What are the stories about?
Arena: a prisoner, the Staff of Chaos, and Jagar Tharn
Bethesda’s official synopsis describes a lone prisoner who must recover the shattered Staff of Chaos and save the Empire from Jagar Tharn. Arena is the series’ opening chapter, so it is the straightforward pick if you want to begin at the beginning.
Daggerfall: a murdered king and Numidium
Daggerfall’s story sends the Emperor’s champion to High Rock to address the murdered king’s haunting and ensure the ancient golem Numidium does not fall into the wrong hands. Bethesda’s official Daggerfall page summarizes the mission as putting the king’s spirit to rest and securing the golem.
Can you play them on a modern PC?
Steam: Bethesda’s free-download route
Bethesda Support’s article about the Bethesda.net Launcher sunset lists both Arena and Daggerfall among the games made available on Steam and says readers may find them on the store for free downloads. Store availability can change, so check each live listing rather than treating the support article as a permanent guarantee.

GOG: another Daggerfall option
GOG lists Daggerfall as a free Windows game powered by DOSBox. Its listing’s changelog says stability and Windows 10/11 compatibility were validated on November 13, 2024. That compatibility statement applies to GOG’s distribution, not every version or way of running the game.
Daggerfall Unity: a separate community project
Daggerfall Unity’s June 1, 2024 announcement describes an open-source recreation in the Unity engine created by Daggerfall Workshop. It supports Windows, Linux, and macOS and adds fixes, quality-of-life features, and mod support. You need the free DOS Daggerfall files for its game assets; Daggerfall Unity is not a Bethesda product or an official remaster.

What this comparison can—and cannot—settle
The clearest evidence-based comparison is about release order, story premise, access, and the available modernization route. Those facts do not establish which game is easier or better, or which has superior combat, quests, or world design. If those are your deciding factors, the official synopses and release dates alone cannot make the choice for you.
Bethesda’s studio page describes Daggerfall’s world as “the size of Great Britain,” but does not provide a measurement method there; treat that as official descriptive language, not a verified area statistic. It is not a reliable basis for choosing between the two games.
