You can run a prerecorded video as a continuous YouTube livestream by having FFmpeg read the file in real time and send the encoded output to YouTube, with Docker keeping the FFmpeg process in a container. The pieces have separate jobs: YouTube Studio supplies the stream endpoint and key, FFmpeg handles media and transport, and Docker runs the process. You still need to plan for monitoring, recovery, content rights, and YouTube’s archive limits; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived.
What you need before building the stream
- A YouTube account with live streaming enabled. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- A video file you have the rights to stream, including its audio.
- A machine or remote host that can run Docker and FFmpeg continuously, plus enough sustained upload capacity for your chosen video bitrate.
- The current YouTube server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password.
This guide separates the YouTube, FFmpeg, and Docker responsibilities. The FFmpeg command below is deliberately the documented generic file-to-RTMP example, not a verified, ready-to-run YouTube or Docker deployment. You must validate the output protocol and endpoint against your installed FFmpeg build and YouTube’s current stream details before relying on it.
Set up the YouTube livestream
- Open YouTube Studio and use Live Control Room to create or choose a stream. Follow the current encoder workflow for your account.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s workflow requires both values in the encoder; do not assume an old endpoint or key is still appropriate.
- Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends it; its RTMPS connection documentation specifies the
rtmpsprotocol, a valid YouTube endpoint and application path, and port 443. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion requirements. - Before making the broadcast continuous, start a test, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and check that the intended watch page is accessible.
Never put the stream key in a public tutorial, source repository, container image, or logs. Anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream. Keep it out of shared configuration and rotate it in YouTube if it is exposed.
Choose encoder settings that fit the source and connection
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations include H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a two-second keyframe interval (four seconds maximum). For H.264, YouTube lists the following recommended video bitrates in its current guidance accessed in 2026. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of quality or a measured minimum connection speed.

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 240p–720p, 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
For audio, YouTube’s guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1. Check the full, current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table before choosing a codec or output rate: recommendations and supported ranges differ by codec and resolution.
Match output to the actual video
Do not choose 1080p60 simply because it is available if the source is lower resolution or frame rate. Match the output to the material and your upload connection. Your sustained upstream capacity must cover the video and audio output with room for network variation; if it cannot, reduce the target bitrate or resolution and test stability before leaving the stream unattended.
Use the keyframe interval YouTube expects
Set a two-second keyframe interval if your encoder exposes that setting, and do not exceed YouTube’s stated four-second maximum. Use CBR for the encoder rate-control mode where available. Exact FFmpeg option names and behavior depend on the selected encoder and build, so verify them against the installed FFmpeg documentation rather than pasting an unvalidated command.

Send a file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents this generic real-time file-to-RTMP example:
ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream
The example illustrates reading a file at real-time speed and sending an FLV stream to an RTMP destination; myfile and the destination are placeholders. It is not a YouTube command, does not set the recommended encoder parameters, and does not configure Docker or a loop. Consult the FFmpeg protocols documentation, then adapt and test a command for your file, chosen output codec, current YouTube endpoint, and supported RTMPS transport. The FFmpeg documentation’s example uses RTMP, whereas YouTube recommends RTMPS.
For a looping broadcast, confirm the behavior of your chosen FFmpeg invocation and build during a real test. The cited generic example does not establish an exact looping command, what happens at the end of the file, or whether a reconnect resumes at the prior position. Do not treat “Docker is running” as proof that the stream is healthy.

Put the process in Docker without guessing at deployment details
Docker is the process-management layer; it does not configure YouTube or choose correct encoder settings. A production container needs an FFmpeg image or build, access to the source media, a carefully handled stream key, and a process configuration appropriate to the host. The exact image, command, restart policy, signal handling, health checks, resource limits, and secret-injection method depend on your Docker setup and were not established by the cited YouTube and FFmpeg material. Verify those details against current Docker documentation and the selected image before deployment; no single Dockerfile or compose file can be presented here as tested.
Whatever deployment you choose, keep media and credentials outside public image layers and source control, and make logs safe to share. Decide how the container will be started after a host reboot and how an operator will know if FFmpeg has exited or YouTube stopped receiving video. A restart policy can restart a process, but it does not by itself establish that the stream is delivering usable audio and video.
Plan for a stream that runs longer than 12 hours
Continuous live presence and a complete replay are different goals. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. Separately, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If a complete replay matters, do not rely on one uninterrupted event to create it. Plan a local recording and confirm that the archive file is growing during the broadcast. If uninterrupted channel presence matters more, account for the possibility that a very long event will lack a complete YouTube archive or usable rewind.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Monitor the stream and prepare for failure
YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend setting up ahead of time, previewing the stream, monitoring audio and video quality, and checking local archive growth. Apply those checks before and during operation:
- Confirm Live Control Room shows the expected preview before relying on the stream.
- Check audio and picture on the actual watch page, not only that FFmpeg is still running.
- Watch the local recording or archive file to make sure it continues growing if you need a backup.
- Plan who will respond to a failed process, lost network connection, rejected stream, or bad media output. Test recovery rather than assuming a container restart restores the broadcast correctly.
The cited platform guidance does not provide a Docker-specific recovery recipe. In particular, it does not establish a restart policy, reconnect behavior, or a promise that a restarted file stream will continue from its previous timestamp. Verify those properties in your chosen deployment and test a disconnection before treating it as unattended.

Check copyright and livestream rules before looping
Looping prerecorded footage does not grant permission to use it. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions require compliance with Community Guidelines and that creators have the necessary rights for their content. Clear the rights for the video, music, game footage, and other material in the stream; do not assume a recording is safe to rebroadcast simply because it is already online.
Or let it run in the cloud
