To breed armadillos in Minecraft, feed one Spider Eye to each of two adult armadillos. They must be unrolled to eat. Mojang documents this mechanic in the Java Edition 1.20.5 and Bedrock 1.20.80 release notes.
How to breed armadillos
- Find two adult armadillos. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.5 and Bedrock 1.20.80 notes list Savannas and Badlands as armadillo spawning biomes. Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes · Bedrock 1.20.80 release notes
- Hold a Spider Eye and use it on the first adult armadillo, then feed the second adult one as well. The Java release notes state: “Feeding two adult Armadillos Spider Eyes makes them breed.”
- Allow the breeding action to proceed. The cited release notes do not specify an exact time until an offspring appears, so there is no supported wait time to give.
Why an armadillo may not eat
A rolled-up armadillo cannot eat or be tempted by food. Give it time to unroll, then try feeding it again. Mojang’s Java 1.20.5 and Bedrock 1.20.80 notes both say an armadillo unrolls after four seconds without detecting a threat.
What Spider Eyes do for baby armadillos
Spider Eyes are also used to speed up a baby armadillo’s growth. The Java 1.20.5 notes confirm the effect but do not state how much time it saves.
Which versions document the mechanic?
The breeding method is documented in Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.5 and Bedrock 1.20.80 release notes, both dated April 23, 2024. The core instruction in the Java notes is to feed Spider Eyes to two adult armadillos; the Bedrock notes also document the relevant armadillo behavior and spawning biomes.
