In the United States, you generally cannot buy a digital PS4 or PS5 game on your PlayStation account and transfer its license to a friend’s separate account. The practical solution is to buy a PlayStation Store gift card in the friend’s account region. They redeem the 12-digit code on their own account, then use the wallet balance to buy the correct game and edition.
The easiest method: send a PlayStation Store gift card
PlayStation’s current US gifting guidance directs buyers to PlayStation Store gift cards rather than a direct “buy as a gift” checkout. Gift-card credit can be used for games, add-ons, expansions, PlayStation Plus, virtual currency, and pre-orders. See the official PlayStation gift-card page.

- Confirm the friend’s PlayStation account region. Their account’s country matters, not merely where they currently live.
- Open the official PlayStation gift-card page and select Shop gift cards or Buy gift cards.
- Choose a digital or printable card, then select its value, design, recipient details, and message. PlayStation’s linked digital checkout partner is CashStar.
- Choose enough credit for the intended edition, current price, and applicable tax. Prices vary by edition, platform, promotions, and timing.
- Send the code privately by email or message, or print it as a physical gift. Never post an unused code publicly.
The recipient—not the buyer—chooses the game on their own account. That makes this safer than purchasing a specific PS4 or PS5 listing when you do not know which edition or platform version they need.
How much should you give?
Check the game’s live PlayStation Store listing before buying the card. Look for the platform, edition, bundle contents, and any separate PS5 upgrade. Standard, Deluxe, Gold, Ultimate, cross-generation, and add-on listings can have different prices. Sales may also end before the recipient redeems the code.

If you know the exact price, add a small margin for tax or a price change. If you are unsure, give enough for the expected edition and tell the recipient they can use any remaining balance on another eligible Store item. Do not promise that a particular denomination will cover the purchase without checking the recipient’s region and current checkout total.
How your friend redeems the code
PlayStation voucher codes are 12 digits and must match the recipient’s account region. PlayStation provides current instructions on its voucher redemption support page.
On PS5
- Open PlayStation Store.
- Press the Triangle button to open the Store menu.
- Select More (…) > Redeem Code.
- Enter the 12-digit code and select Redeem.
- Buy the game from PlayStation Store, then download it immediately or later from the game library.
On PS4
- Open PlayStation Store.
- Scroll to the bottom of the left sidebar and select Redeem Codes.
- Enter the 12-digit code.
- Select Continue, then confirm with Confirm or Yes.
- Select Continue > Download, or download the game later.
In a web browser
- Open PlayStation Store and sign in.
- Select the profile icon at the top.
- Select Redeem Code.
- Enter the code and select Continue.
In the PlayStation App
- Open the app and select the PS Store icon.
- Open the menu and select Redeem Code.
- Enter the 12-digit code and select Continue.
Check the game details before buying
Ask the recipient to inspect the Store listing before spending the balance:

- Is it the PS4 version, PS5 version, or a cross-generation bundle?
- Is the listing for the full game rather than an add-on, expansion, season pass, or virtual currency?
- Does the edition include the desired bonuses or expansions?
- Does it require PlayStation Plus or another separate product?
- Is the title available to the recipient under their age rating and parental-control settings?
PlayStation recommends checking the Store description for the platform, edition, and requirements before purchase. The recipient should also check whether they already own the game or a qualifying version.
Can a gift card be used during a sale?
Yes. PlayStation says gift-card credit can be used for games on sale and other eligible Store products. Giving the code before a major sale can let your friend choose the best price, but do not assume the sale will still be active when they redeem it.
Why you should not buy the game on your own account
A digital Store transaction is applied to the account that completes the purchase. PlayStation’s March 2026 US Terms of Service describe digital purchases as personal licenses that are generally non-transferable.

Buying the game yourself and giving your friend your login details does not transfer the game to them. It exposes your account and payment information, leaves the purchase tied to your account, and can cause security, privacy, licensing, and access problems. Do not share your PlayStation password or buy an account preloaded with games.

Why console sharing is not normal gifting
PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play can let other users play games purchased by an account holder on one activated PS5. On PS4, activating a primary PS4 can provide similar access to users of that console.
These features are designed for access on a qualifying console, not for transferring a game to a friend’s separate account and console. They may require account access, activation changes, and disruption to your own setup. PlayStation also says ordinary game and Plus sharing is not a way to share with a friend on an unrelated console. Use a gift card instead.

PlayStation Plus is a different kind of gift
The recipient can use gift-card credit to purchase PlayStation Plus. A subscription may provide online multiplayer and access to selected monthly or catalog games depending on the plan and current availability, but it is not a permanent gift of a particular game. Access to subscription benefits can depend on keeping the membership active. See PlayStation Plus support.
Selected Plus benefits can be shared on one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled and one primary PS4, but that does not make Plus a normal gift for a friend on another console. More details are available in PlayStation’s sharing guidance.
Region, child-account, and refund warnings
Region restrictions
A US gift card should be redeemed by a US-region account. A card from another country may be rejected even if the recipient is physically in that country temporarily. Confirm the account region before purchasing; PlayStation accounts generally cannot simply be switched to another country.

Child and family accounts
For a child account, a wallet top-up voucher may need to be redeemed on the family manager’s account. The family manager controls the child’s spending limit. A card can redeem successfully while an age-restricted game remains unavailable because of parental controls or account restrictions.
Refunds
Do not assume a gift-card or Store purchase can be reversed. PlayStation’s terms describe Store purchases as generally final, subject to the applicable cancellation policy and law, and describe wallet funds as generally non-refundable and non-transferable. The retailer may have separate rules, especially after a code has been revealed or redeemed. Check both the retailer’s policy and PlayStation Store support.
If the voucher code does not work
- Confirm that the code has 12 digits and was entered carefully.
- Check that the card’s region matches the PlayStation account region.
- Look for mistyped or easily confused characters.
- Confirm that the code has not already been redeemed; voucher codes are one-time use.
- If it is a physical card, verify that it was activated at purchase when activation is required.
- Check the account’s transaction history to see whether the balance was already added.
- Sign out and back in, then restart the console, app, or browser.
- If it still fails, contact PlayStation Support or the retailer. Keep the receipt and card or order details.
Never send an unused code to someone claiming to be support through an unsolicited message, and never display it in a screenshot.
Other options
- Physical disc: Best for a wrapped gift or when you want to choose the exact title. The recipient needs a disc-capable PS4 or PS5; a PS5 Digital Edition cannot use a disc without compatible hardware.
- PlayStation Plus: Suitable for someone who wants online multiplayer or subscription catalog access, not guaranteed permanent access to one specific game.
- Game-specific voucher: If an authorized retailer offers one, verify that it is a full PlayStation Store game code for the recipient’s region—not an add-on, trial, beta, or account. Avoid unofficial code marketplaces, VPN workarounds, and preloaded accounts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I gift a game to someone in another country?
Only if the voucher is valid for the recipient’s PlayStation account region. A US gift card may not work on an account registered to another country.
Can I transfer a game I already bought?
Normally no. The purchase remains associated with the purchasing account, and PlayStation describes digital licenses as generally non-transferable.
Can a gift card buy physical hardware?
A PlayStation Store gift card is for eligible Store content and subscriptions. It is not a general-purpose payment method for console hardware.
