Buy only after you have checked evidence of the actual game, the seller’s recent history, and the marketplace’s rules for this specific transaction. Pay through the marketplace, save the listing and messages, and note the deadline for returns or claims. Those checks matter because marketplaces do not all offer the same protections.
How can you tell whether a physical game listing is legitimate?
Start with the item, not the star rating. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises buyers to look for photographs of the actual item: stock images cannot show the condition of a used game or establish that the seller has it. Read the complete description and check whether the game is used, refurbished, sold “as is,” or missing components.

- Look for clear photos of the game and the specific components you expect, such as its case, cover art, manual, or inserts.
- Compare those photos with the written description. Ask for more images if something important is not shown.
- Check whether the listing identifies the edition or region/version you want, and ask if it is unclear.
- Treat a price that is unusually low for an expensive game as a reason to investigate. A low price alone does not prove a listing is fraudulent.
These checks help you judge what is being offered; they are not a formal authentication test. No universal method for authenticating every physical game is established here, so take extra care with rare or high-priced releases.

What should you check about the seller and marketplace?
Review the seller in context
Read recent buyer comments and look at the context behind them rather than relying on a star average alone. Search the marketplace and the seller’s name alongside terms such as “complaint” or “review.” Check the seller’s contact details, shipping fees, and return policy. Ask questions before buying and keep the answers in the platform’s message system.

Confirm the transaction is covered
Marketplace protections differ: some leave payment, delivery, and refunds to the buyer and seller, while others provide a process for non-delivery or an item that materially differs from its description. Read the current terms for the exact seller, item, and payment route. Note the last date to request a return, ask the marketplace for help, or dispute a card payment. Do not assume that a policy described for one service applies to every order on a similarly named marketplace.
In the United States, the INFORM Consumers Act requires covered marketplaces to verify certain seller information and, for qualifying high-volume sellers meeting a separate revenue threshold, disclose specified details and provide a way to report suspicious activity. The FTC explains the law and its scope at INFORM Consumers Act. It took effect June 27, 2023, but it does not certify an individual game’s authenticity or condition, and it does not mean every seller must display a street address.

What should you ask before buying?
Keep questions specific to the item and get the response in writing on the marketplace. For example:

- “Are these photos of the exact game I will receive?”
- “What condition is the disc or cartridge in, and has it been tested?”
- “Are the case, cover, manual, and other pictured parts included?”
- “Which edition or region/version is this?”
- “What is your return policy if the item is incomplete or materially different from the description?”
A seller’s reply can clarify the offer, but it is not a guarantee that the item is authentic or working. Preserve the message so you can compare it with what arrives.

How should you pay?
Use the marketplace checkout and a payment method it supports. The FTC warns: “Don’t buy from anyone who wants you to pay outside the marketplace’s payment system.” Moving payment elsewhere can cost you marketplace recourse. A credit card or a secure payment service with buyer protection may provide additional options if something goes wrong. Do not comply with a seller’s demand for a wire transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency.
Before submitting payment, save the listing and its terms, item photos, seller messages, shipping cost, and order confirmation. Keep copies somewhere you can access if the listing changes or disappears.

What should you do when the game arrives—or does not?
If it arrives
- Compare the game and included parts with the saved listing and the seller’s written answers.
- If something is missing, damaged, defective, or materially different, photograph the item and discrepancy.
- Contact the seller promptly through the marketplace and keep the conversation on-platform.
- If the seller does not resolve the issue, use the marketplace’s claim or return process. If you paid by card, contact the card issuer as appropriate; check its deadline rather than waiting past it for a seller response.
If it never arrives
- Check the order’s tracking and estimated delivery information.
- Contact the seller through the marketplace and retain the message.
- If the item remains undelivered, report it through the marketplace’s non-delivery process before its stated deadline. If you paid by card, check the issuer’s dispute process and deadline as well.

There is no single deadline for all marketplaces or payment methods. The period depends on the applicable policy and transaction, so check it before buying and again as soon as a problem appears. For example, Amazon Pay’s A-to-z Guarantee page describes coverage for eligible qualifying third-party transactions, including certain non-delivery and condition or description problems. It also lists exclusions, waiting periods, and claim windows; for a received item that is damaged, defective, or materially different, it says to contact the seller within 14 days. That example is specific to eligible Amazon Pay transactions, not a blanket guarantee for every Amazon marketplace order or other service. Review the live policy for your purchase.

How should you compare two listings?
Compare the actual offers, not just the asking prices. A cheaper listing may cost more after shipping or leave you with less recourse.
