Neither reminders nor any promotion tactic guarantees attendance, so focus on a specific, accurate promise and a cadence you can sustain.
1. Give viewers a reason to be there live
Start with one sentence that answers: “Why should someone watch this live instead of catching the replay?” For a gaming stream, that might be a live Q&A after a major game update, a first look at a new build, a community challenge, or a viewer-voted decision. These are programming examples, not proven ways to increase attendance.
Make the event title, thumbnail, and description reinforce the same promise. Be specific about what will happen and avoid implying a reveal, guest, giveaway, or audience interaction that you have not actually planned. If the stream is mainly a regular play session, say so; an accurate expectation is more useful than an inflated one.
2. Schedule the stream and share its watch page
- Schedule it in YouTube Studio. Create the upcoming livestream using the available scheduling controls. Check the event title, description, thumbnail, audience settings, and start time before saving.
- Copy the scheduled stream’s watch-page URL. Use this as the single destination for announcements so viewers can reach the event and, when available, opt into a reminder.
- Share it early. YouTube recommends sharing a live-stream link at least 48 hours before going live. This is a recommendation, not a rule that guarantees reach or notification delivery. See YouTube’s live-stream promotion guidance.
- Ask viewers to select “Notify me.” A scheduled stream may appear as upcoming in subscribers’ feeds, and viewers can choose Notify me. YouTube says subscribers may also encounter public events in their homepage feed or in “What to Watch Next”; do not promise that every subscriber will see the event or receive a notification.
YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance also says streams scheduled to start within the next 24 hours can be surfaced for notification opt-in while viewers watch Shorts. Treat that as another possible discovery point, not a substitute for sharing the link yourself.

3. Use a simple, repeatable promotion cadence
YouTube suggests promoting through social media, channel surfaces, and an embedded stream URL on a website. Choose the places your actual audience uses; you do not need to post everywhere. A practical cadence is an editorial suggestion, not a YouTube-prescribed or proven optimum:
- When you schedule: Announce the event with its date, start time and watch-page link.
- Several days ahead: Share a short preview that shows what viewers can expect and why it is happening live.
- Near the event: Post a useful reminder, such as the question you will answer or the challenge you will attempt.
- On the day: Share one final reminder with the event link and start time.
Keep each message relevant and concise. Avoid repeating identical posts so often that they become noise, especially in spaces where people did not opt in to frequent updates. YouTube’s recommendations include social sharing, embedding the stream URL on a website, and displaying upcoming events in the channel’s Live section: Promote your live stream.

4. Add a trailer if your channel is eligible
YouTube lets eligible creators add a trailer to a scheduled stream’s watch page. The trailer gives visitors a preview before the event; it is optional, and you should confirm that the feature and its eligibility requirements still apply to your channel in Studio before planning around it.
- YouTube Help states that the trailer must be between 15 seconds and 3 minutes.
- The guidance lists eligibility as more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes.
- Use a supported video type and, where possible, match the stream’s aspect ratio and resolution.
- Make sure the trailer complies with copyright rules and Community Guidelines.
These requirements come from YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance; interface labels and eligibility can change, so verify them in YouTube Studio. If the trailer option is unavailable, use a short teaser post or video instead.

5. Make recurring streams easy to anticipate
If you stream on a regular schedule, publish a cadence viewers can remember and maintain. YouTube advises creators to choose a consistent, sustainable schedule, communicate it to fans, and consider showing it on the channel banner. If a stream time changes, tell viewers rather than leaving an outdated promise in place. The guidance does not quantify how much consistency affects attendance; the practical benefit is that people have a clear expectation of when to look for you.
For a gaming channel, a recurring format can help make the schedule meaningful: for example, a weekly community lobby or a regular post-update discussion. Keep the schedule realistic for your time and energy; consistency should not require announcing events you cannot reliably deliver.
6. Keep the promotion focused on the event, not tags
Tags are not a substitute for a shareable event page or a clear announcement. YouTube says tags play a minimal role in discovery except when content is commonly misspelled. 7. Know when Premieres and Live Redirect fit
Premiere: for a scheduled video release
A Premiere is a scheduled release of a video, not an ordinary livestream. It has a pre-release landing page that can be shared in advance, and YouTube suggests promoting it through posts, social media, and pinned comments while asking viewers to set a reminder. For viewers who set a Premiere reminder, YouTube says notifications arrive about 30 minutes before it starts and again when it begins. Live Redirect: for a handoff after your stream
Live Redirect can send viewers from your stream to a Premiere or another live stream when yours ends. It is a handoff, not a pre-event reminder. YouTube’s guidance says the creator sending viewers must have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes; if the destination is another channel’s live stream, that channel must allow redirects. YouTube’s official guidance offers recommendations, not head-to-head performance results. It does not establish that one of these tactics produces a particular attendance increase or percentage lift.
Troubleshooting common promotion problems
- The event page is hard to find: Make sure you are sharing the scheduled watch-page URL, not a general channel link or an unrelated video.
- Viewers say they did not get a reminder: A reminder is an opt-in opportunity, not guaranteed delivery to every subscriber. Ask viewers to visit the event page and select Notify me where the option appears, and retain your own announcement plan.
- The trailer option is missing: Check the current eligibility requirements and available controls in Studio. If the channel does not qualify or the feature is unavailable, publish a teaser through another suitable channel.
- Promotion feels repetitive: Keep the same event destination but change the useful information in each reminder, and reduce frequency where audiences have not opted in.
- The schedule changes: Update the event details where possible and communicate the new time in the places you used to announce it; do not leave old posts as the only information viewers have.
