Set restrictions on the child’s Xbox family profile, then configure web filtering, communication, multiplayer, and purchase approval as separate controls. Game age limits do not automatically decide who can contact a child or whether they can play online.
Set an age limit for games and rated content
Choose the child’s family profile and set an age-appropriate content restriction. You can do this on the console or in the Xbox Family Settings app. Menu labels may vary by software version or region; if a label differs, look for the equivalent family or content-restriction setting.
On the Xbox One console
- Open Settings > Privacy and online safety.
- Select the family member whose settings you want to change.
- Open Content restrictions and choose an age-appropriate level.
ESRB explains that the numerical age setting corresponds to ESRB game ratings and other content-rating systems. Its example says an age restriction of 11 allows games rated up to E10+ but not Teen- or Mature-rated games. This is an ESRB illustration, not a guarantee for every title or region. In the Xbox Family Settings app
- Choose the child under Your Family > Content Restrictions.
- Turn on Filter Inappropriate Content.
- Set Allow Content Suitable for Age to the child’s age.

Filter websites and searches
Web filtering is separate from game-rating restrictions. Microsoft Support’s indexed Xbox One instructions give this route:
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings.
- Select the child account, then choose Web filtering.
Microsoft describes this setting as filtering inappropriate websites and searches. The precise filter categories and browser coverage are not established here, so check the current options shown on the console. Microsoft Support: Manage web filtering

Control communication and multiplayer separately
Age-rating limits do not define a child’s online contact or multiplayer access. Review these settings separately in the Xbox family controls. ESRB’s Xbox guide describes communication choices of Everyone, Friends Only, and No One, and identifies multiplayer as a separate setting. Require approval for Microsoft Store purchases
Purchase approval is a spending control, not a content filter. Microsoft Support documents a family setting that requires children to ask before buying from the Microsoft Store on Xbox.
