To add storage for games you can play without moving them back to the console, use a compatible Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card. A USB 3.1 external drive can hold games and run backward-compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles, but Microsoft says it cannot run Series X|S-optimized games. Moving a game to USB may free internal space, but an optimized title may need to be moved back before you can play it.

Which Xbox storage option should you use?

Storage option What it can do Best use
Internal console storage Primary fast storage for installed games. Keep games here when they need internal storage to run and you do not have a compatible expansion card.
Dedicated Series X|S expansion card Runs Series X|S-optimized games; Xbox describes its performance as matching the internal SSD. You can select it as a default install location and move or copy games between it and local storage. Add space for Series X|S games you want to keep installed and ready to play.
USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD Stores Xbox games and can run backward-compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles. It cannot run Series X|S-optimized games, according to Xbox’s comparison. Keep a game library or archive, or play compatible older games directly from the drive.

Xbox Wire’s overview of storage for both Series X and Series S explains the expansion-card features and moving or copying games: Xbox Series X and Series S storage details. Microsoft’s Xbox Series S product page says Series S supports standard standalone hard drives and products with the Designed for Xbox badge, and recommends the 1TB Series X|S expansion card for the custom SSD experience.

Can you play Xbox Series X|S games from an external hard drive?

Not from a standard USB external HDD or SSD, according to Xbox’s published storage comparison. It can store an optimized game, but storage is not the same as being able to launch that game from the drive. To play it, move or copy it to internal storage or a compatible Series X|S expansion card.

The dedicated expansion card is the external-storage option documented to run Series X|S-optimized games directly. Xbox says it can match the internal SSD performance, which makes it the appropriate choice if your goal is more immediately playable space rather than an archive.

How to move games to external storage

Xbox confirms that players can move or copy games between local and external storage, and choose the expansion card as a default install location. The exact current Settings path and button labels are not verified here, so use Microsoft’s live Manage storage support page for the current dashboard instructions rather than relying on a potentially outdated sequence.

  • For an optimized game you want to play without transferring it back, choose internal storage or the dedicated expansion card as its destination.
  • For games you are keeping as a library, a USB drive can store titles you are not currently playing.
  • Copying keeps the source copy; moving relocates the game. Confirm the destination and available space in the console’s current storage management screen before starting.

How to free up space without losing your game library

  1. Identify installed games you are not playing now. Use the console’s current storage management screen to review installed content; consult Xbox Support: Manage storage for the current menu path.
  2. Move titles you want to keep but do not need immediately to a USB external drive. They remain stored there, but Series X|S-optimized games generally must be transferred to internal storage or an expansion card to run.
  3. For an optimized game you want ready to launch, place it on the internal SSD or the dedicated expansion card, not a standard USB drive.
  4. Set the expansion card as the default install location if you want new games to go there. Xbox Wire confirms this option, though the dashboard labels may have changed since its 2020 article.
  5. After a move or copy completes, check the console’s storage screen to confirm the destination and the space available before removing any other content.

Choosing between an expansion card and a USB drive

Choose the expansion card when your priority is additional space for Series X|S-optimized games that remain playable where they are installed. Choose USB storage when you mainly want a larger library or a place to keep games between play sessions, and accept that optimized titles may need a transfer before launch. Microsoft’s Series S FAQ specifies compatibility for that model; Xbox Wire describes the storage behavior across Series X and Series S, so check model-specific support for other Xbox consoles.
