Do not assume a visual novel demo save will carry over. Transfer support depends on the exact game, platform, account, and developer setup: some games offer a transfer prompt, while others explicitly do not support transferring saves. Check the game’s official instructions before buying, and keep the demo save until you have confirmed the full game loads the progress you want.
Check the exact game’s transfer policy first
Look up the official store listing, publisher support page, developer FAQ, and recent patch notes for the specific game and edition. Search for terms such as “demo save,” “transfer progress,” “carry over,” and “continue from demo.” A publisher’s instructions for another title do not establish compatibility for this one.
Official policies vary. A Square Enix support page documents a demo whose save cannot be carried over, while other title-specific pages describe supported transfers. Square Enix’s no-transfer FAQ is one example; consult the page for the game you intend to buy.
Verify what transfers and what conditions apply
Before starting the full game, look for answers to each of these questions in the game’s own instructions:

- What carries over? Confirm whether the transfer resumes the story at the same scene with the same choices, or carries only selected data such as gallery unlocks.
- Is the platform or account restricted? Some instructions require the same platform, account, or console used for the demo. These are title-specific conditions, not guarantees made by a storefront.
- Does the full game need an update? A transfer prompt may depend on having the current full-game build installed.
- When does the prompt appear? Check whether the game asks on first launch and what its confirmation button says. Published examples use labels such as “Load Demo Saved Data” or “Carry over.”
- Can an existing full-game save block transfer? In one Square Enix support case, demo data transfers only when no full-game save data already exists. Do not create a new full-game save until you have checked the game’s sequence.
For example, Bandai Namco’s 2026 guide for Echoes of Aincrad says to update and launch the full game, then select “Carry over” when it detects demo data; it also limits transfer to the same platform. That procedure applies to that game, not to visual novels generally. Read the game-specific guide.
Use cloud saves only when the game’s instructions require them
Steam Cloud synchronizes files that the developer has configured, typically after a game exits. Steamworks also provides a shared-cloud-app-ID feature that developers commonly use to share demo and full-game saves. Neither feature means every Steam demo automatically shares compatible save files with its full game.

On Steam Deck, a Square Enix support example specifically instructs players to enable Cloud Save Data for both the demo and full game. Follow cloud steps only when the game’s official support instructions call for them; cloud sync cannot make an incompatible save format load. Steamworks documentation on Steam Cloud explains the developer-configured behavior.
Follow a safe transfer sequence
- Read the game’s current official transfer instructions and confirm the platform, account, and save-state requirements.
- Leave the demo save in place. Do not delete it or manually copy files unless the developer supplies exact steps.
- Install the updated full game if the instructions require an update, and enable the specified cloud settings if applicable.
- Launch the full game in the stated account and on the stated platform. If a transfer prompt appears, read it before choosing whether to load or carry over the demo data.
- Confirm the result in-game by checking the story position, choices, or unlocks that the game says should transfer. Keep the demo save until you have verified the intended progress loaded.
If no prompt appears, stop before overwriting or deleting saves. Recheck the game’s support page and the stated account, platform, first-launch, and existing-save conditions; contact the publisher if the official procedure still does not work.

Understand the difference between story saves and unlocks
A save slot records a particular playthrough state, while some games store persistent information—such as gallery unlocks—separately. Ren’Py, for example, has a persistent-data system that developers can use to share selected values between games. A gallery item appearing in the full game therefore does not prove that a route can resume at the same scene.
Ask specifically whether the game transfers route position and choices, bonus unlocks, settings, or achievements. The developer may handle each category differently. Ren’Py’s persistent-data documentation describes this separate system.

If the visual novel uses Ren’Py, treat save locations as diagnostic
Ren’Py’s documentation says save compatibility is not guaranteed, even between releases. Developers can also configure the save directory, so finding a save file does not prove another build can load it. Use the game maker’s transfer instructions rather than manually moving a file based on its location.

What to do when the policy is unclear
If the publisher does not say whether transfer is supported, treat it as unconfirmed—not as a yes. Ask the developer or publisher about the exact demo and full-game builds, storefront, and platform. A general engine feature or cloud setting cannot settle a title-specific compatibility question.
