How to Build a Multiplayer Browser Game with WebSockets

A practical implementation path for browser multiplayer: use WebSockets for client-server communication, keep important game decisions on the server, and plan for validation, disconnects, and buffering.

Build a multiplayer browser game around a server that owns the shared game state. Each browser sends player inputs over a WebSocket; the server checks whether those inputs are valid, updates the room, and sends useful state changes to its players. WebSockets provide the two-way connection, not the game rules, rooms, matchmaking, authentication, or protection against cheating.

Start with one small playable loop and one authoritative server. Add a defined message protocol, explicit connection and room behavior, and deployment safeguards before expanding the game.

How do I make a multiplayer browser game?

First decide what players can do and what the server must decide. A multiplayer game needs more than a persistent connection: it needs rules for joining a session, identifying players, accepting actions, changing shared state, and ending or leaving a session.

Define the smallest playable loop

Write down the minimum sequence that makes the game playable from start to finish. For example: a player creates or joins a room, performs a legal action, sees the shared result, and either wins, loses, or leaves. Decide what happens when another player joins mid-session and what the game does when someone disconnects. These choices determine what your server must track and what your browser clients need to display.

Before choosing message formats, specify:

  • How a room is created and joined, and whether it has a player limit.
  • How the application identifies a player and checks permission to act in a room.
  • Which actions are legal, and under what game-state conditions.
  • Which state changes matter to every player and which are private to one player.
  • How the game ends, how players leave, and whether a disconnected player can return.

Keep the first version narrow. A single room flow and a small set of legal actions are easier to validate than a protocol designed for features the game does not yet need.

Choose a client-server design

For a first implementation, use a browser client and a game server. The client sends intent—such as a move or an interaction request—rather than treating its own claims about score, position, or victory as authoritative. The server checks the request against the player’s room membership and current game state, applies legal changes, and distributes the result to the relevant players.

This is an architectural recommendation, not a feature that WebSockets enforce. A browser can send arbitrary messages; the server must decide what those messages are allowed to do.

How do WebSockets fit into a multiplayer game?

A WebSocket is a two-way communication channel between a browser and a server. After the connection is established, either side can send messages without the client repeatedly polling for a reply. The browser’s standard WebSocket API exposes connection lifecycle events including open, message, error, and close.

Think of WebSockets as the transport for your game protocol. Your application still has to define message meaning, room membership, validation, state updates, and recovery behavior. A connection alone does not create a shared session or make the game secure, authoritative, low-latency, or scalable.

Build a small, explicit protocol

Choose a short list of message types and document who may send each one, what fields it requires, and what the server sends in response. A version field can help clients and servers detect incompatible message formats as the game changes. The following JSON is an illustrative protocol design, not a standard imposed by WebSockets:

{"type":"join","version":1,"roomId":"room-42"}
{"type":"input","version":1,"action":"move","direction":"left"}
{"type":"state","version":1,"roomId":"room-42","players":[],"turn":7}
{"type":"error","version":1,"code":"invalid_action"}

Keep the payloads focused on what the receiver needs. For an input, that is usually the requested action and its relevant parameters—not a client-authored replacement for the complete game state. For a state update, send enough information for clients to render the shared result without treating a client’s earlier prediction as proof that the server accepted an action.

Set limits for message size and input frequency. Reject malformed messages and unknown message types rather than trying to interpret them loosely. The exact schema, limits, and rate controls depend on the game; there is no universal protocol or threshold in the WebSocket API.

What should the server own?

Put consequential game decisions on the server. The browser can collect input and render the game, but the server should check whether an action is legal for that player in that room at that point in the game. It then applies the rule and sends the resulting state to the appropriate clients.

Validate every action against context

Validation should cover more than whether a message parses. Check that the player is a member of the room, that the game is in a state where the action is allowed, and that the action’s parameters are acceptable for the game’s rules. A syntactically valid request can still be unauthorized or out of turn.

Do not accept client assertions such as “my score is now 10” or “I won” as the outcome itself. Treat client messages as requests or inputs; calculate or verify important state changes on the server. This reduces reliance on claims made by an untrusted client, but it is a design choice you must implement rather than a protection supplied by the transport.

Separate shared and private information

Decide which players should receive each update. A room-wide change may be sent to every active player in the room, while information intended for one player should not be included in a shared broadcast. Make this distinction part of the protocol and server logic; sending the same complete state to everyone is not automatically appropriate.

How should rooms and connection lifecycle work?

Keep a server-side association between each active connection, its player identity, and its room membership. On a join request, authenticate the player through the application’s chosen mechanism, check that the room can accept them, then add them to the room. Do not let a message’s claimed room or player identity substitute for server-side checks.

Handle disconnects deliberately

When a connection closes, remove it from active connection tracking and apply the game’s chosen room policy. A casual turn-based game may preserve a player’s place temporarily; another game may end or reassign the session. WebSockets do not define reconnection behavior, so choose whether players may reconnect, how the server recognizes them, and what happens to the room while they are away.

Make room cleanup explicit. Decide when an empty room is discarded and what happens to any game state it contains. Test close and error paths as well as the successful join path; otherwise, stale membership can affect later actions or leave a room in a state the game cannot recover from.

Do not assume every message reaches every client promptly

The standard WebSocket API does not provide backpressure. If messages arrive faster than a client can process them, buffering can grow and the client may become unresponsive. Avoid sending updates more often or with more detail than the game needs. Rate-limit or coalesce updates where appropriate, and monitor whether queued messages are growing rather than being handled.

For example, a game may not need to broadcast every intermediate server-side change if a newer update makes an older one obsolete. The right update strategy depends on the game’s rules and display needs; preserve events that matter to gameplay instead of indiscriminately dropping them.

How do I connect the browser client?

Have the browser create a WebSocket connection to the game server’s endpoint, then register handlers for its lifecycle and incoming messages. The order of handling matters: do not try to join a room until the connection is open, and do not treat a sent input as accepted until the server communicates the result through the protocol.

  1. Open the connection. Construct a WebSocket for the server endpoint used by the deployed game.
  2. Wait for open. Once connected, send the application’s join message and any required session credentials through the authentication mechanism you selected.
  3. Handle message. Parse each message, validate its type and expected fields on the client, and update the interface according to server-confirmed state.
  4. Handle error and close. Show a useful connection state and follow the game’s reconnect or leave policy instead of silently assuming the session remains active.
  5. On player input, send intent. Send a defined action message; let the server validate and apply it before treating the resulting shared state as final.

The browser should be prepared for connection failure and closure at any point. The game’s presentation can show that a player is reconnecting or disconnected, but the server remains responsible for deciding whether that player still has a valid place in the room.

How do I secure the handshake and room actions?

The WebSocket handshake begins as an HTTP request and negotiates the connection. That starting point does not make a WebSocket endpoint safe by itself. Use secure WebSocket transport (wss) for a production browser deployment, and configure any reverse proxy in front of the server to preserve the WebSocket upgrade.

Authentication is not an Origin check

MDN cautions that servers must carefully interpret what clients request and notes that non-browser clients can fake an Origin header. Checking an expected origin can be one browser-origin control, but it is not proof of a user’s identity and does not authorize room actions. Authenticate users through an appropriate application mechanism, then authorize each room action on the server.

Validate at the server boundary

  • Check message type, schema, and size before processing a message.
  • Limit input frequency so a client cannot overwhelm the game loop with requests.
  • Verify room membership and whether the action is legal in the current state.
  • Set connection and payload limits in the server and deployment path.
  • Test the full deployed path, including the reverse proxy, rather than only a local connection.

These checks address different failure modes. A well-formed message can be unauthorized; an authenticated player can send an illegal action; and a valid action can still contribute to excessive traffic if the server accepts it without suitable limits.

How should I deploy and test the game?

Serve the browser game and expose a WebSocket endpoint through the production path. Use wss for the browser connection in production. If a reverse proxy sits between the browser and game server, confirm that it preserves the WebSocket upgrade rather than treating the request as an ordinary short-lived HTTP exchange.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test behaviors that affect a real session, not only whether two browsers can connect. A practical test plan includes:

  • A player joins a valid room, and another player sees the expected shared state.
  • A malformed message, unknown message type, or illegal action is rejected without corrupting the room.
  • A player attempts an action without the required room membership or at the wrong game-state moment.
  • A client closes its connection during a session, and the server applies the documented leave or reconnect behavior.
  • Clients receive updates through the same proxy and secure transport configuration intended for deployment.
  • Update traffic is observed under realistic play so excessive buffering or client unresponsiveness can be identified.

There is no single server, proxy, connection limit, or update frequency specified by the WebSocket API for every game. Choose these according to the game’s workload and the hosting environment, then test the actual deployment configuration.

Should I use WebSockets or WebRTC for a browser game?

WebSockets are a straightforward default when a server needs to validate actions and distribute shared state. WebRTC supports peer-to-peer exchange of arbitrary data between browsers; MDN’s example uses a WebSocket connection as the signaling channel. That means the choice is about topology and trust as well as transport: a peer-to-peer design changes how players discover one another and which participant, if any, can be trusted to coordinate the game.

Design question WebSocket client-server WebRTC peer-to-peer
Where do browser messages go? Between each browser and a server. Between browsers using peer-to-peer data channels.
How can players be connected? The server can coordinate room membership and distribute shared state. Peers need a way to discover and establish connections; a WebSocket can be used for signaling.
Who validates shared game rules? A server can own the authoritative state and validate inputs. The topology changes who can coordinate or be trusted; peer-to-peer transport does not establish an authoritative game state by itself.

This comparison is architectural, not a universal performance result. For competitive real-time play, evaluate latency, jitter, and loss under the game’s actual conditions. A 2025 research paper compares WebSockets, WebRTC, and WebTransport using those network-quality dimensions, but the evidence here does not establish a transport winner or a benchmark that applies to every workload.

What is the simplest sound implementation path?

  1. Write the playable loop. Define room entry, identity, legal actions, state transitions, and win or leave conditions.
  2. Build the server endpoint. Serve the game and establish a browser WebSocket connection with handlers for open, message, error, and close.
  3. Specify the protocol. Define a few explicit message types, version payloads as needed, and choose message-size and input-frequency limits.
  4. Keep authority on the server. Treat client messages as requests, validate membership and game state, and apply important decisions server-side.
  5. Send useful updates. Deliver compact state to the appropriate players; avoid uncontrolled update rates and monitor for buffering problems.
  6. Define lifecycle behavior. Decide what disconnects, reconnections, empty rooms, and cleanup mean in this game.
  7. Deploy and verify the real path. Use wss, preserve the WebSocket upgrade through any proxy, set connection and payload limits, and test behavior through that path.

This sequence keeps the first version focused: a working shared game loop, an explicit protocol, server-validated actions, and predictable handling of connection changes. Add more complex networking or peer-to-peer features only when the game’s topology and trust requirements justify them.
