someone else’s world or server, ask the owner or an existing administrator to grant you the permission. If the command is rejected, that rejection is usually an authority problem rather than a spelling problem.

Local worlds use the player-permissions interface

In an in-game world, the host or an already authorized operator opens the player-permissions interface, selects the player, and enables the operator commands permission. The exact surrounding menu can vary between Bedrock releases and platforms, but the permission label is the important setting. A player who is merely present in the world cannot change another player’s permission level.

Dedicated servers have a console and configuration defaults

On a Bedrock Dedicated Server, the running server console is an administrative control surface. Enter op <playername> there to grant a targeted player operator privileges. The file setting default-player-permission-level controls the starting level for new players; it is not a replacement for targeted promotion with /op.

Grant OP in an in-game Bedrock world

  1. Join the world as its host or an authorized operator. If you do not own the world and have not been granted administrative permission, stop here and contact the owner.
  2. Open the player-permissions interface. Use the world’s player-management or permissions screen, then locate the account that should receive access.
  3. Select the player. Confirm the name carefully, especially if several players have similar names.
  4. Enable operator commands. This is the permission that allows the selected player to use operator commands in chat and access command blocks where applicable.
  5. Save or apply the change if the interface presents an explicit button. Some versions apply a selection immediately; others require confirmation.
  6. Have the player test an appropriate operator command. Test with a harmless command and verify that the command is accepted. Do not use destructive commands merely to check access.
  7. Record who received access and why. A short note helps the host undo temporary permissions later.

If commands are unavailable in the world even after the permission is enabled, inspect the world’s cheats setting. Microsoft’s Bedrock guidance says cheats must be enabled before commands can generally be used in a world. Enabling cheats disables achievements for that world, so the host should make that trade-off deliberately rather than turning the setting on as a blind troubleshooting step.

Grant OP from a Bedrock Dedicated Server console

  1. Start or connect to the Bedrock Dedicated Server. Use the console attached to the running server process, not a player’s ordinary chat window.
  2. Enter the exact player name: op <playername>. Do not add the chat slash when entering a command directly in the server console.
  3. Wait for the console response. A successful administrative command should produce a confirmation or status message. If the server reports that the player is unknown, check spelling, capitalization, spaces, and whether that account is currently recognized by the server.
  4. Ask the player to reconnect or test a harmless operator command if necessary. This confirms that the permission reached the intended account rather than another similarly named player.
  5. Remove the privilege when it is no longer needed: deop <playername>.

The console route is useful when chat permissions are misconfigured, when the owner is managing a remote server, or when no trusted operator is currently online. It also provides a clear separation between server administration and player communication.

Using selectors and exact names safely

The command target can be a player name or a valid target selector. A name is the safer choice when you intend to promote one specific person. Copy the name exactly as Bedrock displays it and check for punctuation, spaces, and similar-looking accounts.

Selectors can address groups or the nearest matching entity, depending on the selector used and the command context. Because OP is a high-impact permission, broad selectors deserve extra caution. If your intent is one player, do not use a group-wide selector simply to avoid typing the name. Verify the target before pressing Enter and keep a record of the command used.

OP, operator commands, cheats, and achievements

What the /op command requires

The /op command itself does not require cheats according to the official Bedrock command reference. It still requires an authorized administrator context. “Cheats are not required” does not mean every player can run it; it means the command’s own definition does not depend on the world-cheats switch when the caller already has the necessary authority.

What ordinary world commands require

For general command use in an in-game world, the host may need to enable cheats. Bedrock’s commands guidance also identifies the operator commands permission as the setting that enables commands in chat and access to command blocks. These are separate checks: the world’s cheats setting governs command availability generally, while the player permission determines whether a particular account can use operator commands.

The achievement consequence

Enabling cheats disables achievements for that world. If achievements matter, discuss the consequence with every player before changing the setting. Do not enable cheats merely because a player has not yet been assigned operator commands; first verify the player-permissions setting and the caller’s authority.

Dedicated-server defaults versus targeted promotion

The Bedrock Dedicated Server server.properties file includes default-player-permission-level. Microsoft documents three allowed values:

Value Meaning in the default setting When it applies
visitor New players begin with visitor-level access. Future players who do not receive another targeted grant.
member New players begin with member-level access. The documented default value.
operator New players begin with operator-level access. Future players; it is a broad administrative policy.

This property controls the starting level for new players. It does not function like a one-player /op command, and changing it can affect everyone who joins under that policy. For a single named player, use op <playername> in the console or the equivalent authorized in-game action.

Before changing a default, decide whether the change should affect only future arrivals or whether existing players also need individual adjustments. A broad default is convenient for a private server with a trusted group, but it gives more access than necessary on a public or mixed-trust server.

The dedicated-server /permission command

Bedrock Dedicated Server also provides the dedicated-server-only /permission command for owner-level permission administration. Microsoft documents /permission list for listing current permissions and /permission reload for reloading the permissions file from disk.

Use these subcommands for inspection and permission-file maintenance. They are not the shortest route for promoting one player: /op <playername> remains the direct targeted grant, while deop <playername> directly revokes it. Because /permission is owner-level, a player who can use ordinary operator commands may still lack authority to perform owner-level permission administration.

How to remove OP and recover from a mistaken grant

  1. Identify the exact account. Confirm which player received the privilege; similarly named accounts are an easy source of mistakes.
  2. Use the matching control surface. In chat, an authorized administrator can enter /deop <playername>. In the dedicated console, enter deop <playername>.
  3. Recheck the player’s permission. Have the player reconnect or test a harmless command, or inspect the server’s permission information where available.
  4. Review defaults if the access returns. On a dedicated server, check whether default-player-permission-level is set to operator. A broad default can explain why new players receive more access than expected.
  5. Change the local-world permission when applicable. If the grant came from the player-permissions interface, disable operator commands for that account there as well.

If the original administrator account is unavailable, recovery depends on who controls the world or server process. A normal player cannot bypass that ownership boundary through a Bedrock command. The practical solution is to contact the owner or the person who manages the dedicated-server console and ask them to revoke or restore permissions.

Troubleshooting when /op does not work

“You do not have permission” or no command access

  • Confirm that you are the world host, an existing operator, or the person authorized to administer the dedicated server.
  • In a local world, open the player-permissions interface and verify that your account has operator commands.
  • On a dedicated server, use the server console rather than attempting the command from an ordinary player account.
  • Check that you are not confusing member or visitor status with operator status.

The player cannot use commands after being promoted

  • Verify the target name and make sure the grant was applied to the intended account.
  • Ask the player to reconnect or retest after the permission change.
  • In a local world, confirm that operator commands is enabled for that player, not merely that the player is listed in the world.
  • Check the world’s cheats setting if general commands remain unavailable. Remember that enabling it disables achievements for the world.
  • On a dedicated server, inspect the console response and use the server’s permission inspection tools where appropriate.

The server says the player is unknown

  • Use the exact in-game name, including capitalization and punctuation.
  • Make sure you are connected to the intended server instance.
  • Check whether the player has joined under a different account name.
  • Avoid replacing a one-player name with a broad selector until you understand exactly which accounts it will match.

The command works in chat but not in the console

Remove the leading slash in the dedicated-server console. Use op <playername>, not the chat form /op <player>. The reverse applies when entering the command in chat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Commands worked yesterday but not today

  • Check whether another administrator used deop or changed the player-permissions setting.
  • Review default-player-permission-level if the issue affects newly joining players rather than one existing account.
  • If a permissions file was edited, an owner can use /permission reload on a dedicated server to reload it from disk.
  • Confirm that you are managing the same world or server process where the grant was made.

Choosing the right administration route

Situation Best route Reason
You need to promote one named player on a dedicated server. op <playername> in the server console. Direct, targeted, and independent of player chat permissions.
You host a local world and the player is online. Player-permissions interface; enable operator commands. It provides a visual per-player control.
You need to revoke one player’s access. /deop <player> in chat or deop <playername> in the console. It reverses a targeted operator grant.
You are setting the starting level for future dedicated-server players. default-player-permission-level in server.properties. It defines the default policy rather than one individual grant.
You need to inspect or reload dedicated-server permission data. /permission list or /permission reload. These are owner-level administration tools for the permissions file.

Security practices for OP access

  • Grant the smallest scope necessary. If someone only needs to build, do not grant operator status.
  • Use named grants instead of broad selectors. A one-player command is easier to audit and undo.
  • Keep a change log. Record the player, date, reason, and whether the grant is temporary.
  • Remove temporary access promptly. Use deop when an event, moderation task, or troubleshooting session ends.
  • Protect the server console. Anyone with access to the running console can perform administrative actions outside normal player chat.
  • Discuss achievement impact before enabling cheats. The permission decision and the cheats decision are related to command use but are not the same setting.
  • Review defaults periodically. A default of operator can silently give elevated access to future players, while the documented default is member.

Examples you can copy

Promote one player from Bedrock chat

/op AlexBuilder

Use this only when the person entering the command is already authorized to administer the world or server.

Promote one player from the Dedicated Server console

op AlexBuilder

The console form omits the slash.

Revoke the same player in chat

/deop AlexBuilder

Revoke the same player from the Dedicated Server console

deop AlexBuilder

Inspect or reload dedicated-server permissions

/permission list
/permission reload

These are owner-level dedicated-server administration commands, not substitutes for the targeted op and deop commands.

Quick checklist

  • You control the world or have explicit administrative authority.
  • You chose the correct route: in-game permissions for a local world, or the running console for a Dedicated Server.
  • You entered the exact player name.
  • You used the slash in chat and omitted it in the server console.
  • You enabled operator commands for the intended player in a local world.
  • You checked the cheats setting only when general command use requires it, understanding that enabling cheats disables achievements.
  • You know how to reverse the change with /deop or deop.
  • You did not confuse the new-player default in server.properties with a targeted operator grant.
