The reliable pattern is simple: run Pi-hole on a machine reachable through your OpenVPN tunnel, make Pi-hole listen on that tunnel interface, and push Pi-hole’s tunnel-side address to every VPN client. In the OpenVPN server configuration, use a line such as push "dhcp-option DNS 10.8.0.1"—replacing 10.8.0.1 with your Pi-hole address on the VPN. Reconnect clients, confirm that address is their DNS server, and remove any unrelated secondary DNS that could bypass filtering.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
Do not push 127.0.0.1. That address means “this device,” not “the Pi-hole host,” and clients can fall back to another resolver. The same verification matters for a gaming PC, console-supporting network, phone, or any other device using the tunnel.

What this setup does
DNS is the lookup step that turns a hostname into an IP address. When a game, launcher, web page, or advertising component asks for a domain, the device normally sends that DNS request to the resolver supplied by its network. Pi-hole can answer those requests locally and refuse domains present on its blocklists. OpenVPN supplies the private path that lets remote clients use that Pi-hole instance while they are connected.
The two systems have different jobs:
- Pi-hole receives DNS queries and applies its lists and settings.
- OpenVPN authenticates clients and carries their traffic through the VPN tunnel.
- The OpenVPN push directive tells clients which DNS server to use after they connect.
This is not a browser extension. It works at the resolver level for devices that actually accept the VPN-provided DNS setting. It also is not an absolute guarantee that every advert will disappear: a device or application can use another resolver, retain an old setting, or obtain content from the same domain as the content you want. The useful goal is to make Pi-hole the resolver for the traffic that follows your VPN configuration and to detect clients that do not honor it.

Plan the network before installing anything
Pi-hole must be on a host that the VPN clients can reach. Guides commonly place it in a Docker container, a virtual machine, or on dedicated hardware. The exact choice affects how you expose port 53 and how you restart services, but the OpenVPN configuration still needs the Pi-hole address as seen from the tunnel.
| Item | What to decide | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pi-hole host | Docker, VM, or hardware on a network reachable from OpenVPN | Clients cannot use a resolver they cannot route to. |
| VPN-side address | The Pi-hole IP reachable through the tunnel, for example 10.8.0.1 |
This is the address that belongs in the pushed DNS option. |
| Listening interfaces | Pi-hole must accept queries arriving through the VPN interface | Listening only on a local LAN interface leaves tunnel clients unanswered. |
| Secondary DNS | Blank, or the same Pi-hole address | A different resolver can answer blocked domains and bypass filtering. |
| Client behavior | How each operating system applies pushed DNS options | Windows and some other clients may require additional configuration. |
Keep the tunnel address distinct from the Pi-hole machine’s loopback address. A client’s 127.0.0.1 always refers to that client itself. If the Pi-hole host uses several interfaces, write down which address is actually reachable from the OpenVPN network before editing the server configuration.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Install Pi-hole on a reachable host
Install Pi-hole using the current official method for your chosen platform. The available deployment patterns include Docker, a VM, and physical hardware. Installation commands and supported versions change, so follow the current Pi-hole instructions for the operating system or container image you selected rather than copying an old one-line installer from an unrelated guide.
During setup, note the administrative URL, the interface choices, and the address assigned to the service. The important result is not a particular installation format; it is a Pi-hole process that can receive DNS queries on the VPN-facing network and has a stable address. If the address changes, the pushed OpenVPN option will point at the wrong machine.
Check reachability first
Before changing OpenVPN, establish that the VPN network can route to the Pi-hole host. A client connected to the tunnel should be able to reach the selected tunnel-side address. If the host is behind a container or VM network, its networking mode and firewall must allow DNS traffic from the VPN subnet. A successful Pi-hole web interface on the local LAN does not by itself prove that tunnel clients can reach port 53.
Make Pi-hole listen on the VPN side
Pi-hole’s interface binding must include the interface through which OpenVPN clients arrive. PiVPN documentation describes the command:

pihole -a -i local
This setting makes Pi-hole listen on all interfaces, including the VPN-facing one. Run it on the Pi-hole host, then confirm that the service remains running and that your deployment has not replaced the setting during a container restart or package update.
Listening on all interfaces is convenient for a small, trusted network, but it increases the number of networks that can send DNS queries to Pi-hole. Restrict access with your host, container, or network firewall where appropriate. The critical functional test is that the OpenVPN subnet can reach Pi-hole while untrusted networks cannot use it as an open resolver.
Push Pi-hole’s address from OpenVPN
Open the server configuration used by your OpenVPN instance. Remove or comment out existing push "dhcp-option DNS ..." entries that point to unrelated resolvers. Add a directive for the Pi-hole address as seen through the tunnel:
push "dhcp-option DNS 10.8.0.1"
Replace 10.8.0.1 with your actual Pi-hole VPN address. A forum reply summarized the requirement this way: the server configuration should push the tunnel-range address, such as 10.8.0.1, for DNS to work. The address is an example, not a universal default; use the value from your own VPN topology.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen you have more than one DNS server
OpenVPN’s community documentation describes one push line per DNS server. Write separate directives rather than placing multiple addresses in one option:
push "dhcp-option DNS 10.8.0.1"
push "dhcp-option DNS 10.8.0.1"
Those two lines intentionally name the same Pi-hole address and are not normally useful as a pair; they illustrate the syntax. If you genuinely operate two DNS servers, use one line for each distinct address. Do not add a public or router resolver merely as a convenience. An OpenVPN issue report notes that OpenVPN 2.4 rejected a second IP that an older 2.3 release silently ignored, so keeping each address on its own directive also avoids version-dependent parsing.

Never use this as the client-facing value:
push "dhcp-option DNS 127.0.0.1"
That sends loopback to the remote device. On Android, a Pi-hole forum report described fallback to Google DNS when loopback was pushed. Even when a particular client appears to work, loopback does not identify the Pi-hole host and should not be used for this design.
Restart OpenVPN and reconnect every client
Save the server configuration and restart the OpenVPN server using the service manager and unit name used by your operating system or package. There is no single restart command that applies to every OpenVPN installation; some systems use a named server instance, while others use a different service layout. Read the service status after restarting and correct any configuration error before disconnecting users.
- Stop or reload the OpenVPN server according to your deployment’s documented service procedure.
- Confirm that the server starts without a configuration error.
- Disconnect each client so it receives the new pushed options.
- Reconnect the client and wait for the tunnel to report as established.
- Check the client’s active DNS servers rather than relying on the VPN icon alone.
Existing sessions can retain the old resolver until they renegotiate or reconnect. Testing only one device is insufficient because operating systems and OpenVPN clients apply pushed options differently.
Verify that Pi-hole is actually being used
Verification should answer two separate questions: did the client receive Pi-hole’s address, and are DNS queries reaching Pi-hole?
Client-side check
Inspect the active adapter or connection details after reconnecting. The DNS server list should contain the Pi-hole VPN address, such as 10.8.0.1. If it still shows your home router, an internet provider resolver, a public resolver, or only the client’s own loopback address, the push did not take effect or another setting took precedence.
Pi-hole-side check
Use Pi-hole’s query log or dashboard while the client performs a fresh lookup. A query from the VPN client should appear with the expected source and should be evaluated by the configured lists. If the client reports Pi-hole but no query arrives, check routing, firewall rules, container port exposure, and whether the client is using a separate encrypted DNS mechanism outside the OpenVPN-provided resolver.

Test more than a browser
Check the operating system resolver and at least one application that matters to you. A browser can have its own secure-DNS setting, while a game launcher or another application may use the system resolver. The purpose of the test is to identify which traffic follows the VPN DNS setting; do not infer that every application behaves identically from a single web-page result.
Prevent DNS bypass through secondary resolvers
A frequent configuration mistake is leaving a different secondary DNS server configured on the client or network adapter. If Pi-hole is unavailable for a moment, some systems send queries to that alternate resolver. For blocked domains, that means the request can succeed without ever reaching Pi-hole.
For a strict Pi-hole setup, leave the secondary DNS field empty when the client permits that, or set it to the same Pi-hole address. Do not list an unrelated resolver as a “backup” unless you accept that it can bypass filtering. Check both the VPN profile and the underlying physical adapter: a Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter may retain static DNS values that compete with the pushed option.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting by symptom
The client connects, but ads are not blocked
- Confirm the client’s active DNS server is the Pi-hole VPN address, not a public resolver or
127.0.0.1. - Look for a second DNS entry on the adapter or in the VPN profile and remove it or change it to Pi-hole.
- Check Pi-hole’s query log while reproducing the problem. No query means the client is not using Pi-hole or cannot reach it.
- Make sure the relevant domain is actually represented in the active blocklists. DNS filtering cannot block a name Pi-hole is not configured to refuse.
Pi-hole receives no queries from VPN clients
- Verify that the pushed address is the Pi-hole address reachable from the tunnel, not a LAN-only address and not loopback.
- Run
pihole -a -i localon the Pi-hole host if it is not listening on the VPN-facing interface. - Check routing between the OpenVPN subnet and the Pi-hole host, especially when Pi-hole runs in a VM or container.
- Check whether a firewall or container network is blocking DNS traffic on port 53.
Pi-hole fails to start because port 53 is occupied
On Ubuntu or Debian, systemd-resolved can already be bound to port 53. If Pi-hole reports that the port is unavailable, inspect which process owns port 53 and follow the current Pi-hole and operating-system guidance for changing the resolver arrangement. Do not blindly disable a system service without understanding how the host will resolve its own names. After resolving the conflict, restart Pi-hole and repeat the VPN-client test.
Windows does not apply the pushed DNS setting
A Windows 10 user reported that the pushed value did not apply automatically and had to be entered on the VPN adapter manually. Treat this as a client-configuration problem, not proof that the server directive is wrong:
- Connect the Windows client to OpenVPN.
- Open the network adapter’s IPv4 DNS settings.
- Check whether the Pi-hole VPN address is present.
- If it is absent, add the Pi-hole address to the adapter used by the VPN and remove unrelated secondary resolvers.
- Reconnect and verify the resulting DNS list again.
The exact Windows labels can vary by edition and VPN client, so record which adapter the OpenVPN software creates before editing settings.

Android falls back to another resolver
First check that the profile does not push 127.0.0.1. That value has been associated with Android falling back to Google DNS in a Pi-hole forum report. Then inspect Android’s VPN and private-DNS settings for an override, reconnect the tunnel, and confirm that the Pi-hole address is active. If Android still bypasses the pushed resolver, capture the client’s DNS details and compare them with the server configuration rather than adding more DNS addresses at random.
Another non-Windows client ignores the option
OpenVPN’s community documentation notes that non-Windows clients may need a client-side script to parse pushed options. If your client does not automatically install the supplied DNS server, use the client’s documented option-processing mechanism or script support. The script must apply the pushed value to the operating system’s resolver and restore the previous setting when the tunnel closes. Test connect and disconnect behavior so the device does not remain pointed at an unreachable Pi-hole address after the VPN ends.

Gaming-network considerations
DNS filtering is most useful when the gaming device or its supporting devices actually use the OpenVPN tunnel. A console on the home network will not automatically inherit a VPN server’s pushed DNS option unless the console itself runs a compatible VPN client or uses a router or gateway that terminates the tunnel and advertises Pi-hole to the console. A gaming PC with the OpenVPN client can receive the option directly, but its launcher, browser, and operating system may still have separate resolver settings.
Keep the first troubleshooting pass narrow: connect one test device, verify its DNS list, watch Pi-hole’s query log, and only then add other devices. This prevents a router-wide change from hiding which client is bypassing Pi-hole. If a game stops connecting after a blocklist change, identify the blocked domain in Pi-hole’s log and allow it only if it is required for the game’s login, matchmaking, telemetry, or update process. DNS-level blocking can affect legitimate services when they share infrastructure with advertising or tracking domains.
Operational checklist
- Pi-hole is installed on a host reachable from the OpenVPN network.
- The Pi-hole host has a stable address for the VPN path.
pihole -a -i localhas been applied when tunnel-side listening is needed.- The OpenVPN server pushes the Pi-hole VPN address, not
127.0.0.1. - Each DNS server, if more than one is intentionally used, has its own
push "dhcp-option DNS ..."line. - OpenVPN has been restarted or reloaded successfully.
- Every client has disconnected and reconnected after the change.
- The active DNS list on each client shows Pi-hole.
- Pi-hole’s query log shows traffic from the VPN client.
- Unrelated secondary DNS values have been removed.
- Port 53 is free for Pi-hole, including on Ubuntu or Debian systems using
systemd-resolved. - Windows and Android have been checked separately instead of assumed to behave like another client.
What success looks like
A correct deployment has a clear chain: OpenVPN authenticates the device, the tunnel routes it to Pi-hole’s VPN-side address, Pi-hole is listening on that interface, and the client’s resolver list contains no competing address. The dashboard or query log then shows the client’s DNS requests, and blocked names receive Pi-hole’s configured response. When one link fails, the client’s reported DNS server and Pi-hole’s query log usually reveal whether the problem is a push, a route, an interface binding, a port conflict, or a bypassing secondary resolver.
Use the tunnel address consistently, test every operating system you intend to support, and treat DNS verification as part of the setup rather than an optional final check. That approach gives Pi-hole a real chance to filter DNS traffic without assuming that an established VPN tunnel automatically changed every application’s resolver.
