How to Build and Deploy a GraphQL Server with Node.js and MongoDB

Build a production-minded GraphQL CRUD API with Apollo Server, Node.js, and MongoDB. This guide covers schema design, one-time MongoClient startup, resolvers, Express, security, deployment, and troubleshooting.

Build the API in four layers: a GraphQL schema that defines the public contract, Apollo Server that executes operations, resolvers that validate and translate those operations, and the official MongoDB Node.js driver that performs database work. Connect one MongoClient during startup, pass the selected database through resolver context, and deploy with managed secrets, TLS, authentication, network restrictions, and limits on expensive queries.

This guide implements a small CRUD API, shows both Apollo standalone HTTP and Express integration, and finishes with an operating checklist for MongoDB Atlas or a self-managed deployment.

What you are building

The finished service exposes a Record resource through GraphQL. Clients can fetch one record, list records with a bounded limit, and create, update, or delete records. GraphQL’s September 2025 specification describes GraphQL as “a query language and execution engine for describing and performing the capabilities and requirements of data models for client-server applications.” The practical consequence is that the schema is a queryable contract: clients know which types, fields, arguments, nullability rules, queries, and mutations are supported without seeing your MongoDB collections.

MongoDB remains an implementation detail. A resolver receives a validated GraphQL argument, converts it to a safe MongoDB operation, and maps the resulting document back to the schema. That boundary is where authorization, input validation, projections, pagination, and predictable errors belong.

Choose a supported runtime before installing packages

Pin the Node.js and package versions you actually support in package.json and your lockfile. Apollo’s MERN tutorial assumes Node.js 20 or newer, while MongoDB’s Node.js quick start lists Node.js 16.20.1 or later for that tutorial. Using Node.js 20 LTS for a new service gives the Apollo example a compatible baseline; if your organization standardizes on another release, verify that release against the exact Apollo Server, GraphQL, and MongoDB driver versions you lock.

  • A MongoDB deployment: MongoDB Atlas is the managed route; Enterprise and Community editions can be self-managed.
  • A database user with only the permissions this API needs.
  • A connection string kept out of source control.
  • Node.js and npm installed on the build and runtime machines.

Define the GraphQL contract first

Start with the operations clients are allowed to perform, not with collection methods. The schema below deliberately exposes a narrow set of fields and arguments. It does not let a caller select a collection, arbitrary sort key, or unlimited page size.

}

type Mutation {
  createRecord(input: CreateRecordInput!): Record!
  updateRecord(id: ID!, input: UpdateRecordInput!): Record!
  deleteRecord(id: ID!): Boolean!
}
`;

Make nullability intentional

record can return null when no document matches. A list is always returned for records, and each item must be a complete Record. Mutation results are non-null because a failed operation should produce a GraphQL error instead of a misleading empty success value. If your domain permits missing titles or soft-deleted rows, change the schema and resolver behavior together.

Keep database identifiers out of the public shape

MongoDB stores an ObjectId in _id; the schema exposes it as an opaque GraphQL ID. Clients should not need to know whether the backing store uses ObjectId, UUID, or another key. The resolver performs the conversion and rejects malformed IDs before querying.

Create the Node.js project

  1. Create a directory and initialize npm:
    mkdir graphql-mongodb-api
    cd graphql-mongodb-api
    npm init -y
  2. Install Apollo Server, GraphQL, and the official MongoDB driver:
    npm install @apollo/server graphql mongodb
  3. Add a start script such as "start": "node src/index.js" to package.json. Commit package-lock.json so deployment installs the same dependency tree you tested.
  4. Create src/index.js. The example below uses environment variables directly, so no credentials need to be embedded in JavaScript.

Connect to MongoDB once during startup

The MongoDB driver accepts an Atlas SRV URI or a standard self-managed URI such as mongodb://host:27017. Create one MongoClient, connect it before accepting GraphQL traffic, and reuse its pool for every resolver. Opening a new client inside each field resolver adds latency, consumes connections, and makes shutdown unreliable.

The driver documentation recommends the Stable API option for applications that need predictable server behavior. The following startup code also pings the selected database so a bad URI, credential, or network rule fails early.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
import { MongoClient, ServerApiVersion } from 'mongodb';

const uri = process.env.MONGODB_URI;
const databaseName = process.env.MONGODB_DATABASE;

if (!uri || !databaseName) {
  throw new Error('MONGODB_URI and MONGODB_DATABASE are required');
}

const client = new MongoClient(uri, {
  serverApi: {
    version: ServerApiVersion.v1,
    strict: true,
    deprecationErrors: true
  }
});

await client.connect();
const db = client.db(databaseName);
await db.command({ ping: 1 });

const records = db.collection('records');

Set the variables in your shell or deployment secret store. A local example might use mongodb://127.0.0.1:27017; an Atlas deployment normally supplies an SRV connection string. Do not commit a URI containing a username or password, and do not print the URI in startup logs.

Implement Apollo Server with standalone HTTP

Apollo’s minimal Node.js server uses @apollo/server, graphql, a typeDefs value, a resolvers value, and startStandaloneServer. The complete example below combines the schema, resolver boundary, startup connection, and graceful shutdown.

  listen: { port: Number(process.env.PORT) || 4000 },
  context: async () => ({ records })
});

console.log(`GraphQL server listening at ${url}`);

async function shutdown() {
  await client.close();
  process.exit(0);
}
process.once('SIGINT', shutdown);
process.once('SIGTERM', shutdown);

Why the resolver code is deliberately restrictive

  • asObjectId rejects malformed identifiers before MongoDB receives a query.
  • records caps the page at 100 and projects only fields needed by the schema.
  • Mutations trim text, enforce a title length, and reject an empty update.
  • MongoDB’s deletedCount and the update result become predictable NOT_FOUND errors rather than silent success.
  • The client chooses neither collection names nor sort expressions. Those values remain server-owned.

In a larger API, move these helpers into modules and add authorization checks before the database call. Context is a suitable place to expose the authenticated principal, while resolver helpers can enforce ownership or role requirements for each operation.

Expose the same server through Express

Use standalone mode when Apollo owns the HTTP listener and your service needs little middleware. Choose Express when you already have routing, CORS policy, request logging, proxy integration, or other HTTP middleware. Apollo’s Express 5 integration requires @as-integrations/express5, express, and cors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
npm install express cors @as-integrations/express5

The integration must start Apollo before mounting expressMiddleware. JSON parsing and CORS middleware run before GraphQL; the drain plugin lets the HTTP server finish in-flight requests during shutdown.

import http from 'node:http';
import express from 'express';
import cors from 'cors';
import { ApolloServer } from '@apollo/server';
import { expressMiddleware } from '@as-integrations/express5';
import { ApolloServerPluginDrainHttpServer } from '@apollo/server/plugin/drainHttpServer';

const app = express();
const httpServer = http.createServer(app);

const server = new ApolloServer({
  typeDefs,
  resolvers,
  plugins: [ApolloServerPluginDrainHttpServer({ httpServer })]
});

await server.start();
app.use('/graphql', cors(), express.json(), expressMiddleware(server, {
  context: async ({ req }) => ({
    records,
    authorization: req.headers.authorization ?? null
  })
}));

app.get('/healthz', (_req, res) => {
  res.status(200).json({ status: 'ok' });
});

app.get('/readyz', async (_req, res) => {
  try {
    await db.command({ ping: 1 });
    res.status(200).json({ status: 'ready' });
  } catch {
    res.status(503).json({ status: 'not-ready' });
  }
});

await new Promise((resolve) => httpServer.listen(
  Number(process.env.PORT) || 4000,
  resolve
));

healthz answers whether the process is alive; readyz checks database reachability. Keep those meanings separate so an orchestrator does not send traffic to a process that cannot reach MongoDB. In production, configure CORS to the actual client origins instead of accepting every origin.

Test the API before deployment

Run a simple query

Start the server with MONGODB_URI, MONGODB_DATABASE, and optionally PORT set. Send a bounded query to the endpoint printed at startup:

curl -X POST http://localhost:4000/
  -H 'content-type: application/json'
  --data-binary @- <<'JSON'
{"query":"{ records(limit: 10) { id title description createdAt updatedAt } }"}
JSON

The response contains a JSON object with a data.records array. An invalid limit should produce a GraphQL error whose extension code is BAD_USER_INPUT.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create and update a record

curl -X POST http://localhost:4000/
  -H 'content-type: application/json'
  --data-binary @- <<'JSON'
{"query":"mutation { createRecord(input: { title: \"First level\", description: \"Demo data\" }) { id title } }"}
JSON

Use the returned ID in an update or delete mutation. Test malformed IDs, missing records, overlong titles, empty updates, and duplicate-key paths for any unique indexes you add. Those cases are more valuable than testing only the happy path because they verify that your resolver boundary protects MongoDB and returns stable client-facing errors.

Add authentication and authorization at the resolver boundary

Transport security and identity are separate concerns. TLS protects the connection; authentication establishes who is calling; authorization decides which records that caller may read or change.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
  1. Terminate TLS at a trusted load balancer or configure TLS on the Node.js listener. Use https end to end when your network policy requires it.
  2. Read the bearer token or session credential in the Express context (or the standalone context’s request object). Verify it with your identity provider; do not treat an unverified decoded payload as identity.
  3. Place a small principal object in context, such as { id, roles }. Resolver helpers can then require a role or add an owner predicate to every MongoDB filter.
  4. Use a least-privilege MongoDB user. The application account should not have administrative permissions or unrestricted access to unrelated databases.
  5. Return the same not-found response where appropriate so callers cannot infer the existence of records they are not authorized to see.

Authentication code depends on your identity provider and is intentionally not hard-coded into this CRUD example. Keep token verification, role mapping, and ownership predicates in tested modules rather than duplicating them in individual field resolvers.

Protect GraphQL from expensive operations

GraphQL lets a client select nested fields, so a small HTTP request can otherwise trigger substantial work. Apply several layers of control:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Set request-body and HTTP timeouts at your proxy or server.
  • Bound list arguments, as the records resolver does, and prefer cursor pagination for collections that can grow.
  • Use projections so MongoDB returns only fields the resolver needs.
  • Set query depth, field-count, execution-time, or cost limits appropriate to your schema and threat model. Apollo’s API documentation covers execution controls and startup behavior; choose and test explicit limits rather than relying on defaults.
  • Disable GraphQL IDE access and restrict introspection in production unless your authenticated development workflow requires them. Keep a separate policy for staging.
  • Rate-limit requests at the edge and log operation name, status, and latency without logging authorization headers, passwords, or sensitive field values.
  • Use persisted or allow-listed operations for trusted clients when the API is exposed to untrusted networks.

Deploy with secrets, TLS, and network controls

Configuration and secrets

Provide MONGODB_URI, MONGODB_DATABASE, token-verification settings, and the listening port through the platform’s secret and configuration facilities. Do not bake them into a container image, commit them to a repository, or include them in error messages. Rotate credentials by creating a replacement database user, updating the secret, restarting instances, and removing the old user after all clients have moved.

MongoDB Atlas or self-managed MongoDB

Decision Managed Atlas deployment Self-managed Enterprise or Community deployment
Operational ownership The service provider operates the database infrastructure and exposes deployment controls. Your team operates hosts, upgrades, monitoring, and failure recovery.
Network setup Configure the project network allowlist or private connectivity and ensure the application egress address is permitted. Configure firewalls, private routing, bind addresses, and security groups yourself.
Scaling controls Use the deployment’s supported sizing and scaling controls. Choose and maintain compute, storage, replica, and sharding capacity.
Backups Select and verify the provider’s backup and restore policy. Design, schedule, store, and test backups and restore procedures.
Cost Varies by selected region, capacity, and service options; no single price applies. Varies with infrastructure, operations, storage, and support costs; no single price applies.

Whichever model you choose, enable authentication, use TLS, restrict network access, and test restoring data. A reachable MongoDB port without these controls should not be considered production-ready.

Process lifecycle and readiness

  1. Build with the lockfile and run tests in CI.
  2. Inject secrets at deployment time.
  3. Start the process and fail if the initial MongoDB connection or ping fails.
  4. Expose liveness and readiness checks with different meanings.
  5. Reuse the startup-created MongoClient across requests.
  6. On SIGTERM, stop accepting traffic, allow in-flight requests to drain, close the MongoDB client, and then exit.
  7. Alert on readiness failures, GraphQL error rates, latency, connection-pool exhaustion, and database replication or storage warnings.

Standalone Apollo versus Express integration

Concern Standalone Apollo Express integration
HTTP customization Minimal listener setup and a compact deployment surface. Full control over routes, middleware order, health endpoints, and proxy-specific behavior.
Middleware needs Best when GraphQL is the primary HTTP service. Best when authentication, CORS, logging, uploads, or other routes already use Express.
Operational complexity Fewer moving parts; still requires startup checks and graceful database shutdown. More lifecycle code; Apollo must be started before expressMiddleware, and the HTTP drain plugin should be configured.
Typical choice A focused internal or public GraphQL service. An existing Node.js web application that is adding GraphQL.

Native MongoDB driver versus an ODM

Option Strengths Trade-offs
Official mongodb driver Direct access to MongoDB operations, projections, indexes, sessions, and transactions with little abstraction. Your team writes mapping, validation, and model conventions in resolver or service code.
ODM Model schemas, middleware, validation helpers, and higher-level conventions can speed a large domain model. Adds an abstraction layer, version compatibility concerns, and sometimes less obvious query behavior.

This guide uses the native driver because GraphQL already supplies the public schema and the resolver layer is the natural place to enforce request-specific rules. An ODM can be reasonable when your application needs its model lifecycle features; it does not remove the need for GraphQL authorization, pagination, or query limits.

Common failures and precise fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Startup says MONGODB_URI is missing. The process environment does not contain the required secret. Set the variable in the shell, container, or platform secret store and restart; do not put it in source code.
Connection times out against Atlas. The client’s egress address is not allowed, DNS cannot resolve the SRV record, or a private-network route is absent. Check the Atlas network rule, DNS, firewall, and private connectivity from the same runtime environment.
Authentication fails after deployment. The URI has the wrong credentials, encoding, authentication database, or a rotated password. Create or rotate a least-privilege user, encode special characters in the URI, update the secret, and restart instances.
Every request returns a server error after a driver upgrade. The application and driver/server API settings are incompatible. Pin the tested driver version, keep the Stable API options aligned with the server, and inspect the original error without exposing credentials.
record returns null for a known ID. The ID is from another database, was copied incorrectly, or the document was deleted. Verify the selected database and collection, validate the ObjectId, and check authorization filters.
Express returns 404 or Apollo startup errors. server.start() was omitted or middleware was mounted before startup. Await server.start(), then mount JSON parsing and expressMiddleware; confirm the client is calling the mounted path.
Large queries exhaust CPU or database connections. Unbounded lists, deep nesting, expensive resolvers, or unrestricted introspection are exposed. Enforce pagination, projections, depth or cost limits, rate limits, and an environment-specific introspection policy.
Shutdown leaves connections open. The process exits without closing the MongoDB client or draining HTTP requests. Handle termination signals, drain the HTTP server in Express, close the client, and let the process exit only after cleanup.

Production launch checklist

  • Schema reviewed for deliberate nullability, field exposure, and backward compatibility.
  • Node.js, Apollo Server, GraphQL, and MongoDB driver versions pinned and tested.
  • One startup-created MongoClient with a successful ping before readiness.
  • Secrets supplied by a secret manager; no credentials in source, images, or logs.
  • TLS, database authentication, least-privilege roles, and restricted network access enabled.
  • Resolvers validate IDs and input, use projections, cap limits, and return stable error codes.
  • Authentication and per-record authorization enforced through context and resolver helpers.
  • Request, depth, cost, timeout, and rate limits tested against representative expensive queries.
  • Introspection and GraphQL IDE access restricted according to the environment.
  • Liveness, readiness, latency, error, and database health metrics monitored.
  • Graceful shutdown closes HTTP and MongoDB resources; backup restoration has been exercised.
