Build an AWS-native operational dashboard by mapping your media workflow to its actual resources, selecting CloudWatch metrics with resource-level dimensions, adding focused widgets, and setting alarms for conditions your team can act on. Keep cost analysis separate: CloudWatch dashboards and alarms help operators diagnose service health, while AWS’s Media Services Insights Hub uses cost and usage data for spending analysis.
Choose the right monitoring view for the question
| View | Best for | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Service console | Checking a service’s own view of its resources and activity. | Console visibility can differ from CloudWatch metric coverage. For MediaLive, the service console shows only some metrics; CloudWatch can show all MediaLive metrics. See AWS MediaLive metric viewing documentation. |
| CloudWatch custom dashboard | Operational health, resource-level investigation, and incident response across the metrics you select. | Choose dimensions and periods for each service. A dashboard provides visibility; pair it with CloudWatch alarms for threshold-based notifications or actions. See CloudWatch dashboards. |
| Media Services Insights Hub | Cross-service cost and usage analysis. | This QuickSight dashboard is driven by Cost and Usage Report data and requires Cloud Intelligence Dashboards foundations and CUR/Athena/QuickSight resources. It is not a substitute for live operational metric alarms. See AWS Media Services Insights Hub guidance. |
Build an operational dashboard around your workflow
1. Map services, Regions, and resources
Start with the actual path your video takes through AWS. List the services in use, the Regions where they run, and the resource identifiers operators need when troubleshooting. Depending on the workflow, these could include a MediaLive channel, MediaConnect flow, MediaPackage channel or endpoint, MediaConvert queue or job, and MediaTailor resource. Do not assume every workflow uses every service.
Decide which workflow stages and resources belong on the dashboard before adding metrics. A single portfolio-wide overview can show broad signals, but it may conceal the channel, endpoint, flow, queue, or job context needed to find a fault. Use focused dashboards or groups of widgets where that makes resource diagnosis clearer.
2. Select metrics and dimensions that match operator questions
CloudWatch metrics are organized by service namespace and dimension combinations. Dimensions identify the resource or grouping represented by a metric, so select the combinations that let an operator move from a service-level signal to the resource that needs attention. AWS documents MediaConvert metric groupings for operations, queues, and jobs; MediaPackage has service-specific dimensions, including channel and endpoint-related dimensions. Consult the current documentation for the service and metric you intend to graph: MediaConvert CloudWatch metrics and MediaPackage CloudWatch metrics.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For each candidate metric, ask what decision it supports: detecting a stalled stage, spotting an increase in errors, or investigating demand at a particular endpoint. A metric without the right dimensions may be visible but not useful for locating the affected resource.
3. Create widgets for operational questions
Use time-series widgets to reveal change over time and status or request-oriented panels when they help operators assess endpoint behavior. A concrete example appears in AWS’s MediaPackage MSS troubleshooting guide: it builds a CloudWatch dashboard using EgressRequestCount and HTTP status code ranges. That pattern is specific to the documented MSS endpoint scenario; adapt the namespace, dimensions, Region, statistic, and period to the endpoint and current service documentation rather than copying its metric configuration blindly. See AWS MediaPackage MSS troubleshooting.

- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Keep each widget tied to a question and make its resource scope clear in the title or surrounding layout. For example, separate a channel-level health view from endpoint request and status signals instead of combining unrelated metrics under an ambiguous label.
4. Add alarms for conditions that need a response
Dashboards help people see what is happening. CloudWatch alarms watch configured thresholds and can notify people or trigger actions. Set alarms only for conditions that have an operational response, and choose thresholds using your service-level objectives and validated operating history. There is no universal threshold in the AWS guidance that is appropriate for every media workflow.

Before relying on an alarm, verify its metric namespace and dimensions refer to the intended resource, its period fits the metric’s publication behavior, and the notification or action reaches the correct responder. An alarm configured on the wrong dimension or an unexplained threshold can create noise without improving incident response. See AWS CloudWatch alarm notification guidance.
5. Validate metric cadence and retention
Do not assume every AWS media metric updates or can be retrieved on the same cadence. AWS states that the CloudWatch console’s minimum refresh rate for MediaLive is 30 seconds. Most MediaConnect metrics can be accessed in periods as short as one second, while MediaConnect Gateway metrics require a period of at least one minute. These are service-specific technical specifications, not a guarantee of end-to-end incident detection time; check the current service guidance for the metric and retrieval path you use. See MediaLive metric viewing and MediaConnect CloudWatch metrics.

AWS’s MediaPackage and MediaConnect metric guidance reports 15-month retention for the cited service metrics or statistics. That figure is specific to the cited services and material; do not assume it applies to every AWS Media Services metric, API, or dashboard. Confirm retention for the particular metric and data path you need. See MediaPackage monitoring and MediaConnect monitoring.

Operational telemetry answers whether a resource is behaving as expected and where to investigate. Cost reporting answers which services and usage contributed to spend. The Media Services Insights Hub is a QuickSight dashboard built from Cost and Usage Report data; its documented coverage includes MediaConnect, MediaConvert, MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaTailor. AWS lists Cloud Intelligence Dashboards foundations and CUR/Athena/QuickSight resources among its prerequisites. Check the current setup guidance and pricing for the AWS services your account will use before deployment: Media Services Insights Hub.

Use the Hub for cost and usage analysis, not as a real-time health panel or replacement for CloudWatch alarms. Conversely, a CloudWatch operational dashboard is not automatically a complete cross-service bill analysis. The two views complement each other because they answer different questions.
Control dashboard scope and cost
Metric periods, refresh behavior, and available dimensions vary across services. CloudWatch dashboards, metric retrieval, alarms, and the CUR/QuickSight infrastructure involved in cost analysis may have charges based on the features and configuration used. No account-specific deployment or cost estimate is established here. Review the current Amazon CloudWatch pricing and applicable AWS pricing for your chosen cost-reporting architecture, then verify charges against your account and Region.
Or let it run in the cloud
