To block games above a child’s age rating, manage restrictions on the child’s own account through your platform’s family controls: use Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management on PS5, or select the child’s profile in Xbox Family Settings or Microsoft Family Safety and set an age-based content filter. PlayStation also documents a request-and-approval process for restricted games; check the Xbox family app or account for its current options rather than assuming it uses the same process.
Before you change the settings
Set up restrictions on the child’s account, not just the adult account used to configure the console. PlayStation requires an adult family manager to create or manage a family and add the child. Microsoft’s Xbox guidance likewise uses a family group with the child’s Microsoft/Xbox account. Separate child accounts make it possible to apply age limits to the right player.
Ratings and feature availability can vary by country or region. The rating examples below refer to US guidance; use the ratings displayed for your family’s region and choose an age ceiling that blocks the games you do not want the child to access.
Set game-age limits on PlayStation
1. Add the child to your PlayStation family
Sign in as the adult family manager, create a family if needed, and add the child as a family member. Give the child a separate child account with an accurate date of birth. PlayStation’s parental-controls guide describes family membership as a prerequisite for setting child controls.

2. Open the child’s parental controls
- On PS5, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child, then select the parental-control setting you want to change.
- Alternatively, sign in to Account Management on the web, open Family Management, select the child, and choose Edit. Child-level controls are also available in the PlayStation Family app.
3. Choose the game and app age level
Set Age Level for Games or the relevant Games and Apps restriction to the appropriate age. You can adjust presets; changing individual values moves the restriction level to Customize. PlayStation says the selected settings can cover age levels for PS5, PS4, and PS3 games and apps.
If a child is already playing when you change a restriction, PlayStation advises having them sign out and back in for the change to take effect. Make sure the child has completed email verification and is signed in. To reduce the chance of bypasses, restrict the child’s ability to change controls and to use unrestricted guest or new accounts.

4. Review a request for a blocked game
When a restricted PS5 game is blocked, the child can send a request. The family manager or an appointed parent or guardian can review it through a notification, the PS Family app, web Family Management, or PS5 notifications and Allowed Games. You can approve or deny the request; granting access to a particular game is distinct from changing the child’s general age limit.

2. Set the content filter for the child
- Open Xbox Family Settings or Microsoft Family Safety, or sign in to Xbox family settings.
- Select the child or family member and choose the Xbox platform where prompted.
- Open the content filter and set the age limit appropriate for the child. Microsoft describes this filter as limiting apps and games by age appropriateness, and its guidance says app and game filters apply on Xbox.
The official Xbox materials support using the app or web family controls, but do not establish one universal current Xbox console-menu path. If you prefer to configure settings on the console, follow the prompts shown there rather than relying on a menu sequence that may differ by version or region.
3. Add playtime limits separately if needed
Content filtering controls age suitability; time limits are a separate setting. In Microsoft Family Safety, select the family member and Xbox platform, then open Set time limits > Apps, features, and games. Turn limits on, select a game, and set daily time and allowed hours. See Microsoft’s instructions for setting app and game limits.

Choose an age ceiling using your region’s ratings
For the United States, PlayStation describes the ESRB M (Mature) category as potentially suitable for people ages 17 and older. That rating is an age indication, not a recommendation that every 17-year-old should play every M-rated game. Xbox Wire’s 2020 explanation of age filters gives the example of an eight-year-old limited to E-rated games and blocked from more mature titles. Treat that as an illustration of how age filtering works, not as a universal policy or a current menu instruction.
Check the rating icon and details for the game in your region, then set the child’s content ceiling below the titles you want blocked. PlayStation’s US ratings guidance notes that regional conditions vary, so ESRB labels should not be assumed to apply worldwide.

Game ratings are only one part of parental controls
A game-age filter is not a blanket control over everything a child may encounter in or around a game. PlayStation lists game access separately from communication and user-generated-content controls. Review privacy and communication settings as needed, and check linked third-party apps or services for their own controls. PlayStation’s safety guide for parents explains these separate settings.
Xbox family controls also include separate options for managing a child’s gaming experience. Check the family app or web account for the controls relevant to your household, and verify current per-game exception behavior there; the cited Microsoft materials do not establish a universal Xbox exception flow matching PlayStation’s documented request process.
Which platform setting should you use?
| What you need | PlayStation | Xbox |
|---|---|---|
| Where to manage game-age limits | PS5 Family Management, Account Management on the web, or PlayStation Family app. | Xbox Family Settings or Microsoft Family Safety; Microsoft also identifies its family web tools. |
| Documented restricted-game request | Child can request access to a blocked PS5 game; family manager or appointed parent/guardian can approve or deny. | Current per-game exception behavior is not established by the cited setup material; check the family app or account. |
| Other controls | Communication, user-generated content, spending, and playtime controls are separate from game-age access. | Time limits can be configured separately from the age filter through Microsoft Family Safety. |
For setup details, see PlayStation’s console parental-controls instructions, Xbox family settings, and ESRB’s Xbox parental-controls overview.
