Your Kickstarter pledge is not necessarily your final cost. To build a realistic budget, add four separate lines: the reward pledge, any add-ons you plan to select, shipping to your country, and applicable tax or import charges. A creator may collect some of those amounts at checkout and others later in a pledge manager, so there is no universal Kickstarter all-in total.
Use this framework: estimated total = reward + chosen add-ons + shipping + applicable tax/import charges. Treat any amount the campaign has not finalized as an estimate, not as zero. Replace estimates with the address-specific amount shown by the campaign or pledge manager when it becomes available.

What you may pay, and when
Kickstarter campaigns can split the cost of backing into multiple transactions. The project page may show a reward price, while shipping, add-ons and tax are selected or calculated later. Read the campaign’s reward description, shipping section, updates and post-campaign instructions together.
| Cost | What it covers | When it may be charged | What to record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reward pledge | The tier or reward you select | At the campaign pledge checkout | The exact tier price and quantity |
| Add-ons | Optional extras, upgrades or additional items | During the campaign or later in a pledge manager | Each item, quantity and any stated shipping rule |
| Shipping | Delivery from the creator or fulfillment partner to your address | During the campaign or after it ends | The rate for your destination and whether it is provisional |
| Tax and import charges | Sales tax, VAT, GST, customs duty or other destination charges | At pledge-manager checkout, delivery or import, depending on the arrangement | Amounts explicitly stated for your country; leave unresolved items marked as estimates |
The campaign’s setup controls the sequence. Kickstarter supports country-specific rates, and its Pledge Manager can use flat-rate or weight-based shipping. A creator may wait until closer to fulfillment to set rates when packaging, carrier prices and destination rules are clearer.

Build a four-line budget before you pledge
1. Enter the reward amount
Write down the price of the exact reward tier you intend to select. If the tier has quantity limits, early-bird terms or a choice between versions, record the option that affects the price. Do not use the campaign’s lowest advertised pledge unless it is the tier you will actually receive.
2. List only the add-ons you expect to buy
Add-ons are optional products or upgrades offered alongside a reward. They can be available on the campaign page or added after the campaign in a pledge manager. Record each add-on separately rather than folding it into an unexplained total. Check whether the creator says an add-on changes the parcel weight, requires a second shipment or has a separate shipping amount.
3. Enter shipping for your delivery country
Use the project’s estimate for your country or region. Label it provisional if the creator says shipping will be calculated later, if a pledge manager has not opened, or if the page gives only a broad range. A rate shown for one country cannot be safely applied to another.

Record any tax, VAT, GST, customs duty or brokerage charge the campaign explicitly assigns to your location. If the creator says the amount will be calculated later, keep the line open instead of entering zero. Taxes and duties are not automatically included in a shipping quote.
Keep a clearly labeled contingency only for a real unresolved variable, such as a pending destination rate or tax calculation. There is no official “typical Kickstarter percentage” that can be added to every pledge.
How shipping is handled
Shipping collected during the campaign
Some projects display a country-specific shipping charge while you choose a reward. If that amount appears in the pledge flow, capture it in your worksheet and save a screenshot or note of the date. The creator can still publish later updates about fulfillment, but the amount you saw is the relevant starting point for your pledge.

Shipping collected after the campaign
Other creators collect delivery charges through Kickstarter’s Pledge Manager after the campaign closes. This lets them use more accurate package dimensions, weights, carrier rates and destination lists. The eventual charge may therefore differ from an early estimate on the project page.
Flat-rate versus weight-based shipping
Kickstarter’s Pledge Manager supports both flat-rate and weight-based shipping. A flat rate charges the same amount for a defined destination or shipping class. Weight-based shipping can change when you add multiple rewards or heavy add-ons. If you are considering extras, test the cart with and without them when the manager opens; the additional item may raise the shipping band.
Why a quoted shipping amount can change
- The creator has not finalized packaging or fulfillment quantities.
- Carrier prices, fuel surcharges or international service availability have changed.
- Your country has been moved to a different shipping zone.
- An add-on changes the parcel’s size or weight.
- The project uses a later address survey or pledge manager rather than collecting shipping at pledge time.
Kickstarter’s guidance recommends setting rates nearer fulfillment when costs are clearer. Treat an early figure as a planning number unless the creator states that it is final.
How add-ons and upgrades affect your total
Add-ons selected after you back
A pledge manager can offer post-campaign add-ons and upgrades. You may be asked to pay for them immediately in the manager, or the creator may combine them with a later invoice, depending on the project’s workflow. The original pledge amount does not automatically include extras you have not selected.
Questions to answer for every add-on
- Is the price per item, per set or per pledge?
- Does the item ship with the main reward or separately?
- Does it add a new shipping charge or change the existing rate?
- Is the add-on available to every backer or only to particular reward tiers?
- Will tax be recalculated on the combined goods value?
Use the project’s own terms for these answers. Kickstarter’s platform capability does not guarantee that every creator uses the same pricing or shipping policy.

Tax may not be charged at the initial pledge
Kickstarter’s tax explanation dated August 13, 2025 says its campaign flow does not charge tax at pledge time and describes collection after the campaign. Kickstarter summarizes the distinction with the sentence, Pledges aren’t purchases.
That wording explains the platform’s treatment; it is not a universal exemption from tax in your jurisdiction.

Creator-controlled VAT workflows
Kickstarter’s April 13, 2026 release note says, Creators now have more control over how VAT is handled in the Pledge Manager.
A creator may use Kickstarter’s built-in manager, a third-party pledge manager or the creator’s own system. The project’s current tax notice should tell you which method applies to your address.
U.S. and Canadian tax collection by Kickstarter
Kickstarter continues to collect and remit applicable U.S. and Canadian taxes where required. The exact tax shown depends on the destination, the items in your order and the campaign’s setup. Do not infer that a project shipping from the United States or Canada has no tax for you.
VAT, customs and duty are different lines
VAT or sales tax is a consumption tax. Import duty is a customs charge that can arise when goods enter a country. A carrier may also collect a brokerage or handling fee. A shipping line that says “delivery” does not by itself prove that those charges are prepaid. If the creator says taxes are collected later, budget for that later checkout; if the campaign is silent, keep the amount unresolved rather than assuming it is included.
Kickstarter platform fees are not normally added to your pledge
For projects using the U.S. fee schedule, Kickstarter lists a 5% platform fee and U.S. payment processing of 3% plus $0.30 per pledge, with a micropledge exception. Those amounts are deducted from the proceeds of a successfully funded project. They are creator-side funding deductions, not a general surcharge that a backer should add to a personal pledge estimate. Fee treatment can differ in other countries, so do not apply the U.S. percentages to a project governed by another fee page.
What the post-campaign tools mean for a backer
Creators can choose different ways to collect addresses, shipping and extras. The choice affects what you will see after the campaign.
| Workflow | Shipping collection | Add-ons | Tax responsibility | Backer implication |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kickstarter Pledge Manager | Can be flat-rate or weight-based and collected after the campaign | Supported | Kickstarter can handle applicable taxes for listed markets, subject to the creator’s configuration | Expect a later checkout that may replace estimates with address-specific amounts |
| Third-party pledge manager | Set by the creator’s chosen service | Depends on the service and campaign | Tax compliance and remittance remain with the creator under the described third-party approach | Follow the creator’s separate invitation and tax disclosures |
| Basic survey | Cannot charge shipping | Cannot offer add-ons | Cannot charge tax | The creator may need another payment method or later arrangement |
Kickstarter identifies third-party services such as BackerKit and PledgeBox as examples, but the important question for you is not the provider’s name. It is whether the creator has stated when shipping is due, how tax is calculated and how add-ons are billed.

Changes after you have completed a pledge manager
Kickstarter’s March 12, 2026 release note says creators can edit certain pledge-manager shipping settings and rewards or add-ons after launch. Pricing changes apply to future backers; people who have already completed the pledge manager will not be charged more because of those changes. Keep your completed confirmation and receipt. If a later project update displays a different price, check whether you completed the manager before the change and contact the creator through the project’s official communication channel if the account record does not match.
Worked budgeting examples
The figures below are illustrations of the method, not typical Kickstarter prices or predictions for any project.
Example: shipping known at pledge time
| Line | Illustrative amount |
|---|---|
| Reward | $80 |
| Chosen add-on | $15 |
| Shipping shown for your country | $20 |
| Tax stated in the checkout | $9 |
| Estimated total | $124 |
Because all four lines are displayed before payment, $124 is a workable estimate for that checkout. Keep the receipt in case the creator later opens an optional add-on sale.
Example: shipping and tax deferred
| Line | Amount at campaign close | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Reward | $80 | Known |
| Add-ons | $0 | Known only if you choose none |
| Shipping | Not yet stated | Leave as a provisional line |
| Tax/import charges | Not yet calculated | Do not assume zero |
Your initial payment in this example is not the final budget. Set aside money for the two unresolved lines and update the worksheet when the pledge manager presents the destination-specific total.
Example: an add-on changes shipping
Suppose a reward ships at a flat $18 rate, but adding a boxed expansion moves the order into a $27 shipping band. The add-on’s price and the $9 shipping difference are separate budget entries. Do not compare only the item prices when deciding whether the extra is affordable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon budgeting mistakes and fixes
Mistake: treating the reward price as the total
Fix: Keep reward, add-ons, shipping and tax/import charges on separate lines from the moment you discover the project.

- Enhances Replayability: Expands strategies and keeps each game feeling new.
- Seamless Integration: Easy to add to your existing Cascadia setup.

Mistake: assuming “shipping included” means duties are included
Fix: Look for explicit language about VAT, customs, duty and brokerage. Ask the creator which charges are prepaid for your destination.
Mistake: using another backer’s shipping amount
Fix: Use the rate attached to your country, region and order weight. A different address or add-on mix can produce a different total.
Mistake: forgetting later add-ons
Fix: Decide whether you will buy extras before the pledge manager closes and record their possible shipping effect. Do not assume the original pledge reserves them at the original postage rate.
Mistake: adding Kickstarter’s creator fees to your pledge
Fix: Treat the published 5% and 3% plus $0.30 U.S. figures as deductions from a successful project’s proceeds, not as a backer surcharge.
Mistake: ignoring an address deadline
Fix: Complete the pledge manager by the stated deadline and verify your country, postal code and address before payment. A correction after fulfillment may require a new shipping charge.
Backer checklist
- Open the reward description and write down the exact tier and quantity.
- List every add-on you intend to select, including upgrades and duplicate items.
- Find the shipping amount for your delivery country and mark it final or provisional.
- Read the project’s tax, VAT, customs and duty statements.
- Check whether shipping and add-ons will be collected in a pledge manager.
- Calculate reward plus add-ons plus shipping plus applicable tax or import charges.
- Keep a cushion only for a named unresolved charge; do not use an invented standard percentage.
- Save the pledge confirmation and later pledge-manager receipt.
- When the manager opens, compare its address-specific total with your worksheet before paying.
- After completing the manager, retain proof of completion if shipping settings later change.
When to contact the creator
Ask a concise, destination-specific question when the campaign does not say whether shipping includes tax or duty, when an add-on’s postage is unclear, or when the pledge manager total conflicts with the project’s stated policy. Include your country and the reward or add-on combination, but never post payment details publicly. The creator controls the project’s fulfillment terms, so only the creator can confirm an unresolved campaign-specific amount.
Kickstarter’s platform tools provide the mechanics for collecting pledges and later charges, but they do not make every project’s pricing identical. The reliable budget is the one that keeps each line separate and updates it when the creator supplies the final address-specific figures.
