One parent will carry an egg and seek a suitable land nest; protect the egg block from trampling while it cracks and hatches. These instructions are based on the mod’s 1.20 source branch, and the cited CurseForge page lists Alex’s Mobs 1.22.9 for Minecraft 1.20.1, released September 6, 2024. Check that your game, loader, and mod version match before relying on the details.
How to breed crocodiles
- Bring two crocodiles together. The breeding behavior requires a pair.
- Feed each crocodile rotten flesh. The official advancement says, “Breed two crocodiles with rotten flesh. Careful not to trample their eggs!” The 1.20 entity code marks one crocodile as carrying an egg after the breeding goal completes. See the official in-game advancement text and the crocodile entity code.
- Give the egg-carrying crocodile access to land. It needs a suitable habitat block and open space above it to place the egg.
- Keep players and eligible living mobs off the egg block. Trampling can remove eggs.
- Wait for the egg block to crack and hatch. When it reaches the hatch stage, it produces one baby crocodile per egg represented in the block.
Where crocodiles lay eggs
The crocodile’s code accepts sand or a block included in the mod’s crocodile-spawning habitat tag, with an empty block above the nest location. Make sure the parent can reach land with those conditions; a suitable-looking spot may not qualify if the required space is blocked. The habitat and placement checks are in the 1.20 crocodile entity implementation.
How to protect and hatch crocodile eggs
Once placed, treat the egg block as vulnerable: do not walk over it, and keep other eligible tramplers away. The block’s trampling logic can remove an egg; if several eggs are represented in the block, they can be lost one at a time. The warning also appears in the official advancement text.
Eggs advance through two cracking transitions before hatching. The block uses random ticks, with a greater chance of progress during a particular time-of-day interval. The available code does not establish a dependable real-time incubation duration, so an exact number of minutes cannot be promised; random ticks, game settings, and version can affect elapsed time. Why breeding or hatching may not work
- No egg appears: Check that there are two crocodiles and that both received rotten flesh. Then ensure the egg-carrying parent can reach land with recognized habitat and open space above it.
- An egg disappears or the egg count falls: Consider whether a player or eligible living mob trampled the block.
- The egg seems slow to hatch: Hatching depends on random block ticks, so there is no supported fixed timer to use as a guarantee.
These checks follow the prerequisites and risks represented in the crocodile code and egg-block code.
Does being near the eggs tame baby crocodiles?
The shared reptile-egg code checks for a nearby player when hatchlings spawn, but its taming behavior applies only to hatchlings that use a tamable-animal class. The crocodile’s class does not follow that path in the cited code. Proximity therefore is not evidence that a baby crocodile becomes permanently tamed or remains safe to handle as an adult.
