Before you choose a listing
Check the seller, not just the price
Read the seller’s feedback, ratings, reputation, and contact details. Search the marketplace and seller name alongside terms such as “complaint” or “review.” PlayStation recommends checking seller ratings and reputation, while the FTC cautions that an expensive item offered at a very low price may be fake. A low price is a reason to investigate, not proof of a scam.
For a new console, PlayStation recommends buying from authorized retailers. A marketplace can host third-party sellers, so do not assume that a listing is sold by an authorized retailer just because it appears on a familiar platform. Verify who is actually selling the console.

Read the listing closely
Prefer clear photos of the actual console from several angles over stock images. Confirm the model, condition, and included components. Check whether it is described as new, used, refurbished, or “as is,” and verify whether accessories, cables, manuals, and packaging are included. Save the listing and any changes to its description.
Ask questions in writing before paying. For a used PS5, request a recent video showing it powering on, its ports and buttons being tested, and a connection to the internet. If it has a disc drive, ask to see that tested too. Keep the seller’s answers and video with your purchase records.

Know your return and dispute options
Read the marketplace’s delivery, return, refund, dispute, and buyer-protection rules before checkout. Confirm they apply to this seller and item, and note every deadline. Pay and communicate in ways that preserve recourse
Use the marketplace’s own checkout or another payment method with a recourse process. The FTC identifies credit cards and secure online payment systems with buyer protection as safer options. Do not pay outside the platform if that could remove its protections, and avoid seller requests for wire transfers, gift cards, cash reload cards, or cryptocurrency, which can be difficult to recover.

Keep copies of the listing, messages, payment confirmation, shipping details, and delivery packaging. Check the claim or return deadline as soon as the package arrives, so you know how quickly to act if the console differs from the listing or does not work.
How to inspect a used PS5
Compare the item with the listing
When it arrives, compare the console with the listing photos and any seller video. Look for physical damage, image-quality problems, signs of overheating, broken warranty seals, and a serial number that is missing or appears altered. Sony’s U.S. warranty terms exclude products whose serial number has been altered, defaced, or removed.

Test operation and PlayStation access
Power on the console and test its ports and buttons. If it has a disc drive, test that as well. Check the picture for visible problems and connect the console to the internet. Confirm that it can access PlayStation services; a console that powers on is not necessarily usable online.
Ask whether the system has been reported lost or stolen. PlayStation warns that a product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. Ask the seller to deactivate the console and remove their access before the sale is complete.

Stop if the seller or item fails basic checks
Do not proceed if the seller refuses reasonable questions or a basic demonstration, asks you to move payment off-platform, or the delivered console does not match the listing. PlayStation advises buyers to trust their intuition and walk away when something feels wrong.

Do not assume that a third-party used PS5 has Sony warranty coverage. Sony’s U.S. buying guide says, “Third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty.” Sony’s U.S. PS5 limited hardware warranty is for the original purchaser and lasts one year from the original purchase in the United States and Canada, subject to its terms and exclusions. Warranty service requires valid proof of purchase. The terms exclude, among other cases, products sold and clearly marked “as is” or with faults, and systems with altered, defaced, or removed serial numbers. Check the current terms for your location and the exact console.
Sony Certified Refurbished is a distinct option, not a label that applies to every marketplace listing described as refurbished. PlayStation says its certified refurbished products are cleaned, inspected, and tested; include necessary accessories, cables, and manuals; may have minor cosmetic imperfections; and come with its standard one-year limited warranty. Confirm the warranty provider, eligible purchaser, duration, proof requirements, and return terms for the particular item.
Compare a third-party used PS5 with Sony Certified Refurbished
Before choosing, compare the total cost and the protections attached to the specific console. The details below describe Sony’s stated Certified Refurbished program; they do not establish the condition or warranty of unrelated marketplace listings.

What to do if the purchase goes wrong
- Contact the seller promptly through the marketplace and describe the problem in writing.

- If you paid by card, contact the card issuer about disputing the charge and ask what deadlines or documentation apply.

These steps do not guarantee a refund; the available remedy depends on the marketplace’s rules, payment method, and applicable law.
