Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStart with a hard budget for the complete, ready-to-play setup—not just a PC tower or console. List what you already own, identify what is genuinely missing, then spend first on game performance, compatibility and comfort. RGB lighting, brand-matched gear and premium accessories can wait.
Set the total budget before choosing hardware
Decide the maximum you can spend on everything needed to play, including applicable tax and shipping. Inventory your current equipment before shopping: a display, keyboard, mouse, headphones or speakers may already do the job. For a desktop PC, Intel recommends accounting for the display and input devices, and notes that compatible older peripherals can be reused: Intel’s guide to building a gaming PC.
Make a short list with three columns: already have, must buy, and optional later. This prevents a tower-only price from masquerading as the cost of a complete setup. It also makes it easier to reserve money for any essential item you have overlooked, such as a display or operating system.
Choose games and a performance target first
Write down the games you expect to play and what matters most: resolution, smoothness, competitive responsiveness, or simply being able to run the games comfortably. For PC, check the official system requirements for those games and confirm that planned components work together before buying. Intel’s PC-building guide covers requirements and compatibility planning.

Prioritize a balanced system capable of the target, rather than overspending on one standout component while neglecting the rest. Intel advises giving CPU and GPU performance priority while avoiding an imbalanced build: Intel’s budgeting advice. Exact component choices depend on the games, target performance, and prices available in your market; there is no universally correct parts list for every budget.
Compare PC and console by the whole setup
Neither platform is automatically the cheaper choice for everyone. Compare the cost and convenience of the complete setup, alongside the games you want, available space, and whether you already own useful equipment. A console package may include a controller; a PC commonly requires separate display and input devices. TechRadar discusses these practical differences in its PC-versus-console guide.

| Factor | PC | Console |
|---|---|---|
| Games | Check the requirements for the specific games you want. | Check that the games you want are available on the console you choose. |
| What may be included | A tower or laptop price does not necessarily include a display, keyboard, mouse or audio gear. | A package may include a controller; check the exact package contents. |
| Upgrade options | Some desktops allow later upgrades, but compatibility and upgrade options depend on the exact system. | Do not assume PC-style component upgrades; compare the console’s included capabilities and your intended use. |
| Total cost | Add any missing peripherals and other required items to the computer cost. | Add any missing display, audio or other required items to the console cost. |
For a PC, decide whether to build or buy a prebuilt based on convenience, access to parts and the exact configuration. Building gives you more control over component selection, but requires compatibility checks. A prebuilt can be a sensible route when sourcing individual parts is difficult; compare its actual specifications, price and availability rather than assuming every prebuilt is good value. See TechRadar’s platform guide and Intel’s build-planning guidance.
Match the display to what your system can use
A monitor’s resolution and refresh rate matter only insofar as they suit the computer and the games you play. If your target is 1080p gaming, prioritize a suitable 1080p display over paying extra for specifications the system cannot make useful. Intel recommends keeping the target resolution in view when balancing the display against CPU and GPU spending: Intel’s budget guide.

Test the gear you own for compatibility, condition and comfort. A basic keyboard and mouse, headphones or speakers can be enough; they do not need to match the computer’s brand or appearance. Intel says compatible older keyboards and mice may work well and that peripherals can be upgraded later: Intel’s guide.

Keep cosmetic extras at the end of the list
RGB lighting, coordinated accessories and decorative upgrades are personal choices, not requirements for playing games. Intel’s budget guide puts it plainly: “Though lighting and flair can add a level of customization to your system, it’s unrelated to the performance of the hardware inside, and can sometimes add cost.” If you enjoy the look, include it only after you have budgeted for the components and peripherals you actually need.
Quick Recap
A practical order for spending
- Set the ceiling: Count the entire ready-to-play setup, including relevant tax and shipping.
- Name the games and target: Define the performance you want, then check official game requirements.
- Choose the platform: Compare games, space, existing gear and total setup cost—not just a console price against a PC tower price.
- Inventory what works: Reuse compatible displays, controllers, keyboards, mice and audio gear where practical.
- Plan core hardware: For PC, check compatibility and aim for a balanced system suited to the target.
- Match the display: Pay for resolution and refresh-rate capability that fits the machine and games.
