Keep your browser’s phishing and deceptive-site protections enabled, and treat any wallet prompt you did not trigger as suspicious. Never enter your Secret Recovery Phrase on a website or into an unsolicited prompt. Before downloading a wallet, connecting to a crypto game, or signing a transaction, verify the exact site through an official project source. Browser and wallet warnings can help, but they cannot guarantee that every scam will be caught.

What to do when a crypto wallet pop-up appears unexpectedly

If a MetaMask prompt appears just because you opened a site, or appears without an action you initiated in a connected decentralized application, close the prompt and the site. Do not connect your wallet or sign. MetaMask’s Help Center says, “MetaMask will never pop up without you initiating a transaction.” That is MetaMask’s guidance about its own extension, not a guarantee covering every wallet or browser.

This matters on gaming sites as well as other crypto-connected pages. A fake game, token, giveaway, or mint page can imitate a legitimate wallet interface and try to get you to connect, approve an action, or disclose credentials. A familiar logo or polished design does not prove that a page is genuine.

  • Never type your Secret Recovery Phrase into a website, support form, or unexpected prompt. MetaMask says legitimate MetaMask sites and non-malicious decentralized applications will not ask for it.
  • Do not sign a request you cannot explain. Read what the wallet says the transaction will do; if the request is unclear or the site is unexpected, stop.
  • Verify the domain before continuing. Reach the project through a source you already trust, then check that the address and wallet extension match its official instructions.

Do not try to determine whether a surprise prompt is genuine by clicking through it. The fact that a wallet window is visible does not establish that the page that triggered it is trustworthy. Close the page or prompt, then independently navigate to the project’s official source if you still need to use the service. If you cannot establish the correct domain or explain why a transaction is being requested, do not proceed.

How to enable built-in protection in Chrome and Firefox

These instructions refer to desktop browser settings. Labels and menus can move between releases, and a work or school administrator may manage settings on a device. Chrome and Firefox both describe built-in protections against unsafe sites, but their settings and warning behavior are not a head-to-head measure of which browser is safer.

Browser Protection and default What to check What the protection does
Google Chrome Safe Browsing is on by default; Google advises against turning it off. Settings → Privacy and security → Security. Confirm Safe Browsing is enabled. Enhanced Safe Browsing is an available option. Warns about unsafe sites and downloads. Enhanced Safe Browsing provides real-time warnings about known and new unsafe sites.
Mozilla Firefox Dangerous and deceptive-content protections are on by default unless settings have been changed. Settings → Privacy & Security. In the Security / Connection and software security area, check the dangerous-content, dangerous-download, and unwanted-software warning controls. Warns about suspicious sites and blocks detected harmful downloads; warning controls also cover unwanted or uncommon software.

These controls do different jobs: a warning can tell you that a site or download has been identified as risky, while Firefox also describes blocking a harmful download. Chrome’s Enhanced Safe Browsing adds real-time warnings about known and new unsafe sites. Neither browser promises to identify every new scam, and these protections do not make it safe to ignore a warning or reveal wallet credentials.

Chrome: check Safe Browsing

  1. Open Chrome and select Settings.
  2. Choose Privacy and security, then Security.
  3. Confirm that Safe Browsing is enabled. Google documents phishing and malware detection as on by default and says it does not recommend turning the feature off.
  4. If you want real-time warnings about known and new unsafe sites, consider enabling Enhanced Safe Browsing. On a managed work or school device, an administrator may control this setting.

If Chrome displays a red “Dangerous site” warning, leave the site rather than treating the warning as a routine obstacle to click through. Google describes the risks covered by Chrome’s warnings as including phishing, social engineering, malware, unwanted software, and deceptive look-alike URLs. A page using a near-match domain may be dangerous even if its design resembles the real project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google says Chrome’s Safe Browsing lists cover threats such as phishing, malware, abusive extensions, malicious and intrusive ads, and social engineering. That broad coverage is useful, but it is not a guarantee that every harmful page or extension has already been identified. If Chrome does not show a warning, that absence alone is not verification that a crypto page is legitimate. Check the destination and the action separately.

Google’s guidance is direct: “We do not recommend turning off Safe Browsing.” If a warning appears while you are trying to reach a wallet, exchange, game, or token page, treat it as a reason to stop and verify the address through an official source rather than as a routine browser inconvenience.

Firefox: check dangerous-content and download warnings

  1. Open Firefox Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & Security and find the Security or Connection and software security area. Exact section names can shift between versions.
  3. Confirm that Block dangerous and deceptive content is checked, along with the relevant controls for dangerous downloads and warnings about unwanted or uncommon software.

Mozilla describes Firefox’s site protection as checking visited sites against lists of reported phishing, unwanted-software, and malware sites. Mozilla says those lists are updated about every 30 minutes while the feature is enabled. That is a description of the list-update mechanism, not a promise that every newly created or changed link will be identified immediately.

Keep the download and unwanted-software warnings in view as well as the site-blocking control. A suspicious link can lead to a page, but it can also lead to a download that is itself harmful. Mozilla says Firefox warns when a suspicious site is entered and blocks a detected harmful download. Those controls are complementary: a site warning does not tell you that a wallet extension is authentic, and a download warning does not replace checking its official source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the Firefox settings appear unchecked, turn on the relevant protections rather than assuming the browser will warn you. If the controls are unavailable or managed, the browser may be governed by an organization’s settings. Browser menus can change, so use the current Settings labels visible in your version rather than relying on an older screenshot or guide.

Why the ordinary pop-up blocker is not enough

A browser’s ordinary pop-up control is intended to reduce unsolicited website windows. It is not the same thing as phishing protection, and it should not be treated as a crypto-wallet security setting. The main danger may be a deceptive page, a malicious extension, or a fake wallet interface embedded in a page—not a separate window that the ordinary blocker can reliably stop.

Use the browser’s unsafe-site protections, but do not expect one toggle to block every wallet prompt or suspicious link. A page may still try to persuade you to reveal a phrase, connect a wallet, or sign. Those decisions require checking the source and request, not just changing the browser’s pop-up setting.

Blocking a window can reduce nuisance prompts, but it does not prove that the page underneath is safe. A fake wallet panel can be presented as part of a page, or a malicious extension can imitate a legitimate wallet. Conversely, a legitimate wallet prompt that follows an action you deliberately initiated is not necessarily an unsolicited website pop-up. Focus on why the prompt appeared, what it asks you to do, and whether you trust the exact site and extension.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single browser setting that can safely be described as “block all crypto wallet pop-ups.” Keep both the browser’s deceptive-site controls and your own verification steps in place. If your goal is to stop a specific unexpected prompt, close the page instead of trying to fix it by lowering security settings or repeatedly clicking through.

How to tell whether a wallet warning or prompt is real

Use the action that caused it as a signal

A wallet request should make sense in the context of something you deliberately did. If a MetaMask prompt appears on entering a site or at random, MetaMask says that is likely a scam. Close it instead of testing it by connecting or signing.

Ask yourself what you just did. Did you deliberately choose an action on a site that should require a wallet response, or did a prompt appear simply after opening a page? MetaMask’s guidance is specific to its extension: a genuine MetaMask response follows a transaction action initiated by the user. Do not generalize that sentence into a promise about all wallet software, and do not assume an unexpected request becomes safe because it carries familiar branding.

Do not trust a page because it looks familiar

Scams can imitate wallet interfaces and prompts. Check the exact domain against the project’s official source, and verify the extension publisher through an official browser extension store. MetaMask directs users to install through its official download page or an official browser extension store. Do not use a download button reached through an unsolicited message or an unfamiliar search result as proof of authenticity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a wallet download, start from the wallet’s own official download page or the official extension store, not a link in an unsolicited message. Confirm the extension publisher matches the wallet’s official instructions. For a project or game, independently reach its official project source and check the precise address before connecting. Similar-looking names and page design are not enough to establish that a domain is genuine.

Use the same care with a contract address or a transaction destination. If a wallet warning is less definitive than “Malicious,” verify the URL and contract address through the project’s official channels before taking action. Do not treat a social post, a reply in a support thread, or the page currently asking for a signature as independent proof of its own legitimacy.

Separate browser warnings from wallet alerts

Chrome Safe Browsing and Firefox’s protections assess unsafe sites or downloads. MetaMask security alerts provide wallet-related trust and transaction-risk signals. These are different layers: one does not replace the other. MetaMask says its alerts are enabled by default in Extension and Mobile, and that alert classifications can change as threat information changes.

If MetaMask labels a site “Malicious,” do not connect your wallet or sign a transaction; close the site. MetaMask says transaction simulations can improve alerts but do not detect every threat, and the warning does not technically prevent a user from proceeding. For a less definitive warning, verify the URL and contract address through the project’s official channels before taking any action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A wallet alert is a signal to stop and evaluate, not a substitute for understanding what you are signing. A simulation may improve the information available for an alert, but MetaMask does not say it detects every threat. Likewise, a browser warning and a wallet alert can help identify risks at different stages without certifying a site, extension, or transaction as safe when no warning appears.

What if there is no warning?

No warning is not the same as confirmation. Browser protections use threat information and may not yet recognize a new or changed scam. Wallet alerts and transaction simulations also have limits. Before a download, connection, or signature, independently confirm the exact domain, extension source, and purpose of the requested action. If the project’s official information does not explain the request, stop rather than relying on the page’s appearance.

What to do if you already shared your recovery phrase

If you entered your Secret Recovery Phrase on a website or gave it to an unexpected prompt, treat the wallet as compromised. MetaMask directs users in this situation to migrate to a new Secret Recovery Phrase. Changing a browser setting cannot undo the exposure; follow MetaMask’s recovery guidance through its official channels, and do not enter the exposed phrase into another site or support form.

The recovery phrase is not a routine login detail to provide in order to connect to a game or resolve a browser warning. MetaMask says legitimate MetaMask sites and non-malicious decentralized applications will not ask for it. If a site, download page, or purported support contact requests it, stop interacting and use official guidance instead. Do not let urgency or a promise to restore access persuade you to share the phrase again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much protection can browser warnings provide?

Browser warnings are useful safeguards, not proof that a page is safe when no warning appears. Google and Mozilla describe protections based on reported threats and browser warnings, while MetaMask notes that its transaction simulations do not catch every threat. A new scam, an imitation domain, or a misleading request may not be recognized. Verify the destination and the action independently, especially before installing an extension, connecting a wallet, or signing.

MetaMask’s July 2025 security report attributed the discovery of over 40 malicious Firefox extensions impersonating crypto wallets, including MetaMask, to Koi Security. That figure describes a reported campaign at that time; it is not a count of extensions currently active in 2026, nor a measure of how often browsers block crypto scams.

The number is a reminder to verify extensions through official installation routes, not a reason to conclude that every Firefox wallet extension is malicious. It also does not compare Chrome and Firefox or show how frequently browser protections catch scams. The cited browser guidance does not supply a general percentage of suspicious wallet pop-ups or links that protections block, so there is no defensible success rate to use as a safety guarantee.

Protection has several layers: browser tools can warn about reported unsafe sites and downloads; wallet alerts can provide additional trust and transaction-risk signals; and you can verify the source and meaning of a request before acting. None of those layers makes sharing a Secret Recovery Phrase safe or turns an unexplained signature into a reasonable risk.

A quick checklist before connecting to a crypto game or site

  • Browser protections for dangerous or deceptive sites and downloads are enabled.
  • You reached the site through an official project source and checked the exact domain.
  • The wallet prompt follows an action you deliberately initiated.
  • The request is understandable and matches what you intended to do.
  • No page or prompt asks you to reveal your Secret Recovery Phrase.
  • You stop if the browser or wallet labels the site malicious or the request does not make sense.
  • You install wallet extensions only through the wallet’s official download page or an official browser extension store.
  • You treat the absence of a warning as inconclusive, not as a guarantee that the page is safe.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop fake MetaMask pop-ups?

Close a MetaMask prompt that appears without an action you initiated, and close the site that triggered it. MetaMask says its genuine extension will not pop up without a user-initiated transaction. Do not connect, sign, or enter your Secret Recovery Phrase to test the prompt. Keep browser phishing and deceptive-site protections enabled, and verify the site through an official project source before returning.

How do I block suspicious crypto links?

Keep Chrome Safe Browsing or Firefox’s dangerous and deceptive-content protections enabled. If the browser warns that a site is dangerous, leave it. For links that are not flagged, check the exact domain by reaching the project through an official source rather than trusting an unsolicited message or a look-alike page. Browser protections help, but cannot guarantee that every new or changed scam will be detected.

How do I know if a wallet pop-up is real?

Consider what action caused it. MetaMask says its extension responds after a transaction action initiated by the user; a prompt that appears just on entering a site or at random is likely a scam. Verify the site and the request, and do not sign anything you cannot explain. A logo or familiar-looking interface is not proof of authenticity.

Does a browser pop-up blocker protect my crypto wallet?

Not by itself. Ordinary pop-up controls can reduce unsolicited website windows, but they are not the same as phishing protection and are not shown to block every fake wallet panel, deceptive page, or malicious extension. Keep unsafe-site protections on, verify the source, and close wallet prompts you did not initiate.

Can Chrome or Firefox guarantee that a suspicious link will be blocked?
