How to Build a Beginner Squad in a Tactical Strategy Game

There is no universal beginner squad. Check your game's squad size, roles, mission objective, and action rules, then build a lineup whose strengths work together.

There is no single beginner squad that works across tactical strategy games. Start with the game’s squad limit, role descriptions, and mission objective, then choose a lineup whose roles complement one another under that game’s rules.

Start with the game’s rules and the mission

Before choosing characters or classes, check the in-game tutorial or official manual for three things:

  • Squad size: how many units or players can join the mission.
  • Available roles: what each class, position, or specialization actually does in this game.
  • Mission objective: what the squad must accomplish, including any stated restrictions.

Then use the game’s own role descriptions to cover complementary needs. A squad’s useful composition depends on both the rules and the task; a lineup suited to one battlefield situation may not suit another. EA’s Battlefield V squad guide, for example, recommends a mix of classes and combat roles while noting that battlefield situations differ.

Choose roles that fit together

Compare each role by the job the game assigns it, how it helps with the current objective, and what trade-offs its abilities impose. Consider how it fits with the rest of the lineup rather than judging each unit in isolation. These are decision criteria, not a universal list of roles: exact names and effects vary by game.

Jumbo, Stratego - Original, Strategy Board Game, 2 Players, Ages 8 Year Plus
  • Stratego is the strategic game where you challenge your opponents in the heat of battle
  • Your task is to capture your opponent’s flag while defending your own
  • Lead your men into battle, every move is crucial
  • Includes 2 x 40 pre-printed playing pieces, Game board, Screen and 2 sorting trays for the pieces
  • Suitable for 2 players, aged 8+

Some games also use tactical systems that shape how characters behave. In EA SPORTS FC 25, player roles influence off-ball behavior, and EA advises building a squad that balances players with the tactical system. EA also describes role familiarity as a way to improve a tactic, not a requirement that makes base roles unusable. Treat familiarity as one factor alongside team cohesion rather than an automatic reason to break up a lineup that works together. These details apply to FC 25’s system, not every tactical game; see EA’s FC IQ Deep Dive.

Check how actions and resources work

A role’s apparent strengths matter only if the game lets you use them when needed. Before committing to a lineup, find out how movement, attacks, abilities, and other actions compete for turns or resources. For instance, an unofficial Zero Company beginner guide describes movement, attacks, and abilities as competing for action points. That is an example from one turn-based game, not a rule to apply elsewhere; verify the current mechanics in the game’s own documentation.

Adjust after a mission

  1. Pick a lineup for the stated objective. Use the game’s role descriptions to cover complementary needs without filling every slot with the same strength.
  2. Play the mission and note where the plan struggled. Use the game’s feedback and the task that caused trouble to identify a possible mismatch.
  3. Change one choice at a time. This makes it easier to see whether the adjustment helped, without assuming that any particular build has been tested or proven best.

Why there is no universal squad count or role list

The title does not identify a game, so a fixed headcount or named lineup would be misleading. The examples show how different the underlying systems can be: a Battlefield V squad can have up to four players, while EA SPORTS FC 25 uses football positions and player roles. Neither example establishes a general squad size or template for other games.
