If the item is sold out and you turn to resale, check the exact edition, actual-item photos, seller history, full terms, and payment protections before paying. Convention merchandise rules vary by event and seller; badge-transfer rules are not a blanket ban on reselling merchandise.
Check official channels before looking at resale
Search the specific convention’s merchandise page and the publisher or vendor announcement for the item you want. Those sources can establish whether an item is actually being sold as an exclusive, where it is sold, and whether access depends on a preorder, pickup appointment, queue, or walk-up stock. A generic “Comic-Con exclusive” label in a resale listing does not establish any of those details.
New York Comic Con 2026: check the event and publisher pages
NYCC’s official merchandise page lists apparel, lanyards, stickers, pins, plushes, bags, and other goods. It identifies official merchandise booth #4505. It also says merchandise preordered but not shipped before the show, or ordered through the mobile app, should be picked up at booth #4600. The page was current when accessed on October 7, 2026; check it again for changes before attending.
DC’s September 30, 2026 announcement says DC Shop would offer limited-edition goods at NYCC while supplies last, with digital queueing for select activities. Listed products include replica rings, light-up keychains, shirts, hats, jackets, and hoodies. DC also announced limited printings of special-edition foil-cover comics and exclusive hardcover editions. Confirm the precise edition and current availability through the official seller; the announcement does not establish that any particular edition is available from another retailer.

San Diego Comic-Con 2026: distinguish guaranteed pickup from walk-up stock
For its SDCC 2026 exclusives, TAMASHII NATIONS said preorder pickup was the only guaranteed way to secure event-exclusive items during the convention. Walk-up quantities could vary by day, and access was not guaranteed. These terms apply to that vendor’s SDCC offer, not to every booth or convention.
TAMASHII also announced limited-edition availability of its SDCC 2026 exclusives through TAMASHII NATIONS ONLINE SHOP and TAMASHII NATIONS STORE NEW YORK after the event. That is an example of an official post-event route, not a promise that other vendors will restock their items.

Choose a buying route based on certainty and recourse
Official and resale routes involve different trade-offs. A preorder or confirmed pickup can improve availability certainty; resale may offer access after a sellout, but depends on the seller’s evidence and terms. Compare the complete cost and protections, not just the listed price.

Vet a resale listing before you pay
The Federal Trade Commission recommends checking a marketplace seller and the terms of the transaction rather than relying on a listing’s appearance. Use this checklist for the exact copy being offered:

- Match the exact edition and contents. Compare the edition name, artwork or cover, stated quantity, condition, and included components with the official announcement or vendor listing. Do not treat “exclusive” as a sufficient description.
- Request clear photos of the actual item. Stock photos do not show whether the seller has the item or reveal its condition. Ask for images of the item, packaging, edition marks, and any damage or missing parts. Photos help you assess a listing but do not guarantee authenticity.
- Review seller history using more than a star score. Read recent feedback and comments. Search the seller or site name with terms such as “complaint” or “scam,” and consider whether the account’s history fits the item being sold. The FTC’s advice on spotting and reporting scams is useful alongside marketplace-specific checks.
- Calculate the full price and read the terms. Include shipping, taxes, fees, delivery estimate, return eligibility, and who pays return shipping. Ask questions in writing and save the answers. A low price for branded merchandise is a warning sign, not proof of a scam; the FTC advises shoppers to be cautious about unusually low prices for branded goods.
- Keep the deal and messages on the platform. An off-platform payment can cost you access to the marketplace’s protections. Prefer a credit card or another secure method only after confirming that its buyer protection applies to this seller and item. Do not use gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or another hard-to-reverse payment when a seller insists on it.
- Save records and watch deadlines. Keep the listing, item photos, seller messages, payment confirmation, shipping promise, and receipts. Check the platform’s deadlines for claims and returns. If something goes wrong, contact the seller and platform promptly; dispute the charge with your card issuer when appropriate.
- Treat HTTPS as basic security, not proof. Encryption protects information sent to a site; it does not establish that the site or seller is legitimate. Scammers can use encrypted websites too.
- Use seller disclosures as one check, not an authenticity certificate. The FTC explains that the INFORM Consumers Act disclosure requirements cover many high-volume third-party sellers of new or unused consumer products, not every seller. Marketplaces must also provide a way to report suspicious activity; disclosure does not prove that an item is genuine.
Know which Comic-Con rules apply
Comic-Con International’s Convention Policies state: “Retail sales are strictly limited to the exhibitors in the Comic-Con Exhibit Hall.” That is a venue retail policy. Its terms separately prohibit selling, trading, transferring, or sharing a Comic-Con badge, purchase code, or complimentary pass. Those credential rules should not be read as a universal prohibition on secondary-market merchandise. Other conventions and vendors may set different merchandise rules, so check the relevant event and seller terms.

The FTC reported that online shopping scams were the second-most reported type of scam to the agency in 2022. That is a dated, agency-wide statistic—not a rate for convention merchandise buyers or a measure of scam risk in 2026. It is a reason to scrutinize a seller and payment route, not a way to estimate the odds that any particular listing is fraudulent. See the FTC’s 2023 report on online shopping scam reports.
