What OpenClaw on a VPS does for a business
OpenClaw provides an agent gateway that receives a task through a connected channel, calls the language model and other APIs, performs the configured work, and returns a result. Hosting that gateway on your own VPS gives you a persistent server rather than a process tied to a desktop session.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That arrangement is useful for game studios, esports operators, online stores and other teams that need scheduled or message-driven work. Typical tasks described by vendor documentation include CRM synchronisation, order processing, web scraping, DevOps alerts, social-media operations and data reporting. The agent can receive a request, execute the task and reply with the result.
The main architectural distinction is where data and execution occur. With OpenClaw on your VPS, the gateway, its logs and the credentials you configure remain on infrastructure you control. Cloud automation services such as Zapier execute workflows in their own cloud. A private VPS can therefore be a better fit where privacy or compliance requirements make a shared cloud service difficult, although you become responsible for patching, access control, backups and incident response.

OpenClaw is not a magic compliance boundary. Data still travels to any external LLM, search provider, CRM, game-service API or scraping service that your workflow calls. Review each provider’s retention and processing terms before sending customer, payment or player information.
OpenClaw VPS requirements
Official installation guidance lists Node 24.16 or newer, or Node 26.1 or newer, and recommends Node 26. If Node is absent, the installer provisions Node 26 on macOS and Node 24 LTS on Linux. Use those current official requirements rather than older third-party claims about Node 22 or Node 24, or reports that a particular CLI rejected Node 23 in an earlier release.
Recommended Free Tools
| Resource | Development or light test | Production business setup | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU | 2 vCPU is commonly suggested | 4 vCPU is a safer starting point for concurrent work | Third-party sizing guidance; actual demand depends on workflow concurrency and local tools. |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | 4 GB minimum target; 8 GB safer for several automations or users | Third-party recommendations vary from 1 GB to 8 GB. No gateway RAM figure was stated in the official summaries reviewed. |
| Storage | 20 GB SSD can cover a small installation | At least 20 GB SSD; 40–60 GB gives more room for logs, images and data | Third-party figures; size separately for retained logs, Docker layers and backups. |
| Operating system | Linux VPS, such as Ubuntu | Patched Linux distribution with a supported Node release | Official material lists macOS, Linux and Windows; a VPS deployment is normally Linux. |
| Network | Outbound HTTPS and your chosen channel | Minimal inbound exposure; gateway access controlled by token or private network | The official gateway port shown is 18789. |
A 1 GB VPS is a poor production choice. One installation guide reports npm being killed during installation on a 1 GB machine and warns that the operating system can terminate OpenClaw when memory is exhausted. If you are testing a single simple Telegram bot that only calls APIs, a third-party guide claims a lower floor of 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM and 20 GB SSD, but treat that as a best-effort minimum rather than a business specification.
Entry-level pricing is volatile. Third-party comparisons put suitable plans around $4–6 per month, including a cited Hetzner CX22 with 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM at €3.79 (about $4) and a cited DigitalOcean basic plan at $6. Check the provider’s current regional price, bandwidth allowance, backup charge and renewal terms before buying. Budget LLM API fees and any search or scraping credits separately; they are not included in VPS rent.
How to set up OpenClaw on a VPS
1. Provision and prepare the server
- Choose a Linux VPS in a region allowed by your data-protection policy. Select at least 4 GB RAM for a serious trial and 8 GB if multiple users or automations will run together.
- Confirm the virtualisation type. Third-party Docker guidance warns that Docker does not run properly on OpenVZ-based systems. Select KVM or another provider-supported virtualisation option when you intend to use Docker.
- Log in for the initial setup, apply all operating-system updates, and reboot if the kernel or core libraries changed. Do not connect business accounts to an unpatched image.
- Create a non-root administrator, grant only the privileges needed for maintenance, and use SSH keys rather than password authentication. Keep a separate emergency console or provider recovery method.
- Configure a host firewall with only the ports you actually need. The OpenClaw gateway is shown on port 18789 in the official material; do not expose it broadly just because a Docker tutorial mentions port 3000. Add brute-force protection and review authentication logs.
Complete this baseline before entering an LLM key, CRM token, store credential or messaging-bot secret. A compromised VPS can expose every account that the automation is allowed to use.
2. Install a supported Node.js release with the official installer
The recommended route is the official installer for macOS, Linux and WSL2. On the VPS, run:
curl -fsSL https://openclaw.ai/install.sh | bash -s -- --no-onboard
The --no-onboard option installs the software without immediately starting the interactive wizard. That is useful on a server because you can first confirm the account, firewall and service plan, then run onboarding deliberately.
npm, pnpm and bun are alternatives. Recent npm versions may require an explicit --allow-scripts=openclaw option; the official page says it is unnecessary on npm 11.15 and earlier. Follow the installer output for the exact command accepted by the npm version installed on your VPS instead of forcing a package-manager option from an older guide.

After installation, verify that the command is available:
openclaw --version
node --version
If Node is below the official range, stop and correct the runtime before onboarding. Mixing system Node packages, a user-level version manager and a service account can produce a gateway that works in your shell but fails at boot, so use one deliberate Node installation for the account that will run the service.

Start the official onboarding flow with:
openclaw onboard --install-daemon
This registers the gateway as a background service. On Linux, third-party walkthroughs describe a systemd service that starts at boot and restarts after a crash. The wizard will ask for the configuration needed by your deployment, including the model provider and channel choices.
If you skipped daemon installation during onboarding, install it later with:
openclaw gateway install
Use the supplied service account rather than root wherever the installer permits. Keep the configuration and secret files readable only by that account and trusted administrators.
4. Connect a messaging channel and an LLM API key
Choose one channel for the first controlled test. A common walkthrough uses Telegram: create a bot with Telegram’s @BotFather, copy the bot token into the OpenClaw channel configuration, and restrict who can message it. Other channels may require their own application registration, webhook or approval process.
Add the LLM API key requested by your selected provider. Store it as a protected secret, not in a public repository, shell history, screenshot or chat message. Give the key the narrowest available permissions and set provider-side spending limits or alerts.
Begin with a harmless task such as reading a test record and returning a summary. Do not grant write access to orders, refunds, production deployments or player data until the channel identity, model behavior and audit trail are understood.

5. Check the installation and open the dashboard
Run the official diagnostics:
openclaw doctor
openclaw gateway status
openclaw dashboard
openclaw doctor checks common configuration problems, while openclaw gateway status confirms whether the service is running. openclaw dashboard opens the management UI according to the official command reference. If you access it remotely, use an SSH tunnel, a private network or a tightly restricted reverse proxy rather than publishing an administration panel to the whole internet.
OpenClaw Docker VPS deployment
Docker is useful when you want a repeatable image, process isolation and Compose-based updates. The official Docker procedure uses a script that creates host directories, builds an openclaw:local image, runs onboarding, generates a gateway token, synchronises the .env file and starts the gateway through the repository’s docker-compose.yml.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the official Docker guide and repository files for the current commands; do not copy a third-party port mapping without checking it. Official material shows the gateway on port 18789, while some third-party Docker tutorials claim a web UI on port 3000. That discrepancy is not resolved by the summaries available here, so inspect the Compose file and the running container’s published ports before changing your firewall.
Docker-specific checks
- Verify that the VPS supports Docker. OpenVZ-based systems are specifically warned against by third-party guides.
- Reserve enough memory for the image build and runtime. The official Docker page says exit code 137 during a build indicates that the VM ran out of memory.
- Persist the host directories created by the official script. Otherwise, replacing a container can remove configuration, logs or other state your workflow expects.
- Protect the generated gateway token and
.envfile with filesystem permissions and provider-level secret controls. - Pull or rebuild deliberately, test the new container, and keep a rollback path rather than treating an image update as risk-free.
Docker does not remove the need for host security. Patch the operating system and Docker engine, restrict the daemon socket, limit inbound ports and monitor container logs. Isolation reduces the blast radius of a process failure, but a container holding CRM or store credentials is still a high-value target.
Designing OpenClaw business automation
CRM synchronisation
Use a read-only CRM token for the first workflow. Ask OpenClaw to locate a defined record set, normalise fields and return a proposed update. Require a human approval step before writing contacts, changing lifecycle stages or sending messages. Log the record identifier, requested action, model response and final API result.
Order and support operations
An agent can classify incoming requests, retrieve order status and prepare a response. Keep payment capture, refunds, address changes and account deletion behind explicit approval or deterministic rules. Limit the bot to the minimum order fields needed for its answer, and redact payment data from prompts and logs.
DevOps and game-service alerts
Connect monitoring alerts to a private channel and let OpenClaw summarise symptoms, recent deploys and likely owners. For a game backend, it can group repeated server errors or flag an unusual matchmaking failure pattern. Start with diagnosis and ticket creation; require a named operator to approve restarts, rollbacks or configuration changes.
Social and reporting workflows
OpenClaw can assemble scheduled reports from approved APIs, summarise campaign metrics or draft social posts. Separate drafting from publishing. Store an immutable copy of the source metrics and the approved text so a later model response cannot silently rewrite the business record.

Web scraping and external data
Scraping can be useful for competitor price checks, game-server status or public release information, but respect each site’s terms, robots directives and rate limits. Use a dedicated egress identity where lawful, cache results, and avoid collecting personal data that the workflow does not need. Search and scraping credits can create costs beyond both the VPS and the LLM.

Security controls before connecting business accounts
A VPS is exposed infrastructure, not a private laptop. Apply these controls in order:
- Patch the host: install current operating-system and security updates and schedule regular maintenance windows.
- Reduce privilege: run OpenClaw under a non-root account, isolate separate projects where practical, and avoid giving an agent unrestricted shell access.
- Lock down SSH: use key-only authentication, disable password login after confirming key access, restrict administrative users and monitor failed attempts.
- Filter the network: allow only required inbound ports, restrict dashboard access by source IP or private network, and permit outbound traffic needed by your providers.
- Protect secrets: use environment or secret-manager storage, rotate tokens, remove unused keys and never place credentials in prompts or repositories.
- Curate skills and tools: allow only the integrations each workflow needs. A skill that can browse, execute commands or write files should not be enabled globally without review.
- Back up and test recovery: retain encrypted configuration backups, document how to recreate the VPS and verify that a backup can actually restore the gateway.
- Monitor activity: alert on repeated authentication failures, unexpected outbound traffic, new skills, configuration changes, unusual API spend and service restarts.
Use separate credentials for development and production. A test bot should point to sandbox records and a sandbox channel; it should not inherit production delete, refund or deployment permissions merely because the same model is used.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common VPS failures
npm or image build ends with exit code 137
Exit code 137 during the official Docker build means the VM ran out of memory. Stop unrelated workloads, move to a larger plan and retry. A 1 GB VPS can also have npm killed during installation; increasing RAM is more reliable than repeatedly rerunning the command.
The service works interactively but not after reboot
Check openclaw gateway status and inspect the service environment. Common causes are installing Node for one user while the daemon runs as another, a missing environment file, or a secret stored only in an interactive shell. Reinstall the daemon after correcting the service account’s PATH and secret permissions.
The dashboard or channel cannot connect
Confirm the gateway is running, then verify the actual listening and published port. Official guidance shows 18789; a tutorial’s 3000 mapping may belong to a different image or proxy. Check the host firewall, provider firewall, DNS and channel token before opening additional ports.
Node-version errors appear during onboarding
Run node --version as the same user that launches the daemon. Upgrade to the current official range—Node 24.16 or newer, or Node 26.1 or newer, with Node 26 recommended—then rerun onboarding. Do not rely on an older guide that pins a different major version.
Automations time out or consume the VPS
Measure concurrency rather than immediately adding tools. Limit simultaneous jobs, cap scraping and API retries, archive large logs, and move CPU- or memory-heavy processing to a separate worker. Upgrade from 4 GB to 8 GB when several users or automations genuinely overlap, and set provider spending alerts for model calls.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Operating OpenClaw after launch
Assign an owner for the gateway, an approver for high-impact actions and a schedule for patching. Review the skill allowlist whenever a workflow changes. Rotate messaging and API credentials on a documented cadence and immediately after staff departure, suspected exposure or provider incidents.
Keep a change record for model changes, prompts, tool permissions and API scopes. Test a representative task after every upgrade, including a denied action: the system should refuse an unauthorized refund, production restart or bulk data export. Retain only the logs needed for debugging, security and business records, and set an expiry period for the rest.
As usage grows, separate the public messaging endpoint from internal services, place administration behind a private network, and consider a second VPS for staging. A single host is simpler, but it is also a single failure domain; plan how staff will pause automations if the gateway, model provider or a connected business API behaves unexpectedly.
Is a VPS the right deployment for your automation?
| Choose a VPS when… | Choose another approach when… |
|---|---|
| You need a persistent gateway, scheduled jobs or a private network location. | You cannot operate patches, secrets, backups and incident response. |
| Privacy or compliance rules favour infrastructure you control. | Your policy prohibits sending workflow data to the external model or APIs required by the task. |
| You can budget at least 4 GB RAM and monitor API and compute costs. | The workload is occasional, tiny and cheaper to run as a managed function or existing SaaS workflow. |
| You want Docker isolation and repeatable Compose deployments. | Your provider uses unsupported OpenVZ virtualisation or blocks the Docker features you need. |
For a gaming business or small operations team, a sensible rollout is one hardened Linux VPS, one private test channel, read-only credentials and one low-risk workflow. Add write actions, additional users and production accounts only after diagnostics, logging and recovery procedures work as expected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run OpenClaw on Windows instead of a Linux VPS?
Yes. The official material lists macOS, Linux and Windows, with a native Windows app, a PowerShell installer or a WSL2 gateway. A Linux VPS remains the usual choice for an always-on server deployment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What should I do if my provider advertises port 3000?
Treat that mapping as unverified. Check the current OpenClaw Compose file or service configuration, confirm the gateway’s listening port, and expose only the port you have verified; official material identifies 18789.
Does Docker remove the need for a firewall and secret management?
No. Containers still run on an exposed host and may contain valuable credentials. Keep host patching, minimal inbound ports, protected environment files, token rotation and monitoring in place.
