What the DayZ Flagpole does
The Flagpole is a permanent base-building object. Its practical purpose is not decoration: when a flag is raised, it marks an area in which items stored inside containers are generally protected from the normal cleanup system. Community references consistently put the protection radius at about 60 metres from the pole. That radius is a reported value rather than a guaranteed permanent constant, so treat it as subject to change in a future update.

The important limitation is what counts as protected storage. The commonly cited rule applies to items inside storage containers located within the radius. A loose item on the ground is not a safe substitute for a crate, barrel, sea chest, improvised shelter or another supported container. A player report described loose items outside containers disappearing after roughly eight hours even when a nearby pole existed. Store anything you want to keep rather than dropping it beside the pole.
Flags and Flag Poles were introduced on PC Experimental in update 1.09 in August 2020. The construction sequence has remained familiar, but quantities and upkeep behaviour reported by guides do not agree, so use the in-game interaction prompts as the final authority.

Materials and tools to gather first
Collect the complete load before starting. Building in stages at an exposed site leaves materials vulnerable to weather, infected players and other survivors. The following list combines the quantities most often reported by community guides; it is deliberately conservative where those guides conflict.

These are approximate community figures, not an official Bohemia Interactive bill of materials. A server running a different build, a changed recipe or a modded configuration can require something else. If the build prompt will not activate, check the highlighted missing component rather than forcing the published totals.
Making large stones
Large stones are obtained from boulders. Use a pickaxe or sledgehammer on a boulder, then collect the resulting stones. Mining is noisy and leaves you stationary, so clear infected nearby and choose a route that lets you move the materials safely. Do not assume that a pile gathered for another base project will be enough for the pole.
How to craft a Flag Pole Kit
- Open your inventory and place three short wooden sticks and one rope in the crafting area.
- Combine them to create a Flag Pole Kit. If the recipe does not appear, confirm that the sticks are short wooden sticks rather than long sticks or another wooden component.
- Keep the completed kit in your hands or inventory while you select the location. The kit is the deployable starting point; it is not the finished pole.
How to choose a flagpole location
Placement determines whether the pole protects the storage you care about. Walk the intended compound before deploying the kit and identify every container that must fall inside the roughly 60-metre radius. The radius is measured from the pole, so placing it at the edge of a base can leave part of the storage area outside the protected circle.
Check the ground
- Choose level, unobstructed ground where the kit can display a valid placement preview.
- Leave enough working space around the base for you to add logs, stones and tools without a wall, vehicle or terrain feature blocking the interaction point.
- Avoid placing it where a gate, building corner or dense foliage hides the flag. You need to inspect the flag periodically, and an inaccessible pole is easy to neglect.
- Consider visibility and defence. The tall pole advertises a base, so a hidden storage layout and secure perimeter are more important than simply putting the pole in the centre of an open field.
Measure the storage area
Because the protection figure is approximate, do not place a container exactly at the presumed 60-metre boundary. Put important containers comfortably inside the circle and use the pole as the centre of your storage plan. If you have several disconnected stash buildings, calculate each one separately; one pole may not cover every outlying cache.

Step-by-step: build and raise the pole
1. Deploy the kit
- Hold the Flag Pole Kit and select a valid patch of ground.
- Use the placement action to deploy the kit. A temporary frame or construction point appears.
- Move around the frame and check that you can reach each interaction side before committing to the next stage.
2. Prepare the base
Community guides differ on whether a shovel, pickaxe or sledgehammer is accepted for this stage. Equip one of those tools and interact with the deployed frame. If the build action is unavailable, cycle through the other listed tools and read the on-screen requirement. Complete the base before adding the structural supports.

- Attach the required logs to the base.
- Add large stones to reinforce it.
- If the prompt requests more stone, mine additional boulders rather than substituting small stones or rocks.
The construction menu normally shows which component is still missing. Finish one material category at a time so you can see whether the base has advanced to the next stage.
4. Build the upright pole
- Add the remaining logs to the partially completed structure.
- Attach the metal wire and the additional rope when the prompt exposes those slots.
- Supply nails. Published guides disagree between approximately 32 and 60 nails, so expect the higher figure and keep spares nearby.
- Equip a hammer or hatchet and use the build action to assemble the upright pole. If neither tool works, the current server may require the alternate tool or a different construction stage first.
5. Attach a flag
A Flag Pole does not generate its own flag. Find a flag as loot in the world, carry it to the completed pole and use the attach action. The pole becomes operational only after a flag is installed and raised. If the flag cannot be attached, verify that the pole construction itself is complete and that the flag is a compatible loot item rather than a different decorative object.
6. Raise the flag
Use the pole’s interaction menu to raise the attached flag. Look at the flag after the action: a raised flag is the state associated with the reported despawn protection. If the interaction offers only an attach or lower option, the pole may not yet be fully built or the flag may already be in a different state.
How the protection radius and despawn rule work
What the 60-metre figure means
Multiple community sources report a radius of approximately 60 metres. A developer statement quoted secondhand in a Steam discussion also described the radius as currently set to 60 metres, but the original post was not available for verification. Treat 60 metres as the best working estimate, not a promise that applies forever or to every server.

What to store inside the radius
Use containers for anything you expect the pole to preserve. Put the container itself within the pole’s effective area, then keep the items inside it. A weapon, tool, bag or building component left loose on the ground can still be cleaned up. The reported eight-hour disappearance of loose items is anecdotal rather than a universal timer, but it illustrates why loose storage is unsafe.
What the pole does not do
- It does not make a base invulnerable to raids, theft or server wipes.
- It does not replace a locked gate, a concealed stash or ordinary base security.
- It does not guarantee protection for containers outside the effective radius.
- It does not remove the need to monitor the flag’s condition.
Flag upkeep: lowering, theft and uncertain timers
Flag maintenance is the least consistent part of the available guidance. One DayZ wiki entry describes a flag slowly lowering over about 45 days before it must be re-hoisted. Another guide gives 49 days. A 2021 player comment claims a five-day reset cycle, while another guide says that a stolen flag immediately cancels protection and that the flag must be raised again every few days. These claims cannot all describe one universal timer.
The safe operating procedure is to inspect the flag regularly rather than schedule a distant reminder based on one number. When the flag is low, use the pole’s raise interaction. If another player has removed it, replace the missing flag and raise it again. Check the pole after server updates as well, because maintenance behaviour can change independently of the construction recipe.
A practical inspection routine
- Inspect the flag whenever you return to the base.
- Keep a spare found flag in a secure container so replacement does not depend on your next loot trip.
- After a raid, death, server restart or update, confirm that the flag is still attached and raised.
- Move critical supplies into containers well inside the radius instead of relying on a borderline placement.
Troubleshooting a flagpole that will not build
The kit will not deploy
Move to flatter ground, clear nearby objects and rotate the placement preview. A wall, tree, foundation or uneven terrain can invalidate an otherwise correct location. If the kit still cannot deploy, carry it in your hands and verify that you crafted the Flag Pole Kit rather than another rope-and-stick item.

Try the tools listed for the preparation stage: shovel, pickaxe and, where accepted by the server, sledgehammer. Confirm that the frame is deployed and that all required logs and stones have been attached. The prompt normally changes only after the previous material stage is complete.

The pole stops at the final construction stage
Check for the commonly omitted components: metal wire, a second rope, additional logs and more nails. A guide that lists 32 nails may describe a different build than one listing 60. Gather the larger amount and let the current interaction prompt identify the remaining shortage.
The flag cannot be raised
Make sure the flag is attached to a fully completed pole. If it was taken or lowered, retrieve or reattach a flag first. Stand close to the interaction point and use the raise action rather than the attach action.
Items still disappeared
First check whether the items were loose. Move them into a container and place that container closer to the pole’s centre. Then inspect the flag state and consider whether the items were outside the effective radius, the flag had lowered, another player had stolen it, or the server had changed its persistence rules.

Planning a reliable flagpole base
Central placement versus defensive placement
A central pole gives the best chance of covering several containers with one approximate 60-metre circle, but it is highly visible. A pole inside a defended compound is safer from theft, although an edge placement may leave distant storage uncovered. Choose the centre of the storage you actually use, not the centre of the building merely because it looks symmetrical.
Keep construction supplies secured
Do not leave nails, wire, rope or spare flags on the ground while you build. Use an existing container until the pole is operational. The flagpole protects storage only when the relevant conditions are met; it is not a temporary safe zone for loose construction materials.

Verify after construction
Once the flag is raised, walk to the furthest container you intend to rely on and reassess the distance. The game does not provide a visible measuring ring, so leave a margin rather than placing the last crate at the estimated boundary. Record which containers are covered in your own base plan, then recheck them after any update or relocation.
