They are database estimates—not independently timed playthroughs—and the list does not specify consistently whether each figure means finishing the main story, doing more of the game, or another completion category. Treat the numbers as a way to find substantial games, not a definitive stopwatch ranking.
How to read the estimates
The hours below are figures published by Destructoid on October 2, 2023, with estimates attributed to HowLongToBeat. The article does not provide game-level sample sizes or a named, dated aggregate statistic, nor does it document the completion category, treatment of optional content, or version for every entry. Those omissions matter: a story-focused run, a completionist run, and an open-ended simulation are different measures.
So this is best read as a list of long-play candidates, not a precise ranking of how long every player will take. Genre also shapes what “complete” means: a campaign has a finish, while a simulation can be played for as long as you choose.
Long SNES games and their reported hours
These are the visible entries from Destructoid’s 2023 list, not a newly calculated ranking. The hours are attributed estimates, rather than individual test results.

Which games are long if you do not want an RPG?
From the entries shown above, SimCity 2000, Harvest Moon, and Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen offer alternatives to a conventional role-playing campaign. They extend play in different ways: city management, farming simulation, and tactical strategy. Their reported hours should not be treated as equivalent measures of “finishing,” especially for open-ended play.

Why the ranking is debatable
Community discussion around long SNES games illustrates the scope problem: players disagree about whether titles such as Chrono Trigger belong on a longest-games list, and some point to Japan-only strategy RPGs as candidates. Those comments are anecdotes, not completion-time data, but they highlight how region, genre, optional content, and replay can change what a list includes.
Geography is important as well. The SNES library includes Japanese-only releases alongside games released in North America and Europe. Time Extension’s catalog records regional release dates for titles including Terranigma, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy III, Secret of Mana, and Lufia II; availability therefore depends on which region’s library you mean. A list based on a particular set of releases cannot automatically stand for every SNES game worldwide.

Where to play selected titles
Nintendo’s official Super NES Classic Edition manuals catalog includes selected games discussed here, including EarthBound and Secret of Mana. The Classic Edition is a curated way to play its included titles, not a device that provides access to the entire SNES library. Check current availability before seeking one out.
