Choose pieces for their immediate contribution and their overlap with plausible future plans, then reassess after each round. “Deck” here means an in-match team or board—not a constructed card deck with an opening hand.
First, identify what “deckbuilding” means in your game
Autobattlers do not all use the same drafting system. Teamfight Tactics (TFT) has players draft champions from a shared pool, manage an economy, equip items, and position a team. Hearthstone Battlegrounds instead has recruitment phases in which a minion board evolves between automatic combats. Both ask you to make repeated choices under uncertainty, but their currencies and rules differ. Riot’s TFT overview describes several possible strategies rather than one winning formula; Blizzard’s Battlegrounds introduction explains its recruit-and-combat structure.

Choose a useful board now, not a hoped-for board later
When comparing an available unit with a piece you hope to find later, start with what each one does immediately. A unit that contributes to the current fight can buy time and help you avoid committing to a speculative plan. Several individually weak pieces are a risky early investment if their value depends on completing a synergy that may not arrive.
This is a decision principle, not a universal rule to ignore synergies. Riot’s TFT design guidance treats knowledge of interlocking traits and the ability to adapt to the champions appearing in the draft as complementary skills. Compare candidates across six practical questions
- Immediate contribution: Does this unit make the current board more capable, or is its value mostly conditional on a future draw?
- Existing overlap: Does it strengthen a trait, effect, or role already represented among your current pieces?
- Currency cost: What else could the same spend enable—another purchase, a refresh, an upgrade, or a saved resource, where the game allows saving?
- Future flexibility: Does this pick leave more than one credible composition path open, or force you to chase a narrow set of pieces?
- Equipment fit: If the game offers items or equipment, does the unit make useful use of what you already have or can reasonably build toward?
- Board arrangement: Will its position, attack order, or interaction with other units change how well it performs?
These questions are a practical way to apply the games’ documented mechanics and strategic principles, not a tested scoring formula. No single factor should override the whole board: a synergy bonus may be worthwhile, but it does not automatically compensate for a weak unit, an expensive detour, or a poor position.
Keep the economy attached to every decision
A purchase is not just a unit choice; it is also a decision about what you will not be able to do with that currency. Account for the next likely options before spending on a refresh or an upgrade. In TFT, Riot explicitly includes gold income and economy management among the game’s core considerations in its game overview.

In Battlegrounds, Blizzard’s 2019 introduction describes choices such as buying, refreshing, selling, freezing, and upgrading the Tavern, and explains that Tavern tier affects the strength of offers. It also says coins cannot be saved for future rounds. Those are details from an older introduction, not confirmation of current costs or rules; use the live in-game information for the version you are playing. The general lesson is to weigh a shop action against its alternatives rather than refreshing or upgrading automatically.
A simple spend check
- Name the immediate problem. Is the current board missing useful combat contribution, a needed role, or a stronger option for a future path?
- Identify the best available fix. Compare the units and actions actually offered with what you already hold; do not spend as though an expected piece is guaranteed to appear.
- Price the opportunity cost. Consider what a purchase, refresh, or upgrade displaces under the rules of this specific game.
- Act only if the improvement is worth that cost. A refresh is not valuable merely because the current offers are imperfect; an upgrade is not valuable merely because it is available.
Build around overlap, then revisit the plan each round
A flexible board has a direction without requiring every early pick to fit one final composition. Look for additions that improve the present team and connect to a plausible next step. If the expected pieces do not appear, adjust rather than paying repeatedly to rescue the original idea.

After each new offer or round, take stock of three things: what the pool is providing, what your current team can use, and what your remaining resources can still support. Where the game reveals opponent boards or strategies, include those signals too. Riot’s design guidance identifies awareness of available champions and opponent strategies, including counter-building, as parts of TFT mastery; how much information is visible depends on the game and its current rules.
Use a recurring decision loop
- Read the board and offers. Note which current pieces are contributing and what useful additions are actually available.
- Check whether your plan still fits. Keep the current direction if new options support it; loosen or change it if continuing would require increasingly unlikely pieces.
- Compare the next action with its alternatives. Decide whether buying, refreshing, upgrading, or another game-specific action best improves the situation for its cost.
- Rearrange if needed. Account for the game’s placement rules and the roles or effects of the units you field.
- Repeat after the next update. Treat the plan as provisional, not as a commitment made once at the start.
Make the whole board work, including its placement
In automatic combat, a good collection of units can still be undermined by how they are arranged. Consider attack order, durability, and effects that depend on position—but do not carry one game’s placement rules over to another.

For example, Blizzard’s 2019 Battlegrounds introduction describes left-side minions attacking first and discusses arranging around Taunt and effects such as Poisonous, Deathrattle, and Divine Shield. That is a game-specific account, and current mechanics may differ. Check the live rules and the text shown in your game before relying on an exact tactical interaction.

Constructed Hearthstone has a different early-game problem: you bring a fixed deck and choose which opening-hand cards to keep or replace. Blizzard’s constructed advice distinguishes aggressive spending, tempo plays for board presence and removal, and control plans that may trade early life for card advantage and later stabilization. Its mulligan guide also says opening-hand choices depend on deck style and opponent. Those are useful distinctions within constructed Hearthstone, not rules for choosing units from an autobattler shop.

Blizzard’s article “Opening Moves: Those First 5 Turns” quotes Hearthstone strategy contributor David “shoop” Steinberg: “Evaluate the game state. If you’re in danger of falling behind, play ambitiously and take risks; if you’re ahead, focus on denying options for your opponent.” The advice belongs to its Hearthstone context, but the underlying habit—judging the current situation before choosing a risk level—can inform an autobattler decision without making its card-specific tactics transferable.
Check the current set or rules before following a fixed list
There is no dependable universal early team across games, sets, or patches. TFT compositions and available champions change between sets, and Riot’s guidance favors responding to the draft rather than forcing one plan. The official sources cited here explain fundamentals, but they do not establish current balance, costs, best-in-slot units, or a universally reliable composition. Use the current in-game pool and rules for the version you are playing, then apply the decision process above.
