That combination makes it harder for approaching mobs to reach you and reduces ordinary hostile mob spawning in dark spots. It is practical Overworld survival advice, not a guarantee against every mob or version-specific mechanic.
Build a closed shelter first
Choose a spot and make a compact perimeter of solid blocks, then cover it with a roof. Minecraft’s first-night guidance recommends putting blocks between you and mobs; an enclosed space is easier to manage than open terrain. Check for gaps in the walls and roof so mobs cannot simply walk or drop inside.
Keep the entrance controlled
Leave one entrance and close it after entering. A door is a convenient option, but the general shelter principle does not mean every door defeats every mob or mechanic. Avoid leaving an open passage while you wait out the night.
Light the house and nearby dark areas
Place torches or other available light sources around the interior, paying particular attention to corners and sections that remain dark. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.18 release notes say: “Monsters now only spawn in places where the light from blocks is 0 (sky light still prevents spawning like before).” That is a versioned Java statement, not a universal rule for every later exception or dimension.

Light the ground immediately outside the house where practical, and check nearby caves, tunnels, and other dark spaces. The official first-night guidance recommends torches and notes that dark caves and tunnels can remain dangerous. There is no single placement interval that applies to every light source and layout, so inspect the actual dark spots rather than relying on a fixed spacing rule.
Use a fence perimeter carefully
A fence can add a useful barrier around the house. Minecraft’s fence guidance says players and mobs cannot jump over fences unless they have Jump Boost. However, Bedrock Edition 1.18.30 release notes warn that mobs can jump over fences when standing on an adjacent slab or another sufficiently high block. Keep nearby surfaces low or leave enough separation that they cannot serve as a step over the fence.

Why daylight is not enough
Many Overworld mobs, including zombies and skeletons, burn in sunlight, but daylight does not protect you from every threat. Mobs can still approach at night, and dark caves or tunnels can remain hazardous. A roofed, enclosed shelter and lit surroundings are more dependable than waiting for sunrise in the open.

A closed, lit house addresses two different risks: walls and a roof obstruct access, while light reduces ordinary natural hostile spawning in dark areas under the cited rules. These measures do not, by themselves, account for every way a mob might enter, a spawner, a special event, or a version-specific mechanic. If something appears inside, check for an opening and for dark interior blocks, then account for the mob and game version involved.

Mojang’s Bedrock 1.18.0 notes say monsters spawn only in complete darkness and that players can spawn-proof dark areas using light sources. Bedrock 1.18.30 separately states: “Drowned can no longer spawn where the block light level is above 0 (MCPE-150148).” These are release-specific notes; exact behavior can vary by edition, version, mob, and spawning context.
