A useful client dashboard is a small, task-focused workspace—not a second copy of the entire WordPress administration area. Start by listing exactly what each client must do, map those actions to capabilities, then expose a branded landing page with links, instructions and support details. Build it in a dedicated plugin when the workflow is bespoke; use a maintained dashboard plugin when you mainly need white-label styling, widgets, menu cleanup and redirects.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Whatever approach you choose, treat hidden menus as a usability feature rather than protection. Every page callback, form handler and REST endpoint must authorize the current user independently.

Define the client experience before writing code
Write down the few jobs the client actually performs. Typical examples include editing pages, publishing posts, viewing orders, uploading media or contacting support. Do not begin by copying the administrator dashboard and deleting items at random; that leaves clients with a confusing collection of controls and makes future maintenance harder.
Turn tasks into roles
Group clients by responsibility rather than by individual account. A content editor may need to edit pages and save drafts, while a publisher can also publish posts. A store operator may need an order-management capability supplied by the store system. Keep an administrator or support role with a reliable path to the normal WordPress tools.

Map each task to a capability
Use an existing WordPress capability whenever it accurately describes the action. Create a purpose-built capability only when the workflow has no suitable built-in permission.
| Client task | Capability approach |
|---|---|
| Edit pages | edit_pages (or the capability assigned by the page editor role) |
| Publish posts | publish_posts |
| Change site-wide settings | manage_options; normally reserved for administrators |
| Use an order screen | Use the order system’s documented capability rather than a menu-visibility rule |
| Open a product-specific client tool | Create and assign a custom capability such as a narrowly scoped workflow permission |
This map becomes the contract for your menu, page callbacks, forms and API endpoints. If a task is removed from the map, remove its link and access check together.
Choose custom code or a dashboard plugin
There are two sound architectures. A small custom plugin gives you control over a product-specific workflow and its data model. A mature dashboard plugin is usually faster when the requirement is standard white-label work: a branded welcome screen, custom widgets, menu trimming and role-based redirects.
| Decision area | Custom plugin | Dashboard plugin |
|---|---|---|
| Workflow control | Exact control over bespoke screens, data and hand-offs | Best for the features the plugin already exposes |
| Capability granularity | You define checks and can add purpose-built capabilities | Depends on the plugin’s role controls and integration points |
| Visual branding | You implement the layout and styles | Usually available through settings and widgets |
| Extensibility | Any WordPress hook or custom endpoint you need | Limited to documented hooks, templates and add-ons |
| Update burden | You own compatibility testing and fixes | The vendor maintains the feature set, but updates still require testing |
| Role restrictions | Explicit checks in every callback and request | Role controls are convenient, but must not replace server-side authorization |
| Licensing and support | No third-party license for your code; support is your responsibility | Terms, pricing and support depend on the current vendor plan |
White Label and Ultimate Dashboard are examples of the plugin approach described here. They can accelerate branding, widgets, custom top-level or submenu pages, login customization and per-role redirects. Verify current feature lists, licensing and update policy before committing a production site.
Build a custom dashboard plugin
Keep the implementation in a plugin rather than a theme. A theme can be replaced during a redesign; the client’s workflow should survive that change. The following sequence creates a minimal landing page and leaves room for widgets, forms and integrations.
1. Create a dedicated plugin file
Create a directory such as client-dashboard in wp-content/plugins, then add a PHP file with a plugin header. The plugin can be version-controlled and deployed independently of the active theme.
<?php
/**
* Plugin Name: Client Dashboard
* Description: A task-focused dashboard for client users.
* Version: 1.0.0
*/
if ( ! defined( 'ABSPATH' ) ) {
exit;
}
add_action( 'admin_menu', 'cd_register_dashboard_page' );
function cd_register_dashboard_page() {
add_menu_page(
'Client Dashboard',
'Client Dashboard',
'edit_pages',
'client-dashboard',
'cd_render_dashboard',
'dashicons-welcome-widgets-menus',
3
);
}
function cd_render_dashboard() {
if ( ! current_user_can( 'edit_pages' ) ) {
wp_die( esc_html__( 'You do not have permission to view this page.', 'client-dashboard' ), 403 );
}
?>
<div class="wrap">
<h1><?php echo esc_html__( 'Welcome to your dashboard', 'client-dashboard' ); ?></h1>
<p>Use the links below for the tasks your role allows.</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="<?php echo esc_url( admin_url( 'edit.php?post_type=page' ) ); ?>">Edit pages</a></li>
<li><a href="<?php echo esc_url( admin_url( 'post-new.php' ) ); ?>">Create a post</a></li>
</ul>
</div>
<?php
}
add_menu_page() receives a capability that determines whether WordPress includes the page in the menu. The callback must check the same (or a stricter) capability again. The menu check improves navigation; the callback check protects the page when someone types its URL directly.

2. Register in the correct administration hook
Use admin_menu for a normal site. A multisite network tool belongs on network_admin_menu and should use capabilities appropriate to network administration. Avoid registering client pages on every request outside the administration area.
3. Add subpages only for real tasks
add_submenu_page() is useful when a client has two or three related workflows. Give each subpage its own capability and callback. Do not create a submenu for every help paragraph; keep instructional material on the landing screen or in a dedicated help panel.
4. Build the landing screen around decisions
The first screen should answer three questions immediately: what can I do, where do I start and how do I get help? Include a short welcome, links to common tasks, concise text or video instructions, a support contact and the expected response time. A DPlugins tutorial published 25 September 2026 and reviewed 2 October 2026 specifically recommends removing news feeds, “At a Glance” boxes, plugin notices and other material that does not help the client.

Replace distracting dashboard widgets
WordPress’s default dashboard contains information intended for site administrators. Remove only widgets that do not support the client’s work, then add a small number of status cards or links that do.
add_action( 'wp_dashboard_setup', 'cd_customize_dashboard_widgets' );
function cd_customize_dashboard_widgets() {
remove_meta_box( 'dashboard_primary', 'dashboard', 'side' );
remove_meta_box( 'dashboard_activity', 'dashboard', 'normal' );
remove_meta_box( 'dashboard_quick_press', 'dashboard', 'side' );
wp_add_dashboard_widget(
'cd_support_widget',
'Support',
'cd_render_support_widget'
);
}
function cd_render_support_widget() {
echo '<p>Email [email protected]. Typical response: one business day.</p>';
}
Only remove widgets for users who should not see them. If administrators and support staff need the normal activity view, condition the removals with a capability check. A widget is not a security boundary: its callback and any linked destination still need authorization.
Control menu visibility without confusing it with security
Menu cleanup is valuable because it reduces cognitive load. It is not access control. Removing a menu entry does not stop a user from visiting a known URL, submitting a form or calling an endpoint.
For a client-facing role, you can remove unnecessary entries after WordPress has registered them:

Use the actual menu slug registered by the relevant component, and test after updates because a plugin can change its menu structure. Keep maintenance, recovery and update controls available to administrators or support staff. Hiding everything can make incident response slower.
Protect pages, forms and REST endpoints
Check capabilities in every callback
Every page callback should fail safely for an unauthorized user. The same applies to AJAX handlers, form processors and bulk actions. Check the capability before reading or changing protected data, not only after rendering a form.
Use nonces for state-changing forms
A nonce helps verify that a request originated from an authenticated session, but it does not grant permission. Pair it with a capability check, then sanitize and validate input before saving. Escape values at output time.
if ( ! current_user_can( 'edit_pages' ) ) {
wp_die( esc_html__( 'You are not allowed to perform this action.', 'client-dashboard' ), 403 );
}
check_admin_referer( 'cd_save_settings', 'cd_nonce' );
$title = isset( $_POST['title'] ) ? sanitize_text_field( wp_unslash( $_POST['title'] ) ) : '';
// Validate the value for the specific field before saving it.
Give REST routes their own permission callback
REST endpoints perform their own authorization checks. WordPress documentation cites capabilities such as edit_posts, edit_pages and edit_theme_options; a failed check can return a 401 or 403 response. Never assume that hiding a REST link or an admin menu protects the underlying data.

function cd_rest_summary( WP_REST_Request $request ) {

}
Return a deliberate permission error rather than leaking whether another user’s records exist. Apply the same rule to custom JavaScript requests and any endpoint supplied by an integrated system.
Design useful client content
Welcome and orientation
Use plain language that reflects the client’s role. “Publish a news post” is more useful than “Manage content.” Keep the first screen short enough to scan without scrolling through administrative notices.
Task links
Show only links the current user can use. Generate links with WordPress URL helpers and wrap each one in a capability check. A link to a page the user cannot open creates a support request even when authorization is correctly enforced.

Short tutorials
Place a brief text sequence or a short video beside the task it explains. Describe the expected result and the recovery step: for example, how to restore a draft when a publish action fails. Keep long documentation outside the dashboard and link to the exact relevant section.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Support expectations
Provide one contact method, the information to include in a request and an honest response-time expectation. The DPlugins tutorial’s guidance is practical here: a custom page with a welcome message, how-to videos and support contacts makes handover smoother and can reduce support emails.
Redirect clients after login safely
A redirect should be conditional, not global. Administrators and support staff need the normal dashboard, while a client role can go to the custom page. Confirm the user’s capability and preserve a requested destination when it is safe and authorized.
add_filter( 'login_redirect', 'cd_login_redirect', 10, 3 );
function cd_login_redirect( $redirect_to, $requested_redirect_to, $user ) {
if ( ! ( $user instanceof WP_User ) ) {
return $redirect_to;
}
if ( user_can( $user, 'manage_options' ) ) {
return $redirect_to;
}
if ( user_can( $user, 'edit_pages' ) ) {
return admin_url( 'admin.php?page=client-dashboard' );
}
return $redirect_to;
}
Do not redirect a user to a page their role cannot open. Keep a reliable route to the standard administration area for administrators, and provide support staff with a way to reproduce the client’s view without changing the client’s permissions.

- Receive updates compatible with the current WordPress version.
- Export or document settings so a replacement is possible.
Keep custom business logic in your own plugin even when a dashboard plugin supplies the shell. That separation prevents a vendor change from forcing a rewrite of data handling and authorization.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
- Log in as each client role and confirm that the intended landing page appears.
- Open every visible link and verify that it leads to a task the role can complete.
- Paste the URL of a forbidden administration page into the address bar and confirm that access is denied safely.
- Submit each state-changing form with a valid nonce, an invalid nonce and a user lacking the capability.
- Call each custom REST route as an authorized and unauthorized user; verify the expected 401 or 403 failure and that no protected data is returned.
- Check keyboard navigation, focus order, readable labels and the dashboard on a narrow mobile viewport.
- Update the dashboard and related plugins on staging, then check that unwanted widgets or menus have not returned.
- Verify that administrators can still update plugins, recover from errors and reach the normal WordPress tools.
Troubleshoot common failures
The page is missing from the menu
Check that the user has the capability passed to add_menu_page(), that registration runs on admin_menu, and that the page slug is identical in the redirect and links. In multisite, confirm that a network page was registered on network_admin_menu.
The page appears but returns “not allowed”
The callback’s capability check may be stricter than the menu capability, or the role may not have the expected custom capability. Inspect the role assignment and keep the callback check; do not remove it just to make the page render.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA hidden URL still opens
That behavior is expected when only menu entries were removed. Add a capability check to the callback, form handler or REST permission callback, then return a safe denial response.
Clients are sent to a blank or looping redirect
Make the redirect conditional on a real capability, return the original destination for administrators, and ensure the target page is registered before login redirects run. Test with a user who has no client capability as well as with a normal client.
A plugin update restores clutter
Recheck widget IDs and menu slugs after the update, move your cleanup code to a late priority where necessary, and keep an automated staging smoke test for the client role.
Deployment and maintenance
Deploy the dashboard plugin through the same controlled process as other production code. Keep a copy of the capability map, role assignments and redirect rules with the project documentation. When a client workflow changes, update the task links, authorization checks and instructions together.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Review the dashboard whenever WordPress, the editor, an order system or a white-label plugin is updated. A visual change may be harmless, while a capability or endpoint change can alter who can perform an action. Test the handoff again before declaring the update complete.
Make the decision
Use a custom plugin when the dashboard is part of a product-specific workflow, must integrate with bespoke data or needs capability rules that a generic interface cannot express. Use a mature dashboard plugin when speed, branding, widgets, menu trimming and standard redirects are the main objectives. In both cases, the professional result is the same: a short list of useful tasks, clear guidance, preserved administrator access and authorization enforced on every request.
