How to Build a Beginner-Friendly MTG Arena Deck on a Budget

By VGSources Team 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cheapest reliable way to build a playable MTG Arena deck is to finish the tutorial, use the starter decks and cards you already own, choose one format, and craft only the missing cards that solve a specific problem. Start with a simple plan, keep the list legal in the Arena deck editor, play the low-cost version, then spend rare or mythic rare wildcards only when your games show that a particular role is missing.

What “budget” means in MTG Arena

MTG Arena is a digital version of Magic: The Gathering available on desktop and mobile. Wizards of the Coast says players can start for free. Your Arena collection, deck lists and wildcards exist inside the digital account; buying paper cards or tabletop products does not add those cards to Arena.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That changes the meaning of a budget deck. You are not trying to minimize a paper purchase price. You are protecting a limited pool of in-game resources, especially wildcards, while turning the cards you already have into a coherent deck. A cheap deck is therefore not necessarily the deck with the fewest total cards. It is the deck that reaches a useful game plan with the fewest unnecessary crafts.

  • Use the tutorial and starter decks before spending wildcards.
  • Build around cards already in your collection whenever possible.
  • Craft cards only after identifying the job they must perform.
  • Check legality and rotation before committing valuable wildcards.
  • Test the inexpensive version first so your crafts answer real problems.

Finish the tutorial and use the starter decks first

Complete the new-player onboarding

A new or returning player should begin with Arena’s tutorial and starter decks. The official getting-started guidance presents these decks as the normal entry point, and they let you learn the client, basic turn structure and different styles of play without immediately spending wildcards.

Play several of the starter decks rather than choosing one from its first impression. Notice whether you enjoy attacking with creatures, trading resources, casting spells from a distance or building toward a larger late game. Your preference matters because a deck you understand is more useful than a theoretically stronger list you do not enjoy piloting.

Inventory your collection before opening a deck list

Look through the cards you already own and identify repeated colors, creatures, removal spells, combat tricks, card-draw effects and lands. Do not craft a complete list before doing this. The starter decks may already contain cards that can fill the basic roles of your first custom deck.

Keep a simple note of cards that appear in several possible builds. A flexible removal spell or a broadly useful creature can support more than one future deck, while a narrow card may be worthwhile only if it is central to the plan you choose.

Choose a format before choosing cards

Arena’s deck editor filters legality by the format you select. Choose that format before assembling a list; otherwise, you can spend time tuning a deck that cannot be played in your intended queue.

Format Pool and rotation Construction rules Budget implication
Standard Uses recently released sets and rotates as the legal card pool changes. At least 60 cards in the main deck; up to 15 sideboard cards; supports best-of-one and best-of-three play. Often the clearest starting point for cards obtained recently, but current legal sets, bans and the metagame must be checked before crafting.
Historic A digital-only, nonrotating, curated Arena card pool. At least 60 cards in the main deck; up to 15 sideboard cards, with seven sideboard cards used in best-of-one; normally no more than four copies of a card across deck and sideboard except basic lands. Older cards remain available, but a larger and more unfamiliar pool does not guarantee a cheaper or more competitive first deck.

Why Standard is usually the simpler first choice

Wizards describes Standard as a format built around recently released sets. That makes it easier to connect your starter and newly acquired cards to the legal environment, and the smaller, changing card pool can reduce the number of interactions a new player must learn at once.

Standard’s rotation is also its main budget warning. A card you craft today may eventually leave Standard, so check the current legal-set list and any ban announcements in the client before spending rare or mythic rare wildcards. The exact list changes over time; do not treat an old deck guide as a permanent legality reference.

When Historic makes sense

Historic can be appealing if you already own older Arena cards and want a nonrotating home for them. Because its pool is curated and digital-only, cards remain available after Standard rotation, subject to format changes. However, the larger pool can make deck construction and matchups harder for a beginner, and a nonrotating format is not evidence that your particular collection will require fewer wildcards.

Do not assume Alchemy’s future

In a September 11, 2026 format update, Wizards announced that Alchemy is planned to retire with the next Standard rotation in early 2027. That is a dated announcement, not a guarantee that the format landscape will remain unchanged. Verify the current format list and availability in Arena when you build or update a deck.

Write the deck’s plan in one sentence

Before selecting individual cards, describe what the deck is trying to do in one sentence. For example: “Play inexpensive creatures and keep attacking.” This is an editing tool, not an official Wizards prescription. If you cannot explain the plan simply, the list is probably trying to do too many things for a first budget build.

Turn the sentence into card roles

Translate the plan into jobs rather than favorite cards:

  • Early plays: cards that let the deck begin executing its plan quickly.
  • Pressure or payoff: threats that make the opponent answer you or reward the deck for reaching its intended stage of the game.
  • Interaction: removal, protection or disruption that prevents the opponent from ignoring your plan.
  • Card flow: draw or other effects that reduce the chance of running out of useful cards.
  • Mana: lands and other sources that let the deck cast its spells consistently.

A budget list does not need the most powerful card in every role. It needs enough cards performing the same job that your opening hands make sense together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the first plan narrow

A creature-focused plan is easier to assemble from a mixed starter collection than a strategy requiring a precise package of rare cards. If your sentence says “attack with inexpensive creatures,” avoid filling the deck with expensive spells that do not support attacking, even if those spells are individually impressive.

Likewise, a control-style plan should not spend its early slots on creatures that only work in an aggressive deck. Every card should either advance the sentence or protect it. Cards that do neither are the first candidates for replacement.

Build from cards you own in the deck editor

Use the client’s deck editor and collection filters to construct a legal shell before crafting anything. The exact collection you receive can differ, so the process is more durable than copying a fixed list.

  1. Select the format. Set Standard, Historic or the format you intend to play before adding cards. The editor’s legality display then evaluates the list against that format.
  2. Start a deck from your collection. Begin with an owned starter list or with cards you already have. Filter by color, card type, mana value or other collection fields to find cards that match your one-sentence plan.
  3. Add the core roles. Put in the early plays, threats, interaction and card-flow cards that support the plan. Prefer owned cards first, even when a missing card looks more powerful.
  4. Keep the main deck legal. Standard requires a minimum of 60 cards in the main deck. Do not add extra cards merely to avoid deciding; a larger deck makes it less likely that you draw the cards your plan depends on.
  5. Review the mana. Confirm that the lands and other mana sources can cast the spells you selected. If the deck contains several colors, check whether your existing lands actually support those colors before adding more colored spells.
  6. Inspect legality and missing cards. Use the client’s legality display and collection view to identify cards you do not own. Arena highlights missing cards when an imported list contains them.
  7. Record each proposed craft. Note the card’s rarity, how many copies the list requests and the role it fills. Do this before pressing the craft action.

Why the 60-card minimum matters

For Standard and Historic, the main deck must contain at least 60 cards. A budget player should normally treat that as a target rather than a suggestion to add every playable card. Staying close to the minimum improves the chance of drawing your early plays and makes test results easier to interpret.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle the sideboard separately

Sideboards matter in best-of-three play, while best-of-one queues use a different post-game structure. Standard allows up to 15 sideboard cards. Historic allows up to 15, with seven sideboard cards used in best-of-one. If you are beginning in best-of-one, spend your first resources on the main deck rather than crafting sideboard cards you cannot use in that queue.

Import a list without wasting wildcards

A deck import can save time, but importing a list is not the same as owning it. Arena’s official wildcard instructions describe reviewing missing cards in the editor and crafting them there. The budget-safe approach is to inspect the imported list instead of automatically crafting everything it requests.

  1. Import or open the list in the deck editor. Let the client display which cards are absent from your collection.
  2. Separate owned cards from missing cards. Keep the owned portion of the list and identify the exact gaps.
  3. Check the rarity of every gap. Wildcards redeem for cards of the same rarity, so a rare wildcard cannot be used as a mythic rare wildcard.
  4. Ask what each missing card does. Is it an early play, a removal spell, a mana source, a finisher or a synergy piece? If the card does not fill an essential role, postpone it.
  5. Build a playable substitute version. Replace missing cards with owned cards that perform a similar job, then test the deck.
  6. Craft selectively. Spend a wildcard only when the games show that the missing role is important and the card is appropriate for the format you chose.

This process avoids the common mistake of converting an entire imported list into immediate wildcard expenditure. It also gives you information about which cards your own collection can replace.

Use a wildcard decision framework

There is no universal optimal craft order or fixed wildcard budget that applies to every Arena account. Collections, formats and goals differ. Instead, evaluate each proposed craft with the same questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Does it support the deck’s one-sentence plan? A powerful card outside the plan is still an expensive distraction.
  • Is the role currently missing? If you already have enough early plays or removal, another card in that role may not improve the list.
  • Can an owned card substitute for it? Test the substitute before spending the wildcard.
  • How many copies are actually needed? Craft the number required for the current build, not every copy that appears in a theoretical list.
  • Will the card remain useful in the format you selected? In Standard, check rotation and current legality. In Historic, confirm that the card is legal and fits the larger environment.
  • What did testing reveal? A craft should answer a repeated problem, such as failing to interact with a specific permanent or running out of threats.

Rare and mythic rare wildcards deserve the most caution because each one can unlock a different future card. Avoid spending them merely to make the deck look like a published list. Common and uncommon replacements may be sufficient while you learn the strategy.

Play-test the low-cost version before upgrading

Take the owned-card version into games before making expensive changes. The goal is not to claim a guaranteed win rate; it is to discover what the deck actually lacks.

Track concrete failure patterns

  • Too many unplayable opening hands: review whether the early curve and mana support the plan.
  • Frequent mana problems: check the colors and costs of spells against the lands you own.
  • Board stalls: identify whether the deck needs more ways to break through or a clearer late-game payoff.
  • Opponents’ key cards survive repeatedly: consider whether the deck needs more appropriate interaction.
  • Hand empties before the game ends: look for card-flow tools that fit the plan.
  • Strong cards sit unused: remove cards that do not contribute to the stated strategy.

Write down observations after games instead of crafting immediately after a frustrating loss. A single matchup can make a card appear necessary when the broader issue is an inconsistent plan.

Test in the queue you intend to play

Best-of-one and best-of-three games place different demands on a deck. Best-of-three allows sideboarding between games, while best-of-one does not use a normal 15-card sideboard in the same way. Practice in your intended mode so your decisions about interaction and sideboard cards match the environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update the deck when legality changes

Standard’s card pool changes through rotation, bans and new set releases. Reopen the deck in Arena after format announcements and confirm that every card remains legal. A deck can stop being playable even when no card in your collection has changed.

When a Standard card rotates, decide whether to rebuild around the cards that remain, move the deck to a format where those cards are legal, or leave the list untouched as a collection record. Do not automatically replace every rotated card with a wildcard. Re-evaluate whether the original plan still makes sense.

Historic is nonrotating, but that does not mean it is static. Its curated digital card pool and format rules can change, so legality checks remain part of responsible deck maintenance.

Common budget-building mistakes and fixes

Crafting before choosing a format

Problem: You spend wildcards on cards that are illegal in the queue you want.

Fix: Select the format first and use the editor’s legality display before crafting.

Importing and crafting everything immediately

Problem: A complete list consumes wildcards before you know which cards matter to your collection or play style.

Fix: Import or open the list, separate owned and missing cards, test substitutes and craft only identified gaps.

Making the deck larger to include more options

Problem: Extra cards dilute the plan and make opening hands less consistent.

Mixing incompatible plans

Problem: The deck contains cheap attackers, slow control spells and unrelated high-cost cards, so draws pull in different directions.

Fix: Rewrite the one-sentence plan and remove cards that cannot be justified by it.

Ignoring the mana base

Problem: The spells look strong on paper but cannot be cast reliably with the lands you own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Check colors and costs before adding more spells. A less powerful card that you can cast is more useful than an inaccessible upgrade.

Crafting sideboard cards for a best-of-one plan

Problem: Valuable wildcards go toward cards that do not improve the queue you actually play.

Fix: Build and test the main deck first; add a sideboard when you are actively playing best-of-three and know which matchup problems it must address.

A practical first-deck blueprint

Suppose your collection supports the plan “play inexpensive creatures and keep attacking.” Begin with the starter or owned creatures that advance that plan. Add the lands needed to cast them, then include interaction that clears blockers or protects your board. Use any owned card-flow effect that helps you continue presenting threats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Now inspect the list for cards that contradict the plan. A very expensive spell may be strong but unnecessary if the deck wins by keeping pressure on early. A defensive card may be useful only if it protects the attack plan; otherwise it belongs in another deck.

Play this version first. If the deck repeatedly lacks a way to remove a blocker, craft a suitable removal card only if it is legal, its rarity cost is acceptable and the problem appears often enough to justify the expense. If the deck instead loses because it cannot cast its spells, improve the mana or simplify the colors before adding another threat.

A repeatable budget workflow

  1. Finish the tutorial and play the starter decks.
  2. Choose Standard, Historic or another currently available format.
  3. Write one sentence describing the deck’s plan.
  4. Filter your collection and build the smallest legal shell around that plan.
  5. Use the deck editor to check format legality and missing cards.
  6. Record each missing card’s rarity and role.
  7. Replace missing cards with owned substitutes where possible.
  8. Play games in your intended queue and note recurring failures.
  9. Craft only the cards that solve an identified, repeated problem.
  10. Recheck legality after rotations, bans and format announcements.

Final checklist before you spend a wildcard

  • The card is legal in the selected format.
  • The card directly supports the deck’s one-sentence plan.
  • You have tested an owned substitute or confirmed that no reasonable substitute fills the role.
  • You know the card’s rarity and the wildcard type required.
  • You know how many copies the current deck actually needs.
  • The deck remains at least 60 cards in the main deck.
  • You are crafting for the queue you really play.
  • You have checked current rotation and format announcements.

If those checks pass, the craft is tied to a concrete decision rather than impulse. That is the core of building a beginner-friendly Arena deck on a budget: begin with what you own, make the plan narrow, test before upgrading and let the format’s current rules—not an old list—determine what you keep.
