You do not need to build a React application or use the Genesis Framework. The practical workflow is: enable the block editor, install the plugin, create a block and its fields, add a PHP template, style it, then test the block in both the editor and the front end.

What Genesis Custom Blocks actually provides
Genesis Custom Blocks is an administration interface and templating system for custom Gutenberg blocks. You define a block in WordPress, choose the data editors can enter, and associate that data with a PHP template. When an editor inserts the block, the saved field values are available to the template, which outputs the block’s HTML.
That model separates three concerns:
- Content modeling: the fields and controls an editor sees.
- Rendering: the PHP template that turns those values into markup.
- Presentation: CSS supplied by the plugin or theme that owns the block.
It is not a visual page builder and it is not a replacement for the WordPress editor. It adds a way to create purpose-built blocks whose input is constrained to the fields your content model requires.

Requirements and installation
Before creating a block, verify the environment rather than relying on an old tutorial. The WordPress.org repository metadata currently lists WordPress 6.0 or newer, PHP 7.0 or newer, and stable tag 1.7.3 for Genesis Custom Blocks. The metadata was accessed in 2026; check the repository and the installed package for any newer requirements before deploying to production.
| Requirement | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress | 6.0 or newer according to the current repository metadata | The plugin relies on the block editor and its APIs. |
| PHP | 7.0 or newer according to the same metadata | The PHP template must execute on the server. |
| Editor | The WordPress block editor is enabled for the post type you will use | Genesis Custom Blocks creates Gutenberg blocks, not classic-editor shortcodes. |
| Plugin version | Confirm the installed version and its documentation | Field availability, template conventions, and helper functions can change between releases. |
Install from the WordPress dashboard
- Sign in to WordPress with permission to manage plugins.
- Open Plugins → Add New.
- Search for Genesis Custom Blocks.
- Select Install Now, wait for the installation to finish, and choose Activate.
A manual installation from a downloaded WordPress.org package is also documented. On a production site, install and test the package on staging first, then promote the tested version with your normal backup and deployment process.
Plan the block before opening the editor
A block is easier to maintain when its data model is explicit. Write down what the editor must provide, what is optional, and what should be a controlled choice rather than free text. For example, a game feature card might need a title, a short description, a cover image, a store URL, a platform selector, and an optional rating range.
Keep the model narrow. Every field increases the number of states your template and CSS must handle. If editors need to compose arbitrary content, use inner blocks rather than creating a long list of one-off fields. If the same item repeats several times, decide whether a Pro repeater is justified or whether each item should be a separate nested block.
Build a custom block step by step
1. Add the block in WordPress Admin
Open the Genesis Custom Blocks administration screen and choose the option to add a new block. Give it a clear human-readable name, a unique slug, and a description that tells editors when to use it. The name appears in the inserter and editing interface; the slug becomes part of the block’s identity, so avoid changing it casually after the block is used in posts.

Use an editor-facing label that describes the content rather than the implementation. “Game review summary” is more useful to an editor than “PHP card v2.” Decide where the block should be available if the plugin version and your WordPress configuration expose category or placement controls.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →2. Add only the fields the editor needs
Within the block configuration, add fields in the order an editor should complete them. Give each field a descriptive label and help text. Choose a field type that constrains invalid input at the point of entry instead of making the PHP template guess what the value means.
The free plugin readme lists these field types: inner blocks, file, text, image, URL, toggle, textarea, select, range, radio, number, multi-select, email, color, and checkbox. The exact control labels can vary with the installed version, so compare the available controls in your dashboard with the current readme.
3. Select the right field type
| Need | Suitable field | Implementation note |
|---|---|---|
| A short heading, label, or name | Text | Keep the value short and escape it as text in the template. |
| Supporting copy or instructions | Textarea | Decide whether line breaks should be preserved or converted to paragraphs. |
| A destination link | URL plus a text field for its label | Validate and escape the URL and do not use the URL itself as the visible label by default. |
| An image selected from the media library | Image | Handle the empty state and provide meaningful alternative text. |
| A downloadable asset | File | Check that the output link and label make the file’s purpose clear. |
| A finite presentation choice | Select, radio, toggle, or checkbox | Use known values in the template and define a safe default for unexpected values. |
| A bounded numeric setting | Range or number | Apply sensible limits in the field configuration and validate again when rendering. |
| Editor-composed nested content | Inner blocks | Use this when the content should support other Gutenberg blocks rather than a fixed schema. |
4. Decide whether Genesis Pro fields are necessary
Genesis Pro adds repeater, taxonomy, post, user, rich text, and classic text fields, along with block-level import/export and support features. Use those controls when the content model genuinely needs repeating rows, relationships to WordPress objects, or richer editing behavior. Do not select Pro merely because a field could be convenient; every relationship or repeater introduces additional editorial and rendering cases.
A repeating list of game platforms, for example, may justify a repeater when each row has several coordinated values. A single platform choice is better represented by a select or radio field. A related article chosen from WordPress should use a post relationship field when available rather than asking editors to paste an ID into a text box.

5. Save the field configuration and record its names
Field names are the contract between the editor interface and the PHP template. Record the field names, expected value types, whether each field is required, and the default value. If a field is renamed later, update the template in the same change and test existing posts; old content can contain an empty value or the previous field key.
6. Create the PHP template
The repository FAQ refers to PHP block templates such as block-example.php. The precise directory and naming convention should be taken from the documentation for the version installed on your site, because a convention that worked in one release may not be the same in another. Place the template where the plugin expects it and keep the file with the plugin or site-specific code that owns the block, not in an unrelated theme folder.
Use the plugin’s documented developer functions to retrieve field values. The plugin presents these functions as an alternative to relying only on the built-in editor. Do not assume a field’s storage format: an image, relationship, repeater, and text value can each require different handling.
A safe template follows this sequence:
- Retrieve each field with the documented helper for the installed version.
- Normalize optional values and establish defaults.
- Escape text, attributes, URLs, and inline styles for their output context.
- Render semantic HTML with predictable classes.
- Omit empty elements instead of printing empty headings, links, or image tags.
The rendering portion can remain ordinary WordPress PHP. For example, once a documented field call has assigned a title and description to variables, the output can use context-appropriate escaping:
<?php if ( $title !== '' ) : ?>
<h2 class='game-card__title'><?php echo esc_html( $title ); ?></h2>
<?php endif; ?>
<?php if ( $description !== '' ) : ?>
<p class='game-card__description'><?php echo esc_html( $description ); ?></p>
<?php endif; ?>
This snippet illustrates escaping and conditional markup; use the exact Genesis Custom Blocks retrieval functions and variable assignments documented for your release. Avoid copying a helper name from an old tutorial without checking that it exists in the installed plugin.

7. Add CSS in the code’s owning plugin or theme
Give the block a small, namespaced class set such as game-card and game-card__title, then load the CSS from the plugin or theme that owns the block. Keep editor and front-end styles aligned so an editor sees a close approximation of the published result. If the block is intended to survive a theme change, storing its registration, template, and essential styles in a plugin reduces the chance that a redesign removes the block.
8. Insert and test the block
- Create or edit a post using the block editor.
- Open the inserter, search for the block name, and insert it.
- Fill every field, then test the same block with optional fields empty.
- Save a draft and view the front end at the intended viewport widths.
- Test an existing post after changing a field label, default, or template.
- Check accessibility basics: heading order, keyboard focus, link purpose, image alternative text, and sufficient contrast.
Rendering choices: static, dynamic, and hybrid behavior
A PHP template means the server participates in rendering. This is especially useful when output depends on current post data, related objects, permissions, or another value that can change after the post was saved. WordPress’s dynamic-block guidance describes a server-side rendering callback that supplies front-end markup; a dynamic block can use a null save function so the editor does not treat a stale copy of the markup as the authoritative output.
Use dynamic rendering deliberately. It can keep output current, but it also means a template or query change can alter previously published posts immediately. Cache behavior, permission checks, and performance of any related-content lookup belong in your testing plan. If the block contains only values entered by the editor and needs no server-side lookup, a simpler saved representation may be sufficient for your implementation.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need the Genesis Framework?
No. The official FAQ says Genesis Custom Blocks can run independently when the WordPress block editor is enabled. A Genesis theme or another Genesis product is not a prerequisite for creating or displaying the block.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The more important architectural choice is where your block code lives. WordPress’s block-development guidance recommends registering custom blocks in a plugin so they remain available when a theme changes. A theme can still supply design-specific CSS, but placing the block definition and template in a plugin is usually the safer choice for content that must survive redesigns.
Genesis Custom Blocks versus a hand-built JavaScript block
Both approaches produce Gutenberg blocks, but they optimize for different teams and data models.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

| Decision area | Genesis Custom Blocks | Hand-built JavaScript block |
|---|---|---|
| Authoring model | Administrators define fields in WordPress; editors fill those fields. | Developers define the edit interface in JavaScript and maintain the build. |
| Rendering model | PHP templates and documented plugin helpers can render field values on the server. | Often uses JavaScript edit/save code, with dynamic PHP possible when separately implemented. |
| Data complexity | Basic fields are available in the free plugin; Pro adds repeaters, relationships, and richer text controls. | Any schema can be coded, but every control and migration becomes development work. |
| Portability | Block code can be packaged in a plugin and kept independent of a theme. | Also portable when packaged as a plugin, provided its build assets and dependencies are deployed. |
| Maintenance | Field names, template conventions, and plugin-version behavior must stay aligned. | JavaScript source, compiled assets, WordPress APIs, and saved markup must stay aligned. |
Choose Genesis Custom Blocks when the team values dashboard-defined fields and PHP templates, when the block’s structure is well described by fields, or when avoiding a JavaScript build is a priority. Choose a hand-built block when the editing experience needs custom interactions that fields cannot express, or when the team already maintains a JavaScript block system.
Common failure modes and fixes
The block does not appear in the inserter
- Confirm the plugin is active.
- Confirm the post type uses the block editor.
- Search by the block’s exact display name and check any category or availability settings.
- Verify that the block definition was saved and that the slug is valid and unique.
The editor shows fields but the front end is empty
- Check that the PHP template is in the location and filename convention required by the installed version.
- Compare every field key used by the template with the key configured in the admin screen.
- Verify that the template calls the documented retrieval function for the field type.
- Temporarily test one required text field, then add optional fields back one at a time.
Text is displayed incorrectly or markup is unsafe
- Use text escaping for headings, labels, and descriptions.
- Use attribute escaping for values placed in HTML attributes.
- Use URL validation and URL escaping for links.
- Do not print editor-entered HTML unless the field and sanitization rules explicitly support it.
An image, file, relationship, or repeater fails
- Inspect the value shape documented for that field type instead of treating it as a string.
- Handle an unset or deleted media item.
- For repeaters, iterate only over a confirmed array and define behavior when there are zero rows.
- For post, user, or taxonomy fields, check that the referenced object still exists and that the current viewer may see it.
A theme change breaks the block
Move the block registration and template into a plugin, retain stable field names, and keep theme-specific styling separate from the block’s required structure. Test old posts after activating the new theme; a block can remain in post content while its template or CSS is no longer available.
A plugin update changes the output
Record the plugin version with your deployment notes, test updates on staging, and compare the installed documentation with your template’s assumptions. Pay particular attention to field retrieval helpers, template discovery, Pro-only controls, and the shape of relationship values.
A maintainable release checklist
- The block has a clear name, stable slug, description, and documented purpose.
- Every field has a reason to exist, a label, a type, and a default or empty-state rule.
- The template uses the installed version’s documented helper functions.
- Output is escaped for its context and empty optional fields do not create broken markup.
- CSS covers both the editor preview and the front end without broad theme selectors.
- The block has been tested with complete, partial, and malformed-or-missing data.
- Existing posts still render after field and template changes.
- Registration and templates are stored in a plugin when the block must outlive a theme.
- Dynamic output has been reviewed for caching, permissions, and current-data behavior.
- There is a staging backup and a rollback path before a production plugin or PHP change.
What the available evidence does not establish
Canonical plugin materials identify the workflow, field types, compatibility metadata, and Pro additions, but they do not provide an independent usage statistic or performance benchmark. You should therefore evaluate rendering speed, editor responsiveness, and scale on your own content and hosting stack rather than treating Genesis Custom Blocks as inherently faster or slower than a JavaScript implementation.
For a field-driven Gutenberg component that should be editable by site administrators and rendered with familiar PHP, Genesis Custom Blocks offers a direct path from data model to reusable block. Its success depends less on a particular theme than on disciplined field naming, safe template output, version-aware testing, and keeping the block’s code where future site changes can find it.
