The reliable way to add an API integration that n8n does not provide is to treat development and deployment as two separate jobs: build and test a versioned node package with n8n’s official n8n-node CLI, then install that package in the same runtime that runs your self-hosted n8n. Docker deployments normally receive a custom image; globally installed n8n deployments receive the module inside the n8n installation. Keeping those paths separate prevents a node that works on a laptop from disappearing when the server restarts or the container is recreated.

A custom node is an npm package containing one or more n8n nodes and, when needed, credential definitions. It runs inside the n8n process and appears in the editor alongside built-in nodes. You can keep the package private on your network, install it from a private registry, or publish it as a community package. Publication is optional: a server-only integration does not need to be listed in a public catalog or submitted for verification.
The practical workflow has four stages:
- Plan and implement: choose declarative or programmatic code, scaffold the package, and add the API and credentials.
- Build and test: compile TypeScript, run linting, and exercise the node in a local n8n instance.
- Package for the target host: pin the node and n8n versions and create the Docker image or installation artifact appropriate to that host.
- Roll out carefully: test representative workflows, retain the previous package or image for rollback, and monitor after the restart.
The official documentation describes n8n-node as “the official CLI for developing community nodes for n8n.” Read the custom-node overview for the boundaries between these stages.

Prerequisites and version checks
Before creating the package, prepare a development machine and a test n8n environment. The overview assumes working knowledge of JavaScript or TypeScript, Git, npm packages, n8n data structures, and item linking. The current development setup documentation lists Node.js 22.22.0 as the minimum version. Because that minimum and the supported n8n image runtime are release-sensitive, verify them in the development-environment guide and the release documentation for the n8n version you will run.
- Install the required Node.js release and npm on the development machine.
- Install Git if you will use the starter repository or keep the node in source control.
- Use a code editor with ESLint, EditorConfig, and Prettier support; n8n recommends VS Code with those extensions.
- Have a non-production n8n instance or disposable database for workflow tests.
- For the CLI-managed development preview, have Docker or Podman available when your n8n release requires the local instance to run in a container.
Do not assume that the Node.js version on the host is the version inside an n8n container. Check both. A package can compile successfully on the workstation and still fail to load when its JavaScript engine, n8n API, or dependency set differs on the server.

Decide the implementation style before scaffolding. n8n’s guidance says, “Build your node in the declarative style. It’s the default for new nodes.” The declarative approach expresses HTTP routing, parameters, authentication, and response mapping as JSON-like configuration, usually without writing a custom execute() method. It is the shorter path for a conventional REST API.
Use declarative style for a conventional REST API
- The service exposes predictable HTTP endpoints.
- Operations differ mainly by method, URL, query parameters, headers, and body fields.
- n8n’s standard request and credential handling can represent the integration.
- You want less implementation code to maintain when the API adds ordinary resources.
Use programmatic style when behavior is not a simple request map
- The node is a trigger. Trigger nodes must use programmatic style.
- The service uses GraphQL or another non-REST protocol.
- You need an external dependency that is not covered by declarative configuration.
- The node performs complex transformations, branching, pagination, polling, or feature-specific behavior.
A single package may contain both styles. Choose per node rather than forcing an entire package into one style.
For a deeper decision explanation, use n8n’s node-building-style documentation.
Scaffold the package with n8n-node
The current initializer is the least error-prone way to create the expected package structure and configuration.

- From a working directory, run the initializer shown in the current CLI guide:
npm create @n8n/node@latest - Answer the prompts for the package name, implementation style, and template. The documented templates include declarative examples and a programmatic example.
- Use a package name beginning with
n8n-nodes-, or the scoped form@your-org/n8n-nodes-name. Replaceyour-organdnamewith your actual organization and integration name. - Change into the generated package directory and commit the initial scaffold before adding API-specific code.
If you prefer a global CLI installation, install and verify it first:
npm install --global @n8n/node-cli
n8n-node --version
The CLI page is the authority for the available prompts and templates; they can change between releases. Keep the generated package.json, TypeScript configuration, lint rules, and build scripts unless you have a specific reason to alter them.
Implement credentials, nodes, and data handling
Add the credential definition required by the API, then implement the node using the selected style. Keep secrets in n8n credentials rather than in node properties, source code, workflow JSON, or Docker build arguments. Map the API response into n8n items deliberately and preserve the fields a downstream workflow needs. When a node receives multiple input items, follow n8n’s item-linking model so outputs can be traced to their source inputs.
For programmatic nodes, make error handling explicit: distinguish authentication failures, rate limits, validation errors, timeouts, and malformed responses so an operator can act on the message. For declarative nodes, verify that the configured request, authentication, pagination, and response mapping cover the API’s actual behavior rather than only the happy path.

Keep the package’s node and credential registrations in the form generated by the scaffold. If you later publish the package, n8n expects those registrations in the n8n field of package.json; the same metadata helps a private installation discover the files.

n8n-node build
n8n-node lint
n8n-node dev
The equivalent npm scripts are normally:
npm run build
npm run lint
npm run dev
Build
build compiles the TypeScript and packages project assets. Treat the generated dist directory as a build artifact: deploy the output produced by a clean, repeatable build instead of hand-editing files inside it.
Lint
lint checks the project’s conventions and may offer or attempt fixes. Review every change, then run lint again and commit the resulting source changes. A clean lint result does not prove that authentication, pagination, or a real API response works; it only removes one class of implementation errors.
Development preview
dev starts n8n with the node loaded so you can add it to a workflow and exercise it locally. Create tests for successful requests and representative failures, then inspect the actual item data passed between nodes. Test credentials with least-privilege access and use a non-production account where the API allows it.
The current CLI documentation says that, from n8n 3.0, the local development instance runs in a container and therefore needs Docker or Podman. The alternative n8n-node dev --external-n8n uses an independently run n8n instance started with N8N_DEV_RELOAD=true. Confirm this behavior for the n8n and CLI versions you are using before scripting the preview command. See Using the n8n-node tool for the release-specific details.
Deploy a private node in Docker
For a Docker-based server, the durable method is a custom n8n image. Build the node first, copy its compiled node and credential directories from dist into the custom-node directory expected by the selected n8n image, and build a new image that pins the n8n release. The exact base image, user, directory, and entrypoint are release-sensitive; use the current private-node installation page and the Dockerfile for your n8n release rather than copying an older Node 16-era example unchanged.
Recommended Docker workflow
- Run
n8n-node buildin a clean checkout and confirm that the required node and credential output exists underdist. - Choose and pin the exact n8n image tag that matches the production server. Do not use a floating tag when reproducibility matters.
- Write a Dockerfile based on that release’s current image instructions. Copy the built node and credential folders into the image’s documented custom-node directory.
- Build a uniquely tagged image, for example:
docker build -t n8n-with-private-node:2026-10-14 . - Start the image in a staging stack with the same environment variables, database mode, volumes, credentials configuration, and reverse-proxy behavior as production.
- Open a representative workflow, execute the custom node, inspect its output and logs, and verify that existing workflows still load.
- Replace the production image only after the staging check. Keep the previous image tag available so a failed rollout can be reversed.
Pin the custom package revision as well as the n8n image. Rebuild the image whenever either changes, and record both versions in the deployment manifest. A container rebuild is what makes the private node survive a new container, host migration, or routine image update; installing files interactively inside a running container is not a durable deployment.

Common Docker failure points
- The node is absent after recreation: it was installed only in a disposable container. Rebuild the image and redeploy it.
- n8n starts but the node does not appear: the compiled output was copied to the wrong directory, the package metadata does not register the node, or the build targeted an incompatible n8n release. Check the image’s documented path and startup logs.
- The image builds but n8n crashes: inspect Node.js and dependency compatibility, then rebuild from the release’s current base image instead of relying on an old sample Dockerfile.
Install a private node in a globally installed n8n
When n8n itself is installed globally on a host rather than run from a container, install the module inside the n8n installation that actually launches the service. A host-level npm install in an unrelated directory does not make the package discoverable.
- Identify the executable, service account, global npm prefix, and working directory used by the n8n service. Check the service definition or process manager rather than assuming it runs as your interactive shell user.
- Build the node package and make it available to that host, using a private registry, an internal package artifact, or a controlled local package source.
- Install the package in the n8n installation’s package context, following the current paths and permissions in n8n’s private-node instructions.
- Restart the n8n service so it rescans installed packages.
- Confirm in the editor that the node and its credentials are present, then execute a staging workflow before enabling production workflows.
Document the service user and installation path. If a later n8n upgrade changes the global npm prefix or service unit, repeat the discovery step; otherwise the package can remain installed on disk but invisible to the process that now runs n8n.
Manually install a private or community npm package
n8n documents manual installation for self-hosted community packages when an instance uses queue mode or when the package is private. In the n8n runtime environment, create the nodes directory, install the package there, and restart n8n:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsmkdir -p ~/.n8n/nodes
cd ~/.n8n/nodes
npm install your-private-package
# restart n8n
Run these commands as the same user and in the same runtime that owns the n8n data directory. In Docker, open a shell in the appropriate container or use a persistent volume strategy; installing into a temporary container layer will be lost when that container is replaced. The exact package name and update command come from the package you control and the current n8n manual-installation page at Manual installation of community nodes.
An update can contain breaking changes and can break workflows that use the node. Test a new version against representative workflows, export or otherwise retain the current workflow definitions, and keep the previous package version available for rollback. Queue-mode deployments also need the package available wherever node execution occurs, not only on a single editor process.

| Deployment path | How the package is delivered | Update behavior | Operational focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Docker custom image | Build the node, copy its compiled node and credential folders into the n8n image, and deploy the resulting image. | Rebuild and retest the image when n8n or the node changes; pin both versions. | Reproducible infrastructure, image promotion, persistent volumes, and rollback tags. |
| Global n8n installation | Install the module inside the n8n installation used by the service, then restart n8n. | Repeat the installation after package or n8n upgrades and verify the service’s package context. | Correct service user, npm prefix, filesystem permissions, and process-manager restarts. |
| Manual npm package installation | Install the package under ~/.n8n/nodes in the n8n runtime environment, then restart. |
Run the documented npm update or version-specific install, test for breaking changes, and retain rollback material. | Private packages and queue-mode deployments, with the package present on every process that executes workflows. |
None of these paths is universally faster or safer. The right choice follows the host you already operate and how rigorously you can reproduce and test its runtime.

Package publication and verification
If you intend to distribute the node beyond your own server, n8n treats it as an npm community package. The package name must start with n8n-nodes- or its scoped equivalent, include the n8n-community-node-package keyword, and declare nodes and credentials in the n8n field of package.json. Lint and local testing are recommended before publication. These requirements are described in Submit community nodes.

The current Creator Portal page says that, beginning May 1, 2026, verified publication must use GitHub Actions with an npm provenance statement. It also lists technical and user-experience guidelines and says verified nodes must have no runtime dependencies. A private node can remain private and does not need to be represented as verified or community-listed.
Security and runtime controls
Custom nodes are executable dependencies inside n8n. Review their source, ownership, release history, transitive dependencies, network destinations, filesystem access, and credentials handling before loading them. Pin versions where practical and review every update. n8n’s security audit reports community and custom nodes in its node-risk report, but use of the official CLI or presence in a verification listing is not a guarantee that a package is safe for your particular deployment.
Review the current nodes environment-variable reference when you need to control which nodes load, configure community-node behavior, permit external modules in the Code node, or apply node-specific limits. Do not hard-code an environment variable from an old deployment guide: names, defaults, and support can change with n8n releases.
- Use a dedicated test credential and least-privilege API permissions.
- Keep secrets out of Git, Dockerfiles, image layers, and npm package contents.
- Review logs for accidental request headers or response data before enabling verbose diagnostics.
- Separate staging and production packages or image tags so an experimental build cannot be selected accidentally.
- Back up workflow definitions and retain the last known-good image or package before upgrading.
Upgrade and rollback procedure
- Read the n8n and node package changelogs and identify API, credential, dependency, and data-shape changes.
- Build the candidate package from a clean commit and record its version.
- Run
n8n-node buildandn8n-node lint, then execute unit or integration checks available for the package. - Deploy the candidate to a staging n8n instance running the target n8n version.
- Run workflows covering authentication, each operation, pagination or polling, error branches, retries, and downstream item linking.
- For Docker, promote a new image tag; for a global or manual install, install the exact package version in the correct runtime context.
- Monitor startup logs and first production executions. If the node fails, stop the rollout, restore the previous image or package version, restart n8n, and investigate from the captured logs and workflow execution data.
Pre-production checklist
- The development Node.js version meets the current minimum, and the target n8n runtime has been checked separately.
- The implementation style matches the API: declarative for a conventional REST integration, programmatic for triggers, GraphQL, external dependencies, or complex logic.
- The package name and generated metadata are valid, and node and credential registrations are present.
- Build and lint complete without unreviewed changes.
- The node has been exercised in a local or staging n8n instance with real-shaped data and failure cases.
- The deployment uses the correct host path: a rebuilt Docker image, the actual global n8n installation, or the runtime’s
~/.n8n/nodesdirectory. - The n8n image and custom package versions are pinned and recorded.
- Every execution process in a queue-mode deployment can load the package.
- Credentials, logs, dependencies, and permissions have been reviewed.
- A tested rollback image or package is available before production replacement.
