How to Build a Simple AI Game with Google AI Studio

By VGSources Team 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can build a small playable browser game in Google AI Studio by describing the game in Build mode, checking the generated live preview, and refining one behavior at a time. You do not need to make the game call an AI model while it is being played: Gemini can help create and revise the application, while the finished game can run entirely in the browser.

The reliable beginner workflow is deliberately small. Define one repeatable game loop, ask Build mode for a self-contained first version, test the preview on the devices you care about, then add movement, collision, scoring, timing, and presentation as separate changes. Treat generated code as a starting point that must be inspected and tested, not as proof that every rule works.

Decide what “AI game” means before you build

The phrase can describe two different projects:

Approach What AI Studio does What the player experiences Extra complexity
AI-assisted creation Gemini generates the React application, server files, styling, and revisions from your prompts. The game follows ordinary local code and does not need a model call during play. Low. This is the best starting point for a simple game.
AI at runtime The application sends requests to Gemini while it runs, such as for hints, dialogue, or a new story beat. Some game content changes in response to a model. Higher. You must protect a key, handle latency and errors, and account for usage limits or charges.

Start with the first approach. Add a runtime feature only when it improves the game rather than because the title contains the word AI. A falling-object game, maze, reaction test, or short branching story can be fully playable without a model request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a game loop small enough to finish

A first prototype should have one action that repeats and one clear way to measure success. If you cannot describe the loop in one sentence, the scope is probably too large for a first Build mode request.

Useful first-game patterns

  • Catch: move horizontally, catch falling objects, and increase the score.
  • Dodge: move a character around hazards until a timer expires.
  • Click: select targets before they disappear, with a countdown and a final score.
  • Maze: move from a start point to an exit while avoiding walls.
  • Choice story: select one of a few options and reach an ending.

Write a short design brief

Before opening Build mode, decide these five items:

  1. Core loop: state the repeated action and its objective in one sentence.
  2. Input: name keyboard keys, pointer actions, touch gestures, or a combination.
  3. Success and failure: define the win condition, loss condition, or time limit.
  4. State changes: specify score, lives, levels, timer, or a restart rule.
  5. Visual direction: choose a simple style such as colored shapes, pixel-like blocks, or a dark neon interface.

For a first build, prefer shapes and CSS over a large asset pipeline. A self-contained prototype is easier to inspect, export, and repair than one that depends on many external files.

Create the first app in Build mode

Open Google AI Studio and choose its Build mode. Build mode accepts a natural-language description, generates project files, and shows a live preview. Web apps are the default; the documented setup uses a React frontend and a Node.js server runtime. You can continue prompting, edit files directly, and use annotation mode to request changes to a specific part of the interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a complete first prompt

Your opening request should specify the playable loop rather than asking vaguely for “a fun game.” This example is an illustration of a useful brief, not a tested game result:

Build a small single-player browser game where the player moves a character left and right to catch falling stars. Add keyboard controls, a score, a 30-second timer, a start screen, and a restart button. Use simple shapes and make the game playable on desktop and mobile. Show the code and keep the first version self-contained.

The request gives Build mode an objective, controls, end conditions, interface states, and a visual constraint. It also asks for a version that is understandable before you add services or large assets.

Read the generated project before adding features

When the preview appears, identify the main screen component, the game-state variables, the update loop or timer, input handlers, and any server files. You do not need to understand every generated line immediately. You do need to know where movement, collision, scoring, and restart behavior live so that later prompts have a precise target.

Test the first preview immediately

Click Start, use every advertised control, wait for the timer to end, deliberately miss an object, and press Restart. Check whether the preview actually shows a playable state rather than only a polished screen. Keep a short defect list such as “left movement works, right movement is too fast, score never changes, restart leaves the timer running.” That list becomes your next prompt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Iterate one behavior at a time

Short, isolated requests make generated changes easier to verify. Ask for movement first, then collision, then scoring, instead of requesting ten systems in one message.

Movement prompt

Fix the player movement in the existing game. Use the left and right arrow keys and A/D keys, clamp the player inside the play area, and keep the same start screen and visual style. Do not change scoring yet.

Collision prompt

Add collision detection between the player and falling stars. When a star is caught, remove it and spawn another one. Leave the timer and score display unchanged for this step.

Scoring prompt

Increase the score by one only when a falling star overlaps the player. Show the score in the existing HUD and reset it when Restart is pressed. Do not alter movement.

Timer and ending prompt

Add a 30-second countdown that starts when the player starts the game, stops at zero, disables gameplay input, and shows a game-over panel with the final score and a Restart button.

After each change, refresh the preview and repeat the same test. If a request fixes one defect but creates another, tell Build mode exactly what regressed and ask for a minimal correction instead of restarting the project.

Use annotation mode and direct code edits strategically

Annotation mode lets you point at a visible element and request a UI change in context. It is useful for requests such as “move the timer above the play area,” “make the restart button easier to see,” or “increase the contrast of this score label.” Use it for presentation changes that are visible in the preview.

Use direct editing when the required change is deterministic and local, such as changing a constant, correcting a label, or adjusting a CSS value. Before editing, note whether the value is also used by the timer, collision boundary, or responsive layout. A one-line change to canvas dimensions can affect several systems.

Keep a working version after every meaningful milestone. If the interface provides project history, use it; otherwise export a ZIP or sync to GitHub before a risky refactor. A known-good checkpoint is more useful than a long conversation that no longer produces a runnable preview.

Inspect the generated game logic

Generated code can look plausible while containing subtle game-state bugs. Check the following systems separately.

State and lifecycle

  • There is a clear distinction between start, playing, paused or ended, and restart states.
  • The score, timer, player position, and object list are reset deliberately rather than left from the previous round.
  • A game loop or interval is stopped when the game ends, so old callbacks cannot continue changing state.
  • Starting the game twice does not create two timers or two animation loops.

Input

  • Keyboard listeners are removed when the component unmounts or the game ends.
  • Arrow keys do not scroll the page while the game is active if that would interfere with play.
  • Touch or pointer controls have a clear target size and do not require precise dragging unless the design calls for it.
  • Movement is bounded by the actual play area on both desktop and narrow screens.

Collision and scoring

  • A caught object is removed once, preventing duplicate points from one overlap.
  • Objects that leave the bottom of the play area are discarded or handled as misses.
  • Collision checks use the current positions, not stale values from the previous frame.
  • Score changes occur only in the intended event, such as a successful catch.

Timing

  • The countdown reaches zero cleanly and cannot become negative on screen.
  • The displayed time and the actual end condition use the same clock.
  • Slow devices do not make movement or falling speed wildly different because of an uncontrolled frame-rate assumption.

Make the prompt produce a maintainable prototype

Ask for simple structure as well as features. A useful maintenance request is:

Refactor the existing game without changing its behavior. Put game constants such as play-area size, fall speed, round duration, and spawn interval together. Keep rendering, input handling, collision checks, and score updates in clearly named functions or components. Add brief comments only where the logic is non-obvious.

Centralized constants let you tune difficulty without searching through unrelated code. Named functions also make later prompts more precise: you can ask to change the spawn interval without asking the model to reinterpret the entire application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the preview like a player

Run a repeatable test pass after each feature. Use a checklist rather than relying on whether the screen “looks right.”

  1. Load the app from a fresh preview.
  2. Confirm the start screen explains the controls and has a working Start action.
  3. Test every movement input, including the alternate keys you requested.
  4. Verify the player cannot leave the play area.
  5. Catch one object and confirm exactly one point is awarded.
  6. Miss objects and check the intended miss behavior.
  7. Wait for the timer to reach zero and verify that input and scoring stop.
  8. Press Restart and confirm all state returns to its initial values.
  9. Resize the browser to a narrow width and test touch or pointer controls if promised.
  10. Reload the page and check that a stale timer or event listener is not still active.

Common symptoms and focused fixes

Symptom Likely cause Focused request
The game speeds up after every restart. Each restart creates another interval or animation loop. “Ensure Restart clears the existing timer or animation handle before starting a new one.”
One catch gives several points. The object remains in the list for multiple frames. “Remove a caught object immediately and ensure scoring runs once per object.”
The timer reaches zero but objects keep moving. The update loop ignores the ended state. “Stop updates and input when the round state becomes game over.”
The player disappears on a phone-sized window. Fixed coordinates are not scaled or clamped to the responsive play area. “Use the measured play-area bounds for rendering and movement on narrow screens.”
Restart shows the old score. Only the visual screen changed; the score variable was not reset. “Reset score, timer, player position, and active objects in one restart function.”

If a generated fix is broader than the defect, save your last working version and undo the change. A smaller prompt with the symptom, expected result, and constraint usually produces a safer revision.

Add Gemini features inside the game only when they earn their complexity

A runtime model can make a small game more interesting, but it introduces a network dependency. Suitable additions include a hint after a player fails, a short generated description for a level, or a limited set of story variations. Keep the core controls and win condition local so the game remains playable when a request is slow or unavailable.

Keep credentials on the server

Build mode supports a server-side Node.js runtime, packages, and server-side secrets. For an app that calls Gemini, place the key in the platform’s Secrets manager and read it from server code. Do not put a key in a React component, browser bundle, visible configuration file, or prompt that is sent to the client. The documented full-stack pattern is designed to keep sensitive values out of client-side code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for failure and usage

  • Show a local fallback message if the model request times out or fails.
  • Limit how often a player can request a hint or generated scene.
  • Validate model output before inserting it into the interface or game state.
  • Keep prompts short and constrain output length for predictable behavior.
  • Check the current model, account, and platform terms before release: app calls count toward usage limits, paid models can create charges, and limits can change.

Do not quote a fixed price or quota unless you have checked the current official settings for your account and selected model. The cost of a runtime feature depends on those choices and on how often players trigger it.

Consider multiplayer only after the single-player loop works

Multiplayer changes the problem from local animation to shared state. You need an authoritative place for player positions or events, connection handling, synchronization rules, and a response when a player disconnects. That is a different milestone from adding another sprite to a single-player screen.

Google’s full-stack guide demonstrates the kind of request you can make: Make this a multiplayer game where players can see each other’s cursors. Treat that as an example of a supported direction, not a promise that every multiplayer design will work without debugging. Test with multiple browser tabs or shared app access, then inspect whether each client receives consistent state.

For a first multiplayer experiment, synchronize a low-stakes element such as cursor positions rather than scores, inventory, or combat. Keep the single-player mode available while you verify connection and state behavior.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Option Best for What to expect Cost and risk considerations
Live preview Fast iteration and debugging. Run the generated app in AI Studio while you change prompts or code. Ideal for development; do not assume preview behavior equals a production deployment.
Share the app Getting feedback from another person. Depending on the sharing settings, others may be able to view or fork the app and its code. Review what is exposed and remember that API calls still count toward applicable usage limits.
GitHub sync Version control and collaboration. Keep the generated project in a repository and continue local or team development. Check that secrets are excluded from the repository and review generated files before sharing.
ZIP export Local development or archiving. Download the generated files and run or modify them outside AI Studio. You become responsible for local runtime setup, dependency versions, and secret handling.
Cloud Run deployment Making a server-backed app available on the web. Deploy the application through Google’s Cloud Run path after preparing the project. Usage-based Cloud Run charges may apply, in addition to any model usage. Check current pricing and settings before publishing.

Sharing a preview is not the same as operating a public production service. Decide whether you need a feedback link, a downloadable codebase, or a maintained public URL, and choose the least complicated option that meets that need.

Use the Gemini prompt workflow when you are ready to code locally

The Gemini API quickstart describes a separate path: prototype a prompt, and when it behaves as desired, use Get code to begin integrating it into an application or save and share the prompt. This is useful for a runtime hint, dialogue generator, or level-description service.

Do not confuse that prompt workflow with Build mode’s application generation. Build mode creates and revises a project with a live web preview; Get code helps you carry a satisfactory model interaction into your own code. You may use both, but keep their responsibilities clear: Build mode shapes the game application, while the API workflow helps you implement a deliberate model call.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the game for someone else to play

Before sharing a link or deploying, complete a release pass that is separate from feature development.

Player-facing checks

  • The first screen states the objective and controls without requiring the player to inspect source code.
  • Buttons have visible hover, focus, and disabled states where appropriate.
  • Text remains readable on a narrow viewport and does not overlap the play area.
  • There is a clear way to restart after success, failure, or a stalled request.
  • The game does not depend on a hidden developer console message to explain an error.

Technical checks

  • No API key, token, or private endpoint appears in client-side source.
  • Secrets are configured through the server-side secrets mechanism rather than hardcoded.
  • Runtime model calls have timeouts, error handling, and sensible request limits.
  • Any external package is necessary, installed correctly, and compatible with the chosen runtime.
  • The exported or synchronized project contains the files needed to reproduce the build.
  • You have reviewed current usage limits, model availability, and deployment charges for the account and region you will use.

A practical build sequence

For most beginners, this order keeps failures easy to isolate:

  1. Write the one-sentence loop and five-item design brief.
  2. Generate a self-contained web app in Build mode.
  3. Verify that Start, controls, one success event, game over, and Restart work.
  4. Fix movement boundaries and input handling.
  5. Add collision and score updates.
  6. Add the timer, end state, and reset logic.
  7. Improve layout and accessibility with annotation mode or small CSS edits.
  8. Test desktop and mobile-sized views from a clean reload.
  9. Save a known-good copy through GitHub sync or ZIP export.
  10. Only then consider a Gemini-powered feature, multiplayer state, or Cloud Run deployment.

This sequence keeps the essential game independent from optional infrastructure. If a later experiment fails, you can remove it without losing the playable core.

What success looks like

A successful first project is not the one with the longest prompt or the most generated files. It is a small game that starts reliably, accepts the advertised input, applies its rules consistently, ends in a visible state, and can be restarted without hidden timers or stale state. Google AI Studio is useful because it shortens the distance between an idea and a running web prototype. Your testing, code review, and decisions about secrets, sharing, and deployment are what turn that prototype into a dependable game.
