VRChat gives you separate controls for three different problems: block a person to stop seeing or directly interacting with them, hide an avatar to remove unwanted visuals, and report a user, avatar, or world so VRChat can review it. Blocking is reversible, and you do not have to block someone before reporting them. A block does not remove the person from the instance or stop everything they can do to the world.
Choose the control that matches the problem
The fastest way to choose the right action is to identify what you want to stop and what you want VRChat to review.

These controls can be combined. For example, you can hide an avatar immediately, block the wearer if you do not want direct contact, and report the avatar if you believe it violates VRChat’s rules. Reporting does not require the block step.

How to block a user in VRChat
Use blocking when the issue is a particular person and you want to remove their presence from your view or prevent direct interaction. You can block someone while you are together in an instance or from their profile when you are elsewhere in the platform.

Block someone who is in your instance
- Select the user, or open the Quick Menu and go to the Here tab to find everyone currently in the instance.
- Open User Actions.
- Select Block User.
The block takes effect as a personal visibility and direct-interaction setting. It is not an instance-wide removal.
Block someone who is not in your instance
- Find the person through user search, your friends list, or another in-app user list.
- Open the person’s profile.
- Choose Moderate User.
- Select Block User.
What a block does—and does not do
- The blocked user remains in the same instance unless another system or moderator removes them.
- You do not see the blocked person.
- The blocked person cannot see or interact with you directly.
- The blocked person can still interact with the world and its objects. Those actions are invisible to you, so blocking is not a guarantee that every indirect effect stops.
- Other players may still see both of you and may continue interacting with either person.
Because the block is local to your relationship with that user, do not treat it as a kick, a world ban, or a way to protect every player in the room. If the conduct or content appears to violate VRChat’s rules, submit a report as well.
How to unblock a user
Blocking can be undone from your blocked-user list.
- Open the Main Menu.
- Go to the Social area.
- Select Blocked.
- Choose the person you want to restore.
- Press Unblock.
Unblocking reverses your personal block; it does not undo a report or change any moderation decision.
How to hide an avatar in VRChat
Hiding is the right response when the avatar’s appearance, effects, or performance impact is the problem and you do not necessarily want to block the person. VRChat provides a per-user option and a global option for a specific avatar.
Hide the avatar worn by one user
- Select the user wearing the avatar.
- Open User Actions and the avatar display controls.
- Choose the option to hide that user’s avatar for you.
The avatar display controls also let you show the selected user’s avatar again or defer to your Safety Settings. This choice follows the selected user rather than every copy of the avatar in VRChat.

Hide one avatar for every wearer you encounter
- While viewing a user who is wearing the avatar, open the avatar display controls.
- Select Hide Avatar Globally.
Global hiding is tied to that particular avatar. If you see the same avatar worn by another person, it remains hidden for you. To undo it, open the same control while viewing that avatar and toggle Hide Avatar Globally again.
Why a global hide may appear not to work
VRChat treats separately uploaded copies or versions as separate avatars. A creator’s edited re-upload, a duplicate upload, or another version can therefore appear even when you globally hid an earlier version. In that situation, hide the newly encountered version as well.
How to report a user
Report a person when you want VRChat to review their behavior or account. You can report from the same places used to identify a nearby user or from the person’s profile.
Report someone in your current instance
- Select the person, or open the Quick Menu and use the Here tab.
- Select Report.
- Complete the report form with the requested details.
Report someone outside your current instance
- Open the person’s profile from search, a friends list, or another in-app user list.
- Choose Moderate User.
- Select Report User.
- Complete the form.
VRChat states that you do not need to block a user before reporting them. If you want to preserve your own view while the report is reviewed, blocking can be a separate personal-safety choice.
How to report an avatar
An avatar report concerns the content of the avatar itself, rather than necessarily the wearer’s conduct.
- Select a person who is wearing the avatar.
- Open View Avatar Details.
- Select Report.
- Complete the report form and describe the relevant issue.
You can also report an avatar from a menu list such as Recently Used or Favorites: open the avatar’s details page from that list, choose Report, and submit the form.

If the avatar is also causing an immediate visual problem, hide it first. Hiding changes what you see; it does not notify VRChat or replace a content report.
How to report a world
Report the world you are currently visiting
- Open the Worlds menu.
- Select Current World.
- Select Report.
- Complete the report form.
Report a world you visited earlier
- Open a relevant Worlds list.
- Select the world’s page.
- Choose Report.
- Complete the form with the reason and context.
A world report is separate from a report about a person you met there. If both the world and a user appear to violate the rules, submit the appropriate reports for each target.
What to include in a report
VRChat’s ticketing guidance asks for a clear description and relevant context. Keep the explanation focused on what happened, where it happened, and why the selected user, avatar, or world is the correct target.

- Identify whether you are reporting a user, an avatar, or a world.
- When submitting evidence through the Help Desk, attach screenshots or video that directly show the reported violation.
Do not assume that an attachment proves an unrelated claim. Evidence is most useful when it shows the specific behavior or content you described and includes enough context for a reviewer to identify it.
When to use in-app reporting versus the Help Desk
VRChat’s reporting guidance changed effective January 26, 2026. For ordinary reports, users are encouraged to use the in-app reporting flow. The Help Desk remains the route for appeals and for reports that need attached evidence such as screenshots or recordings.

VRChat does not promise a direct response to every report, and it does not disclose the moderation action taken in response to a report. A lack of reply is therefore not confirmation that no review occurred.

Safety tools for unwanted avatars and interactions
Blocking, hiding, and reporting address specific people or content. VRChat’s Safety settings provide broader controls over which avatar features are displayed, which can help when the immediate problem is an effect or feature rather than a single rule violation.
Safety presets and feature controls
Safety presets and settings control which avatar features are shown. Adjust them when you want a broader reduction in unexpected effects across nearby users rather than a one-off hide.
Mute
Muting reduces unwanted voice interaction from the selected user. It is an interaction control, not a report and not a replacement for hiding an avatar that is causing visual effects.
Safe Mode
Safe Mode is a shortcut that disables features on nearby users. It is useful when several nearby avatars are producing effects at once and you need a quick way to reduce them.
Personal Space
Personal Space makes nearby users disappear from your view while they may still be heard. Because it changes visibility without necessarily stopping audio, use mute separately if hearing the person is also a problem.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a block removes someone from the world
It does not. The blocked user stays in the instance and can continue interacting with world objects. Use a report when you want VRChat to evaluate conduct or content.
Blocking before reporting because you think it is required
It is not required. VRChat explicitly says a user does not need to be blocked before being reported. Report directly from the appropriate user, avatar, or world route.
Using a user report for an avatar-only problem
Open View Avatar Details and report the avatar itself when the content is the issue. A user report is for the person or account; an avatar report identifies the asset for review.

Global hiding applies to the particular avatar you selected. Separately uploaded copies or versions are separate, so repeat the hide for each version you encounter.
Using a hide control when you need moderation review
Hide controls are private display settings. They do not send information to VRChat. Submit an in-app report, or use the Help Desk when you need to attach screenshots or recordings.
Sending evidence that does not show the violation
VRChat asks that screenshots or video directly show the reported violation. Choose clear, relevant evidence and explain the surrounding context in the ticket.
A practical decision path
- Need immediate relief from one person? Select the user and choose Block User. Remember that the person remains in the instance.
- Only the avatar’s appearance or effects are a problem? Hide the selected user’s avatar, or use Hide Avatar Globally for that specific avatar.
- Is the user, avatar, or world potentially violating VRChat’s rules? Open the matching Report route and submit the form. Blocking is optional.
- Do you need to attach screenshots or video, or appeal a decision? Use the Help Desk ticketing system.
- Are multiple nearby avatars creating unwanted effects? Use Safety settings, Safe Mode, Personal Space, or mute as appropriate, then report any conduct or content that warrants review.
What each action means for other players
A block changes the relationship between you and one user; it does not erase that person for everyone else. Other players can still see both of you, and the blocked user’s world interactions may remain visible to others. A per-user avatar hide changes only your display of that wearer. A global avatar hide changes only your display of that particular avatar across wearers. A report asks VRChat to review the selected target, but the platform does not promise a personal response or reveal the resulting moderation action.

Keeping the controls straight
Think of the features as four different layers:
- Block: a reversible personal boundary with one user.
- Hide selected avatar: a display choice for one wearer.
- Hide Avatar Globally: a display choice for one avatar asset across wearers, excluding separate uploads or versions.
- Report: a request for VRChat to review a user or content.
Using the narrowest control that solves the immediate problem preserves your options: hide an avatar for a visual issue, block for direct-contact protection, and report when moderation review is warranted.
